Sacred words : Nissan they didn't let the Z Die. They have released a 400 Hp RWd 6 speed , sport car into the current car climate. In this Era where everyone and their grandma is producing boring Evs and fighting for the top most boring 0-60. This is a bold move from Nissan. We still want enthusiast cars. Awesome video.

I wish more car companies were like Toyota, Nissan (maybe Honda too?) They are making cars for everyone and are considerate of the target group of the products they create. Toyota even works on creating an alternative fuel to gasoline just so gas powered cars can stay longer

I also have a GR86 and completely agree with what you said. I've had 2 previous sports cars, both with 300+ hp. Yet, I've never owned a vehicle that I find myself literally giggling with how much fun I'm having tossing it into a corner, dropping a gear and then reving it to red line, as I do with the GR.

Agreed. I have the first gen BRZ, and it's that go-cart road feel situation I enjoy most about the vehicle. Looking forward some day to test driving the new Z (if it ever arrives for the average customer), but I wonder if Z will have that same road feel, or be more of a straight line pedal mashing vehicle.

I think they fell flat in designing the front end, but I like the side and rear profiles. and the interior. None of the things I like sway me in the Z's favor though. The front end just doesn't cut it for me when the entirety of the 86 looks so good to me. Had the Z come in a little cheaper for the base model, it may have been an option, but I don't want to pay more than 30-mid 30s brand new, and generally I prefer to buy used. The upcoming Civic Type R is actually more appealing to me right now than the Z, but I'm a Honda person. First car was/still is a Civic. Edit: I am also still happy they made the new Z, don't get me wrong. Just not for me.

@@jeppyjep I really like the inspiration from the previous Z cars, as well. The roofline having always been the shape it is is one thing, but my favorite design detail is the 300ZX-esque taillights. If money wasn't a factor, I would buy and build a 300ZX, no doubt about it. The front end of the new Z definitely has the former Datsun 2xx feel, but I think the headlights could've been placed further down the hood line or front end (if that makes sense), and the hood and front grille shape itself could be a little different. The design this guy made is what I would've loved to see! I'm not going to be able to afford a Nismo model, but I'm looking forward to seeing one. Additionally, I think that because Nissan was constrained to using the 370Z chassis, they had to keep the relative proportions present on the 370, so that may have been part of the reason the front end looks kind of blunt, bulky to me. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIWoucZme9e8ldI.html

Great review. I was really interested in buying the new Z. The blue or rosewood colors look great. But I came here to say that I’ve decided to keep my 370Z Nismo (2010 with 50K miles). It’s stock except for adding Stillen Gen3 long intakes and an oil cooler from Z1. The Nissan dealer wanted to buy it from me even before the new Z was available in the trim I wanted. I’ve thought long and hard about it, and basically yes, I get a newer turbo engine and updated electronics… but I can’t justify the difference in price Nissan is asking. Probably 60K+ for a Nismo version and the options I would want. That’s double what the 370Z Nismo has cost me. If you want a fast American muscle car, theres the Mustang GT350. A driver’s car could be the (BMW Z4 cough cough) Supra. It’s a crowded market and I’m starting to feel like the Z won’t complete long term. It’s kinda the end of an era for these types of cars. That just might be a good reason to own one. ❤

The z cars have always had lighter rivals. The z31 had the first gen mr2 and the rear wheel drive Corollas, The z32 had the rx7s, z33 had the s2000 and rx8, I’m sure there’s tons more examples. I feel like Z cars have always been softer more powerful GT car versions of sports cars. I understand the juxtaposition here with the 86 really driving home the point that the gr86 feels so balanced and light. I swear every video in the early 2000s said the same thing about the 350 when comparing it to the s2k. And it’s true the s2k and gr86 are incredible well balanced fun drivers cars and they feel lighter and stiffer. I appreciate you guys for going with this comparison rather than another Supra/mustang video. I’m a die hard z fan so some of the video was sad to hear but I’m glad it’s getting a fair review. Hopefully the dealer markups go away so more people buy both cars, and in the case of the Z car, so we can get a new gen sorting out those problems much sooner than this one took to get here. I remember being interested in the 350Z as I saw them out the window of my middle school bus... Then slowly losing interest with the very similar 370, then high school came and went... Then college... Then years of work, and now finally there's an update! Shame it's still partially the previous ones underneath. My issue with the BRZ/86 which I loved and sold for a 370Z was the power it’s not nearly enough the handling feel is amazing the car drives like a Porsche but has no power like one. The few 911s I’ve driven have been a completely different driving feel. The 370Z is my favorite sports car for the average person they are cheap enough and highly modifiable. Mine I bought stock but it surely isn’t anymore, It’s fast fun and handles great overall.

