This game achieved the rare thing of making you really feel like you are fighting a friend rather than a villain.

Nioh 2 is a story about inherited hate and ambition. The hate that started with Otakemaru, carried on through Yokai for many years. And that hate became so strong it took form as a spirit that possessed and destroyed many people. It took advantage of their dreams and ambitions and turned them to darkness. Tokichiro just wanted to be taken seriously and respected. He wanted to achieve his dream. The hardships of that road turned him to hatred and Otakemaru's influence took him over. How does that star wars thing go? Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hatred. Hatred leads to despair.

My sister and I were not expecting the emotional rollercoaster this game gave us. The personal journey between Hide and Tokichiro is some of the best I've seen.

Honestly, this song is amazing. I also like the little aspect of how if you yokai shift against him, he comments on it and ask why you're using that power against him.

I was not expecting to be so gripped by the story. This track made me tear up a bit while fighting him. When you think about how hideyoshi has been together for nearly 20 years at this point. And then tochikiro’s ambition takes over and destroys their wonderful friendship. It’s just heart wrenching when you sit back and really analyze it.

Tokichiro: "and what is it you want hm?" Protagonist: "I want my friend back."

"You're really leaving?.."

Friends make for the best antagonists. As you go through the story with them, you already know their motivation, their ambitions and their dreams. Two people walking the same path that now stand at a crossroad. It's a ''So it has to be this way'' moment. After the deed is done, there's no hate, they already understand one another. Although Tokichiro was already possessed by that point, it was still an amazing boss fight. He's a great character all the way through.

This was the hardest fight, he really meant for us to triumph with him, side by side even when he is possessed by the red eyed man

"Then all I got to offer you is death!" Tokichiro set has the buff called "Multitude of Hopes" which sounds like he is carrying the hopes of everyone in the land. Through the level a lot of samurai fight you stating things like "Lord Tokichiro is the only hope this land has left/ he is the only one who can guide us!" Which means despite his cruelty, people still see him for the great man he is. You cannot win a war by being nice. Legendary, a true Hideyoshi.

It's a same deal like with Nobunaga. When people from a wartorn country see a single man who has a will and power to stop wars, many would be inclined to follow him.

The best theme for Hideyoshi in any portrayal I've heard. Ambitious, truly majestic but also with a tragic undertone. Perfectly encapsulates what we know of him as a historical figure.

What made this fight even more tragic for me was that I used Dual Swords all the way through the game, and so it was painful to see my character and Tokichiro fight both with Dual Swords. Like Obi-Wan and Anakin going at it but without the safety of the memes.

I honestly had those vibes and never expected anyone else to XD

One of the things that I think made Nioh 2’s boss music so incredible was the voice acting and commentary from the bosses mod fight. Hitting the brute yokai-shift counter right as the song crescendos and hearing that furious shout with the rising strings is such an intense feeling. Especially with the game’s difficulty, it really feels like your character is fighting for their life, and is full of life (contrasting, say, the near-lifelessness or thematic fatigue in the Souls series). Love it.

This song brought out some heavy emotions. I went into this fight HATING him, but that sad song spoke volumes this storyline wasn't meant to be taken that way. Or so I see it.

I went in sad to the first fight. When he killed my Remilia, THEN I stormed Daigoji temple steaming. But the music there and the things he said when you destroy the crystals had me questioning shizz. Then after I beat Yokai Tokichiro I just felt like a colossal douche bag.

I think this song is so good at conveying the feeling that we're not only fighting a video game character called Tokichiro; that We're actually fighting , and we also are Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the second great unifier. We're living history itself. It feels so larger than life. The song feels half tragic and sad that it has come to this between Tokichiro and Hide, but also heroic and triumphant 4:11 as, despite the circumstances, this is closest Japan has been united in the last 100 years.

Finished the main game yesterday and I literally cried after beating him, thinking about the inevitable throughout the entire last level and the events that brought us to this. I hated him for what happens to Oichi but ultimately after he told his story I understood how tragic of a character he was. For me the story ends there, with my friend finally at ease. Fuck... I cry again xD

Literally a WAY better antagonist than that Kelley edgelord.

This OST hits really hard

This fight lowkey broke my heart a little and then at the end had a great payoff, i like how human the story is midst all its supernatural themes

The soundtrack alone is reason enough to buy this game in my opinion

Suddenly listening to this and got the urge to replay the game all over again.

Really love this track, and the Mujina soulcore against our old buddy works wonders :p

Amazing OST to fight your former friend with. Story is not what I look for in Nioh, but this was certainly a high point in the narrative.

At the same time that wouldn't make any sense considering our guy is an immortal yokai that can come back from death so wouldn't the damaged windpipe be healed?

​@@megasoniczxx I think the throat wound theory is the closest we will get to a canon explanation. The loud in-game grunts and screams are an inconsistency, but they're there for dramatic effect more than anything. It's possible that Hide CAN speak, but was simply never taught or trained how to, since they possibly lost their mother while they were still too young before growing up alone in the wilds. Then again, Hide can still read Tokichiro's letter in the beginning just fine, so if their mother had time to teach them that, but not actual speech, then I've no clue.

Omg this game! And the soundtrack!

The protagonist and tokichiro is like best friend to each other and they've been through alot of thing until this and when both of them fighting with each other this music suit perfectly lol

Tokichiro is the 1st boss I didn't even think about summoning friends or yokai shift (except burst counter). I felt like we need to finish this one on one only. And the theme completely got me in the vibe. First I expected the battle music to be ominous or evil. It turned out to be rather sad. It was so good. It was an honorable fight.

I Yokai shifted on him. I felt it’s what my character would’ve done. All who stand before him will fall, and he must make an example of would-be tyrants. But when the English VA for tochikirio proclaimed in a desperate or sad voice “you’re using that power on me?!” It just broke my heart and I regretted it. Neat little story that adds character to a playthrough.

I really wish i could have hugged him in the end, i feel like he deserved a little more love after being possessed for 80% of the game. Also more backstory, i know he had it tough since the start

I still think Nioh 1 has better story, characters, boss and character designs, level beauty, etc. but damn does Nioh 2 triumph in gameplay and music over Nioh 1 without a doubt. No competition there.

when i fought tokichiro i pretty use the same weapon setup: he use one katana i also use one katana. he use dual swords, i also used dual swords XD

When you and your best friend fight over the same girl

I've always felt that the story in Nioh assumes a level of innate knowledge about Japanese history that falls flat for audiences outside Japan. In Nioh 2, the biggest issue with the story is that Tokichiro goes from being your bestie to a mad dog that must be put down in like one mission, you're just totally blindsided by this plot twist that comes out of nowhere. That's probably because the game assumes you know the history of Toyotomi Hideyoshi already, so you know why and how he turned into a villain.

If you read the Character Directory and take into account the amount of time the story spans, you can reasonably fill in the gaps with next to no prior knowledge.

sadly enough, as good at it was, your character not speaking ruins the emotion because Toki's talking all emotional and your characters just does stupid faces in every emotional cutscene XD
