Genuinely sad if you stop doing the 1000km challenge. Already miss the Arctic Circle trips, so losing this other big part of your outstanding content will be a shame. You are one of the very few that actually drives the cars long distance, that lives with them, through their flaws and/or virtues, which provides the experience that enriches your opinion, since we all watch you go through it. Really value your input, the way you've been producing EV content and testing them sets you apart from all others. Sincere thanks for all the hard work!

1k challenges are cool, but not necessary, you get a pretty good impression of how the car will fare on shorter trips like this. especially for norwegians I think the realistic long trip consumption numbers for really cold weather like this are more interesting and useful than the mostly repetetive 1k challenges.

Of course I won't stop doing 1000 km challenge. But the problem with Nio is that battery swap needs to be done during opening hours which is betwenen 7 and 22. And the route via Sweden is 20 minutes slower because of landslide. Another problem is that I have already done 1000 km challenge with almost the same car (ET5). There should be a limit of how many 1000 km challenges I actually do. At least a bigger battery, faster charging curve or something else should trigger a new test. I have seen in the past that people are less interested in 1000 km challenge if another car which was almost the same has already done it before. As for Arctic Circle trips, these trips takes two full days. As long as I don't want to stress too much, the trip starts early morning the first day and I often arrive really late the second day. Now that I have a 1.5 year old daughter and my wife is pregnant, and we recently moved to a new house which requires lots of stuff to be done, I simply can't go to Arctic Circle. In the future when I have more money I can hire a babysitter. But this won't happen anytime soon as you also know the financial issue I have with the new house.

I recently went for a test drive, and I must say I loved every aspect of the car except for the price, the lack of a frunk, and NIO's battery leasing strategy. If I purchase a car, I want to feel like I truly own it. I know you can pay the extra price to own it 100%, but for me that price is way too much when compared to what you get from the competition.

I’ve driven a lot of NIO’s for my work. They’re lightning fast, comfortable and have loads of features as standard. Charging is cool too, although the patented battery swap is realistically kind of shit financially. Unfortunately it’s no match for the reigning elite, especially the Germans, in my eyes anyway. The NIO autopilot is ridiculously bad. Lane changes are horrific with the cruise control on, and there is loads of “ghost-braking”. It also has emergency stopped for seemingly nothing 3 times in the year I drove them. I think NIO looks stunning (apart from the weird camera’s up top) and they can really get far. But if you don't like it, please know that Nomi on the dashboard is a 600 euro option. If you do not choose the cute display, you get a RGB LED halo type thing instead. You gave Nomi a pair of headphones, so it cannot hear you. This climate test is a very cool one. The car is really nice, and 22 kWh/100 km in minus 24 degrees is not great but also not very bad. Nio has some work to do to make their cars more economical. I experienced -20 degrees once, it was doable having good insulating merino wool undergarments and a wind-proof jacket. Having good insulating gloves, shoes and a scarf is essential.

18% in 4hours in -25 is quite a lot... If I am stuck in winter on motorway in the traffic with 30-40% of battery it might be problematic. Maybe not in Norway where you have 50 stations every 10km you can roll to one haveing 1-2% but in Poland where you have 1 every 50km...

Wow, compared to a Model 3 this Nio "säuft wie ein Panzer" (drinks like a Tank). You did a Test with a Model 3 in even colder weather and longer. Model 3 used 1,95kw/h or 3,1%/h (9:20h 29% -25°C) and this Nio sucked 4,2%/h (4:16h 18% -22°C) although it has a bigger Battery it will last less long and if it would have been heating as long as the Tesla it would had even higher average consumption because the Battery cools down and it can get less and less (to none) heat from it.

@@haukionkannel Most new taxis in the north are out around the clock waiting or driving. The wait is a big background variable as it means that the car must be kept warm with energy from the battery and nothing else. They normally do not carry extra heat with them. And of course fast charging makes it even worse. Waiting in car queues with the heat on is also usually the reason why electric cars need to be towed. And a fossil car will also need to be towed/refueled if it has to sit idle for hours to keep warm. Taxi means that the car will wear more in relation to mileage. Possibly good service can compensate.

  • @DIYglenn

IMHO, battery swapping is just idiotic. It must have some wear on the connections or bolts or whatever. And there will be issues with sand, snow, salt. A good charging infrastructure makes much more sense, because it will also be accessible for all cars. I charge when I can, just stop, plug in and do a 10 min break, and continue driving. "Charge when you can, not when you need to."

You can still DC charge a NIO if you prefer waiting. The new 100 kWh pack charges quite fast too. Battery swap is an option and in many cases it makes sense instead of waiting. I am not sure if 10 min charging break will add that much range in all real world conditions even with increased charging speed.
