NIU - Is this the Tesla of Electric Scooters? | 100% Independent, 100% Electric

Niu scooters are currently the best selling scooters in the world - and they are electric! Designed for an urban environment, this Niu GTS-Pro is not built for high speeds or long ranges, but it has enough of both to make it the perfect electric solution for commuting and last mile deliveries. It has two batteries, both of which can be removed to be charged anywhere making charging easy but not the fastest. It comes with an app and some cool tech which allows users to see how the scooter performs as well as locate it and turn it on remotely.
It might not be the fastest two-wheeled electric vehicle, or have the biggest range, but it's comfortable, enjoyable to ride, nippy and lets face it, it looks pretty cool!

These go too fast for being classified as a moped/scooter since they go up to 43 mph or 70 km/h, and a moped/scooter can't go legally faster then 28 mph or 45 km/h, so you probably need one of the motorcycle licenses, and if you have a motor license that is great, but why would you limit yourself to 43 mph or 70 km/h? Probably not safe to go on the Motorway if all the other traffic goes at a minimum 20 mph or 30 km/h faster then you can go, on highways in the Netherlands the max speed limit is 100, 120 or 130 km/h, i don't know if in the UK there are roads where you can go faster than 60 mph though, but that would mean in the Netherlands other traffic can go 30 to 60 km/h faster than you. (including lorries, and they will try to overtake you, they already do when another lorry is going 100km/h) - So you probably need a motor license to operate these. - Probably not safe to go on the 60mph+ roads with other traffic being much faster. - Not allowed to go on bicycle paths (speed difference between bicyclist and this is too large) Why not get an Electric motorcycle that can atleast safely maintain motorway/highway speeds? at a minimum of 60 mph or 100 km/h, you might not be the fastest road user but on roads lower than those speeds you can atleast keep up with the other traffic and not be a nuisance like the hated cyclists that has to share the road with the car driver. Or if it is solely for city driving, why not get an Electric moped/scooter that can't go legally faster then 28 mph or 45 km/h? So it falls under the AM license. (more people probably have an AM license than an A, A2 or A1 motorcycle license) for some positivity, i like the design and removable batteries.

Well done story. But he should have mentioned the Niu GTS-Pro, is just one of many electric two wheelers that NIU produces, to address the naysayers issues with this model. And I did not hear anything directly said about ride SHAREing, other than some of its security features which has fueled its growth. Just hope the company hints come true and it willl be built and sold in the USA too at some-point.

I am a NIU owner since more than one year and I am very happy with the vehicle. I already did 6000 km with it (about 3728 miles). A couple of corrections: - The turning signal sound it's indeed cringy but you can change it. There are 7 different sounds you can choose from already installed in the vehicle - The electric motor is not inside the body of the scooter, as the gentleman implies. Its inside the wheel of the vehicle, in the rear. Important detail, since this means that the scooter even lacks a transmission belt: one less piece that needs maintenance or needs to be changed eventually! Thanks for this video!

You should also mention that it costs about half of its European/Italian rivals. And it is about the price of a good e-bike. Also, App, battery technology and the charger are excellent. I love it!! One more thing: acceleration from 0 to 30kph is instant which makes it very safe at traffic lights.

TBH, the electric bikes in China have had removable batteries for many many years. They pull them out and take them into the flat/office to charge. You can even plug them in at various places along the roads...many places have chargers specifically for this and charge for the privilege, of course....often they're (push)bike places, and offer other bike services like repair/etc.

Great episode! You really feel the practical intent behind this vehicle. I think you should mention it's name more often. If this is something you recommend. Say it's name, give it that oldest trick in the book, brand recognition.

Had the NIU N series for a couple of years and it’s great. Fun to ride and perfect for commuting to the station in the morning. Bit of rust coming through on the rear arms but other than that it’s great. (Also cheaper than most e-bikes)

The mode drop is at 15% already. The regeneration is only at breaking, you'll see it in the display. The indicater sound can be toggled between different sounds. Use this with one battery will max to dynamic mode, only 45kmh available. If battery's are 15% away from another then also max dynamic mode!

I was really toying with buying one of these, but it just isn’t fast enough for National speed limit single carriageway roads (60mph). I live in rural North Yorkshire with a 26 mile round-trip commute. If there was a 125cc equivalent electric bike that could manage to cruise at 60mph with ease at this sort of price point, then we’ll have cracked it 👍🏻

  • @crankcase75

    @crankcase75

I believe there is a 125cc equivalent from Niu - the top speed of these things is mostly down to controller software and mostly there to comply with moped regulations in countries where that matters - e.g. some countries let you ride 50cc on a car license, but 125 requires a proper bike license.

Yes, more powerful motor(s) may also allow for better regen too, letting the disc breaks take it easy. An all-wheel-drive version (ie: dual motors) could be an option if it's difficult to fit a single bigger hub motor.

Horwin CR6 is an electric motorcycle with a range of around 75mph and a top speed of just under 60mph. 125 equivalent, so can be ridden on a CBT. The Horwin EK3 electric scooter will be available shortly and has a top speed of around 60mph I believe. The NIU NQi GTS models are limited to 45mph. They are very nice scooters though!

Fascinating! As a scooter driver, and a car and motorhome driver, I was particularly keen to see how it performs. It would be/could be ideal as a little run-around when you park up your motorhome. However, the location of the filming intrigued me more that it should have! Quite hilly, coastal, twee .... North Devon? Coastal North York Moors? South Wales? Spotting the Kewstoke sign was a delight! Success

Thanks for the review. Yes, it's about what you need. What I need is the equivalent of a Suzuki Burgman 200 in terms of carrying a passenger at 100 KPH up to 250 kilometres / day. Once something that fits that bill is on the market in Japan, and at the same or better engineering than Honda, I am switching with no hesitance, ALMOST regardless of the cost.

I have an Emmo GT80. . . I’ll say that Cruise Control is vital. When my Lead Acid batteries gjve up the ghost, I’ll convert to lithium ion, for more range. It tops out at 47 km/h, which is plenty, especially considering that I don’t have to licence or insure it, as it’s considered an electric bicycle. I’ve enjoyed it during the snow-free months. . . late March to late November

Nice Video Andy. Love the term Urban Commuting Vehicle so now I can hang with the posh(poser) Guys with fancy crossover with their acronyms,😆 Im looking at getting something like this maybe not this one, but I was surprised there is a NIU dealer in Los Angeles. I'm kind of looking at those hipper models of small EV motorcycles-scooters Although this NIU does have some nice feature like being able to take one battery out and use the storage good for those essential runs to the market, coffee sho and take away. my Gas powered motorcycle is going away this coming Tuesday so I will looking at getting another two wheeler this time an E-Motorcycle. In the future I see my ICE car going away too, hopefully my area gets a EV car sharing service soon.

Both my wife and I have an e-scooter. Even with the yearly battery change (lead acid) and insurance they workout cheaper than using the bus here in Trujillo Peru. Our batteries would last longer if the local government decided to install charging in the city centre car park. But for the moment they prefer giving planing permission to new gas stations, so we end up cycling our batteries very quickly. CAR PARK AND RESTAURANT CHARGING ARE A MUST. That extra hour of charge makes a world of difference.