Great comparison review. My thoughts, first I own a Neptune Blue GR86 and my first car was a 1979 280zx. So the new Z should have been the car I purchased since it was the first car I owned. However beside the looks that bring back the nostalgia it didn’t drive like my old Z. The new Z is heavy and more of a GT car than anything. As for the GR86 I love almost everything about it. The RTV is a serious issue and I recommend you take it to Toyota have the oil pan dropped and remove the RTV from the oil pickup tube as I did. Mine was completely blocked up.

@@future62 My Z weighed 2,800lbs so not heavy at all actually. Vs the modern Z weighs 700lbs more than my GR86. As for the X in the Z that was for the 2+2 configuration. I had a 1976 280Z and a 1979 280ZX. Both cars handled amazing and that is what I wanted out of this new Z. Unfortunately the new Z weighs almost 3,600lbs, the suspension is tuned for GT duties, and the brakes hate stopping the damn thing. Now the new Z looks the part and has some really good power. My GR86 on the other hand weighs 2,860lbs, handles great, and brakes on a dime. Which reminds me of my Z of old and that is why it's in my garage.

Totally agree on the weight differences, and GT vs sports car thing. Just have to point out the ZX wasn't a 2+2 designation. The 260Z and the 280Z both came in 2+2 seating, in addition to 2-seats. The 240/260/280 models were all the S30 chassis. The 280ZX was the S130 chassis which also came in both 2-seat and 2+2 configurations, just like both the Z31 & Z32 chassis 300ZX's. Love watching the honest reviews and perspectives on this channel! One thing I think is important to keep in mind with the new Z is that the original Datsun 240Z was made as sort of Japan's answer to American muscle - a Japanese sports car for the American market. While it should and does get compared to other Japanese sports cars like the GR86 and Supra, I feel like the Z lineup has always walked the fine line between Japanese and American car culture in terms of both looks and performance, and Nissan continues that tradition with this new Z.

Zs have long been a great middle ground between the lightweight 4-cylinder sports cars and the big V8 muscle cars. To expect the new Z to become more like the GR86 I think misunderstands the Z a little bit - though I'm sure many will cross-shop the two cars and highlighting their differences is fair in that light. The new Z is definitely soft but you might be surprised how neutral and playful the Performance model is at the limit on track. It's more like a Miata in the sense that there's both a lot of body roll and a lot of fun.

Love this channel. I am so jealous of the roads you have in your area As a former long time Nissan / Infiniti enthusiast, I just feel like the new Z isn’t progressive enough. It’s a great looking car, and I’m not going to say it’s a “bad” car. I think many enthusiasts wanted to wait to see how Nissan would execute development, but I see lethargic engineering that didn’t keep pace with the growth of its fanbase. Perhaps they will attract either new enthusiasts or diehard loyalists to the new Z.

I agree with your points. But to add, I think they were aiming for a reasonable price point for what they were churning out. I suspect if they added the latest engineering to the entire vehicle, to include chassis/suspension/etc, then we'd be looking at M2 CS MSRPs, without similar performance to justify it. Or they could collaborate with another manufacturer at the risk of losing their purity in heritage, but save money like Toyota did with the Supra. Not going to lie, after drooling at the 370Z Nismo for so long without committing to buying it, seeing a warrantied twin turbo version with an updated interior and exterior feels like more of a justified purchase. I'm very curious what the Z Nismo will MSRP at.

When i give them some throttle they are GONE and im already speeding hard and have to slow down, which is great and fun for those few seconds BUT at the same time, a slow car trying to get those speeds when it takes double the time isn't that fun. I have driven the Miata and this GR86, they are dog slow compared to my 2 cars or even the Nissan Z and when you are used to a car taking off that fast, a much slower car is boring. I personally cant deal with a slow car, when i hit the gas pedal, i expect it to move and move fast.

Great review - revealed a lot of suspicions I had about the new Z. I'm glad it exists for those who want one, but I'm done with heavy cars, regardless of hp. A lighter, more tactile car is much more appealing to me nowadays. I bought a 2016 Cayman S 6-speed this year and wish I could have got into one sooner. It was hard to find a clean, low mileage car with low options, but I managed to get everything I wanted except the Carrera S wheels, which is easily remedied. As a former 300ZX, 350Z, and 370Z the new Z is very dissapointing. It's quicker in a straight line but handles and brakes terribly. The added weight makes everything feel worse. It feels rushed even though Nissan had 13 years to make it... Then there is the price tag which at $50k for a proper LSD equipped model is no longer affordable which Z cars always were. I find the GR86 far more impressive given the affordable price and what you get. I will say I personally wouldn't speak to the reliability of any car after only driving it for 10k miles. 10k miles is barely broken in or for some cars there first oil change.

