NJ’s native tribes understand the importance of telling their own story

The Ramapough Lenape continue to struggle for recognition at the federal level. Some of the difficulty lies in the fact that they have very little to no recorded history of their own. It is often told by outsiders, which makes it difficult for them to "prove" that they are, in fact, Native Americans. Now, Ramapo College professor Neriko Doerr is working with the tribe on being their own historians and telling their own story.

In 1978, no one heard of Ramapough “Indians”. In 1982, there were 375 Ramapough Mountain People. In 1985, they were Tuscarora. In1995, they were turned down by BIA for Federal Recognition as a tribe because they couldn’t show that they had any Native American Indian ancestry. Since that time, they have been turned down 2 more times on appeal. There is just NO proof anywhere that they have Native ancestors. However, they do have an ancestor that claimed he was a Delaware, so he could get treated better. He was a freed slave person. He joined the war against Teedyuscung, a Lenape Chief, my ancestor!!!

They have NO ancestry. As a matter of fact their ancestors said they were Delaware Indians so that they would be treated better. They joined the war at the time and fought Teedyuscung, King Of The Delaware’s, MY ancestor for our homelands!!

@@faithafterdark7801 So why did all of sudden did they go quiet after get their DNA done? Because none of them showed Native American ancestry. I could see a mistake in maybe one or two, maybe in five but all of them? DNA is used to find guilt or not guilty, so it can’t be put all the way down. When the DNA doesn’t go their way, doesn’t mean their faulty. After all Mann tell his members to use a company that could even tell which tribe they were, that particular company no longer exists. Not only that, they didn’t need a test, all they had to do is look at their history. Ramapough timeline is way off from actual timeline. Mann says his 5X grandfather was ‘chief mannis’ in 1724. This doesn’t hold water... my 5X grandfather existed late 1700’s. My kids 5X grandfather existed as a father in 1834. Mann is in the level of my kids. There is so many holes in their identity as Native. Lenape were out of the area by 1750. Mann’s ancestors will still being sold in 1810. Slave ships were still coming in... how can you not see how it doesn’t fit. We got here in Moraviantown in 1792 with about 100 people. Our members number almost 1500 today. So we left so many behind that they number over 5000 today.... when do these people wake up and smell the coffee? They claimed they were Delaware years ago just so they would be treated better and fought my ancestor, Teedyuscung, for our homelands. Did they also kill Teedyuscung? He died under questionable circumstances. I work on family trees, and I can connect our community to Anadarko, Bartlesville, Stockbridge-Munsee, Munsee-Delaware, Kansas, Six Nations but not to the eastern groups. Our history is well documented. So I was able to go back to the mid 1600’s. We have 2 researchers here and I asked one of them if they found a connection to the Easter groups that claim they are Lenape. No connection was found. So there are a number of researchers that I have talked to that agree with me... no connection whatsoever. No matter how many excuses they come up with

@@brittcurls I am just watching this series called Enslaved produced by Samuel Jackson. It is absolutely amazing. Some, a lot of people, brought their cultural traditions with them. It isn’t forgotten.... so I don’t understand why so many are involved with “cultural Appropriation” or “race shifting”
