clearly there were no lyrics yet and he was still writing the vocal melody. I do the same thing when I'm trying to write vocals, a lot of musicians do.
One of my favourite Nirvana songs.

PrPwnage - whats interesting about Paper Cuts is that I dont think they barely ever played it live which is sad. I also believe Alive in Chains used that song as kind of a basis for their sound. No doubt Kurt made that song before alice was making music - its scary how good he was to write that song and then never use the sound again