More GT than Sports car, and too much engine relative to suspension, chassis and brakes. The GR86/BRZ duo make a more compelling case for something that is just more fun to drive. One question I have is do you think the Supra manages the increased power with an equivalent amount of fun, albeit one that costs 20K more? I was wondering if the Supra has the purer driving dynamics they loved in the GR86 but with the increased power of the Z. The Supra is about 150 pounds lighter than the Z, and from everything I have read, has better chassis control, stronger brakes, better steering feel, and if you go with the automatic, a much better transmission. I drove a 2021 Supra just the other day, and it felt good. Don't think it had adjustable suspension, so it was quite stiff (more so than my STi which is my daily), and I'm leaning strongly towards that or the new M2 as my next car.

@@DylanTK Thanks Dylan....I have seen that video. I think it was interesting to note that Mark felt the Z was a bit more organic in terms of how the front and rear suspension communicate. I had heard that the Supra was a bit more edgy with a greater likelihood to oversteer, but I thought Toyota had smoothed some of that out in the newer iterations. Speaking of steering feedback, I drove a 718 Cayman today...base model, manual but on 20" wheels. Steering is very precise, but the road feel is non-existent. I got back into my STi for the a long drive home from the dealership and was stuck by how alive the car feels in comparison. Who would've thunk it. I think the STi is actually more fun to drive at commuting speeds, and while no doubt the Cayman is faster on a track, it just feels boring at anything less than 8/10s. And you'd be hard pressed to tell the exhaust notes apart!

  • @DylanTK

@@stevegrauer, yeah it's not even really the oversteer in the Supra that's weird as much as the way the car feels kinda like it floats under dynamic suspension loads and as if you're sitting on top of it versus say any other car. It's weird to describe, but I honestly would prefer if it didn't feel that way lol. As said, however, it still moves and will lay down the law on track even in that despite those items. As for your STI, might be because hydraulic steering rack? Most EPS units just don't have the same type of feel, but the 86 system is pretty solid if you ever get to try it (1st or 2nd gen).

Thanks for the interesting review - great info. For me these vehicles (especially the dragged out Z launch), are becoming like a big tease. What good are any of these vehicles, if the average customer is basically unable to get hands on one? I bet in the USA, even a year from now the Z will be in relatively limited supply, aggravating to get with dealers still trying for ADMs. :(

Paul, you're the only one that's said it. This car looks 5 - 8 years old already. I too think it looks great, but it's living a parallel life to the previous Zs. Again, not a bad thing; in fact it's refreshing some cars aren't taking such massive leaps and bounds into the future. It's like the game Cyberpunk. The game takes place in a future world, but it's the same game we've all played since Bethesda's Skyrim, which shares a lot of parts with Oblivion.

Twin Turbos, Heritage, New retro design etc. However after watching numerous review videos including this one I must say I am turned off by the Z. I'd rather have the manual Supra now. I feel as though Nissan fell very short with this car and they didn't have to, they basically just made a car to make a car, not because of their enthusiasm for sportscars but because their competition made new ones.

Disagree. Especially since neither of these cars are for the average guy. Though you'll undoubtedly get some buyers of each who just wanted something that "looked cool", both are really for the enthusiast who have certain things they value in a driving experience. Average people will the the GR86 too slow, and they'll think the Z is too fast for its own good since they won't know how to handle it through the corners. For those with a particular interest in car control in spirited driving, multiple reviews, including this one, suggest the Z may leave you wanting.

In a way, the Z remains, what the Fairlady has always been. Tamura-san would describe Z’s as dance partners, but of course he has unorthodox perceptions about how sports cars should approach dynamics, but ever since the Z31 the Z was essentially a Japanese Muscle Car. Something meant to tackle the American highway system with enjoyment. There’s never been a V8 Z, tho I bet if Nissan figured out a way to keep it relatively cheap for the era (which like it or not 40K starting IS relatively cheap for today) they would have made a V8 Z with the VK series engine (funny thing about VK’s, they sound just like VQs lol). A lot of what y’all are saying about the Z was said about the Z31, Z32, 350Z and 370Z. This has been how they liked to do Z’s, where the Silvia would have been how they’d like to do sport car carvers. Fairlady Z is more muscle car than Pony car

You can't compare a peregrine falcon and a sailfish. One dominates the skies, the other dominates the ocean. I love both cars. Pick the one that fits your environment and you'll be more than happy with your purchase. :). *Initial D/Wangan Midnight*
