80's hair bands had a 10 year reign on the charts, it was time for something new. At this point rock was on it's way out anyway, with rap starting to take over the charts. I do not even think grunge lasted as long as disco. People can only take so much of self loathing and being depressed and miserable all the time.

I still get chills when I hear " With the lights out". Such a powerful song. I was a teenager in the 70's and had given up on Rock music by the mid 80's (hair-metal was not my thing). This woke me right up. I love how the solo is just the melody of the song. Went out and got the album as soon as I found out who it was. I was in my early/mid 30's. My wife couldn't stand them! The marriage didn't last, but my love for Nirvana has...

One thing I loved about Kurt was his use of sarcasm. 90s was definitely the decade of sarcasm lol.

@@Hexon66 It was never called hair rock or hair bands at the time. That was a name given around a decade later. I know, because I’m from that time. That’s why I purposely avoided calling it that. If you want to know how it was to live in that time, I give you more details. I was there at the Sunset Strip and in the San Fernando Valley. I lived it!

Kurt often mocked the industry. He proved his point with this song.

" I took it as mocking the industry be he always did like when he wore the dress over his clothes to the award show and bc I read this To his eternal credit, Cobain saw the influence his music was having on mainstream culture and tried to stem the spread. @@kristinewhitfield4110 well, he created a masterpiece with that one, as a hip hop head it caught my ears and I can understand his desire to take it back after he saw the affect that it had on his audience but hey, too late, the genie is out of the bottle.

This song changed the music industry and popular culture.

The phrase "smells like teen spirit" had been scrawled on the wall of his apartment by Katherine Hanna, the lead singer of the band Bikini Kill. Hanna wrote this as a joke because her bandmate Tobi Vail, who happened to be Cobain's girlfriend at the time, was a fan of the Teen Spirit deodorant.

I was 18 & it changed my life. Hair rock died & this spoke. It was more real then parties & girls.

I always perceived the line "With the lights out, its less dangerous" - as being about anonymity, the self-permission to act without fear of repercussion

I actually seen the first time they played this on MTV on accident late one night after coming home from the club next day I was telling everyone you got to hear this band Nirvana

They changed rock. Their sound was so groundbreaking.

When you are Biracial and you ask your mum what a Mulatto is (an old fashioned term to describe Biracial people) means I can relate to this song on a more personal level. It was the ultimate feel reckless, feel sexy/feel ugly, feel invincible, feel invisible, opposite - opposite - opposite confusion of teenager-hood.

This song came out in 1992 and it changed my generation. Generation X got their voice heard and it gave us hope.

My husband was in a metal band at the time, just got done laying tracks, soon as they heard nirvana, metal was dead , grunge just took over .

Was in HS when this came out! Man ...feel old. lol Rap, grunge, punk, alt rock was blowing up in the early '90s. Kinda killed off the corny '80s hair bands. Most of us (GenX) were coming of age.

It feels like this song is about young angst and pain. Teens feeling awkward and misunderstood- like untouchables. It’s how I felt in my family.

I've always liked this song since the first time i heard it. The former drummer for nirvana went on to form and be the front man for the foo fighters check them outif you haven't and jay z quoted some of the lyrics from smells like teen spirit in one of his songs. he said that when he heard it he knew it was big and would change the course of music for awhile and that it stopped the rise of hip hop for awhile. R.I.P kurt cobain🙏

OH HELL YES....He kicked the door open for grunge and brought Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and SoundGarden with him......this is the ones who CHANGED IT ALL into the grunge scene...I remember it like yesterday....this song and NIRVANA took over ...overnight!!!! He spoke for generation X better than anyone did.

Hypnotic is the perfect word to describe Kurt Cobain & Nirvana. I was in HS when this came out & we were all OBSESSED. Lotta flannel, clogs, those yellowy workboots (Timbs), cut-offs or ripped grungy/just slept in them looking jeans. And Kurt’s hypnotic voice over all of it. RIP

Billy Corgan from the smashing pumpkins said it best. Kurt Cobain was an assassin with his music. He wrote songs that are timeless. They spoke to a generation and beyond.

They were incredible live, especially when playing this live!! Kurt’s whole body went rigid with tension/power........he put his all into the music

This came out my freshman year... the 90's were so much fun!

Kurt's nickname was mosquito, and the albino, etc. are friends in a group from childhood.

At 15 we used to live in an apartment. When my parents went to bed, I used to jump out the balcony, go to the club until it closed at 3 am, then climb back up and into my room, back to bed and be up for breakfast with the family like nothing happened.

Pleeez do Lithium...lyric version of teen spirit was a great call.....guys when this song broke.....was nothing good but GnR and Metallica...the rest was 80s hair bands....this song alone put em all out of work except for the two I just mentioned ...FACTS, and you can see how it and their style just came from left field out of nowhere compared to what was hot at the time

Minus Bon Jovi......they somehow managed to stick it out and were still releasing fairly mainstream music throughout the 90s and 00s. The rest though....even Motley Crue completely fell off the radar for the most part.

@@SIXX2772 Yeah only the huge rock bands like Queen, GNR, Metallica and U2 survived the whole Grunge/Alternative breakthrough really, along with legacy bands like the Stones and the Who etc. All the other big artists of the 80s faded away and just relied on their previous popularity to sustain them through gigs etc.

Another great reaction video to an all time great tune and video. BJ really got it!! Loved Asia's interpretation too. Excellent job with this tune!!

I was in foster care as a teenager, so there are tooooo many "Bad Kid" stories. lol

I'm not saying teenagers are stupid, absolutely not, but these lyrics could easily just be random thoughts from one of those 🤣 And I think that is exactly what Kurt went for.

I'll say it, there's a reason there's a saying young and stupid. We all were young and stupid once. Just meaning that teens haven't had alot of life experience yet, not that they're not intelligent. And that is some of the most tumultuous, emotional, fun, expressive times of our lives, especially w music. Another great song!
