Nisi Athena Cinema Lenses - I might have a New Favorite Lens!

Nisi Athena Cinema Lenses - I might have a New Favorite Lens! #sonyfx3 #sonyfx6
Stress testing the new Nisi Athena Cinema Lenses, this lens set is quite special and I'm really curious what you think about it.
I tested it on Sony Fx6 and Sony Fx3 and I was quite impressed with the look.
Although I did a short side by side with DZO Vespid 35 mm, I want to do a more in-depth side by side with the other focal lengths as well.
To grade this video I used my Luts: alexandru-don.sellfy.store

I think the skin tones look better in the DZO, the Nisi kinda like mushy compared to DZO. I like the fast aperture though

Most definitely the best bang for your buck cinema lenses out there !! 🔥 I almost skipped out on these for anamorphic lenses and I m glad I didn’t

It’s the micro contrast in the lenses that give it that next level look

I got an in-store demo of the NiSi lenses a couple of weeks ago and ordered the set immediately. I can almost always find a gripe when testing new equipment, but keeping in mind the low price and compact size, I was blown away even with brief tests in the camera store. The only problem was having to wait for the next shipment to arrive in the US. Hopefully I will have them to work with in a few days.

Every KZread review of the Athena's shows great separation on the lens, these look to be the best lower budget set to have.

These look fantastic, great job Alex. Beautiful night shots. I've only watched on a mobile phone, but to my eyes the highlight rolloff on skin tones looks a bit better on the Vespid. Love the PD MOVIE Lidar, but getting used to that 4-5m mark and switching to manual when needed takes some practice. Also when in manual mode, you can't stay at closest focus for long or it switches back to auto. I kinda wish it had a hard switch to go completely to manual mode when needed.

Thanks a lot, regarding vested, they seem softer on the rolloff because they are softer in general, which is ok if you have a 6k or 8k camera, but on Sony Fx6 and Fx3 I mostly shoot 4k 100fps which even tho it looks good at the first glance, it's softer than normal 4k and so when I use the Vespid at 4k 100fps they tend to look to soft for my personal preference. Regarding the Pdmovie lidar focus, I can't believe are share the same frustration :)) It drives me nuts when It switches back to auto when I need it to be in manual

@@AlexDon that makes good sense re softness. We'll have to lobby Pdmovie to add something in firmware, if that's at all possible. I've now got used to only staying at closest focus for 1-2 seconds, then pulling back to avoid the frustrating switch 😅

@@AlexDon I just got a useful reply from Pdmovie about this: leave one of the 5 lens slots uncalibrated, and use that slot when you need manual-only focus. Seems a good idea ;-)

@@AlexDonthat’s crazy! I was looking into getting the PD Movie Lidar myself. But I am on the fence as DJI is a bigger investment and ecosystem to function. I see a lot of good feedback from the live air smart but some mixed reviews as well, would you confidently recommend it for use so long as you stay within the 4 metre limitation? Does that outweigh the set up and inconvenience of having to use the gimbal or DJI transmitter in order for the 4d to function?

Nice review! I'm looking into these lenses and have a couple questions: - How would you say the image quality of these lenses compares to Sony GM prime lenses? (saw some video's where you used a sony 50mm 1.2 GM for example) - Would you say these lenses can be used as a solo operator with their 300 degree focus throw? (Without a lidar system) - Do you ever use adapters with rear filtration on camera's like the FX3? Because of the extending back element it can't be used with such filters right? For context. I'm looking into getting a Sony FX6 for documentary and commercial video production. Mainly solo operating at first. I already have some of the g-master primes, which I currently use on the A7IV for photography. I like the idea of having a lens set with a more versatile mount like PL and video focused features, like having almost no focus breathing, tactile manual focus and same size and weight. But I'm not sure the differentiation on those specs alone would justify the purchase of an extra lens set like the Nisi Athena's. Especially when some other reviewers I've seen mention the slightly inconsistent performance on the 25 and 35mm. Would love to hear your thoughts on image quality and workflow!

I personally use everyday and on my payed jobs the G masters lenses, I have almost the full set and I honestly love it. The autofocus and performance is miles away from other lenses I've tested so far. Of course they are not as creative as other cinema lenses but I can alway add a creative filters or do some post production magic to create some distortion. As a solo creator myself I would not recommend the Athena especially paired with Fx6 when you have so many g master options. Of course the Lidar is game changing but I still prefer the comfort of g master autofocus. I might have gotten lazy but nothing compares to being stress free on set knowing all your shots are always in focus.

@@AlexDon thanks for the reply! Great to have someone with this setup share his real world experience. You confirmed my thoughts about the GM lenses being the more practical choice for most situations. I have some Contax Zeiss lenses as well. Maybe I'll try to convert those with some focus gears and same size filter threads for those times when I want something more of a "look". When I need autofocus and a more clinical image the GM lenses seem the better option. Thanks for chiming in! 🙂
