In case you don't know, when he says "All these songs are off their second record" in the beginning of the video, he's talking about the Meat Puppets. A handful of the songs that they play on this Unplugged session are Meat Puppets songs, and Chris and Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets are sitting in with them here. That's Curt Kirkwood on guitar.

One thing that shocked me completely was when I was at my guitar store I saw something insane. They have drumheads signed by famous musicians and bands who come through the store, and ours has one signed by the Meat Puppets, and that’s who Nirvana is playing with here. Their songs on their performance which was Lake of Fire, Plateau and Oh Me were absolutely fantastic, and seeing that they’ve been there was such an amazing feeling.

So, one thing the Nirvana tried to do with their unplugged show was to showcase music they liked themselves and not just play their own stuff. They played only like 2-3 of their own songs, and only did lesser known ones of those. At one point in the show, Kurt invited out the band "The Meatpuppets" and played a few of their songs. This was one of those. They also did an obscure David Bowie song, one from the punk band The Vaselines, one from blues singer Leadbelly. It's such a great performance.

Think it was more like about 8 nirvana tracks out of the cds 14. Come As You Are was probably the only real big hit that they performed, that and maybe About a girl. Girl came from Bleach, the album before Nevermind. Come As You Are, Something in the way, Polly, and On a plain from nevermind. Pennyroyal tea, dumb and all apologies from the then recent album In utero. The rest were covers

I looked up the Meat Puppets original version of this song (as well as the other two Nirvana played during this performance) and Not only did Kurt respectfully pay homage to the original, he blew it away by ten fold. All the grainy, screechiness is how the Meat Puppets performed the song and he absolutely nailed it.

Oh, wow.. blew it away by ten fold.. that sounds like a fan boy/girl opinion hahaha. They are very nice versions and he sings them Really well but the trippy, psychedelic, unique and totally original sound are lost. Not a bad thing but it’s also half of the meat puppets/half nirvana playing on the unplugged versions so really Kurt’s on contribution is the vocals, which are amazing, no doubt. But acting like it just buries the originals is silly, but if you’re into more radio friendly, polished style music I can see how’d it would be preferable

I wish this whole album would have been Nirvana and The Meat Puppets! This was beautifully haunting! Man Kurt was a genius!!! RIP ❤️ Also so cool how Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets was using a Quarter as a pick in this song.

His choice to cover such obscure songs instead of every single hit makes this performance hit so much harder.

It’s shows Kurt’s selflessness that he allowed n obscure band to perform three of their songs (on an album released in 1984!) and clapped in appreciation of the Meat Puppets. That really shows a lot of his character, that he would gracious enough to share the spotlight.

@Christopher Bingham It would not have been as memorable if Nirvana had just spit out the hits. An acoustic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” wouldn’t have worked, and Kurt’s choice of covers shows his music influences in a way a rote performance of Nirvana’s hits wouldn’t have done. I know MTV was not happy with Kurt’s creative choices (and not doing an encore after “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?”), but it’s why we still talk about this performance 20+ years later.

@@ashleybrown4754 Kurt was in bad physical shape, but his salvation was music and his talent was being able to convey his emotions so eloquently to others. It adds another layer to how remarkable and transcendent Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged is after all these years.
