The death sound isn't always a sign of your Wii U being dead, it can also mean the game froze. I had it happen once when there was the Nabbit glitch on SSB4, I was Mega Lucario, and I tried doing the bug, and I got the exact same noise, only my game frozs so I had to shut off the console and turn it back on.

I’ve had the red light of death before, and it freaked me the hell out. I searched it up, and I found so many horror stories of people not being able to fix their Wii U’s. Thankfully all I had to do was clean out the vents, but there was SO much dust in them, that I’m surprised it didn’t overheat earlier!

seems like you either have this problem or your wii u is fine with having 5 kilograms of dust stuffed in its vents

"The Sound of Death" is not that hard to get. You just have to play online for hours and it will appear more than once (even if nothing bad happens to the console)

It can happen to you in the middle of a game, in the Wii U menu, when you turn it on (in cases where something serious happens to the console), in the middle of a download, etc. I played the Wii U and several times that sound appeared even though nothing happened to my console, that's why it is normal for me.

yep. just like the gamepad can also have corrupted looking textures displaying in games but the game is just fine on the tv. (only happened to me during minecraft, but only in minecraft, and very rarely.)

That sorta crash sound happens a lot due to how the Gamecube/Wii/WiiU all halt the CPU during a really bad crash. The crash handler doesn't bother to clear out the DSP (audio processor) data buffer, so it just repeats a small part of the audio over and over until you cut the power. Since the buffer is very small, it creates a high pitched, harsh noise.

It happened when my brother used the grappler glitch in wind waker. It played, and the screen was frozen and the game crashed. We actually panicked cuz we never seen that happen before, and after restarting the system and looking up the solutions we were able to fix it.

I remember, one day I was played Black Ops II on my Wii U, started playing then, an error and there’s a gray screen with glitches and the classic sound when your console crashes. There also were numbers.

The sound of death doesn't kill Wii Us. Its happened several times for me. I homebrewed the Wii U, and sometimes the Homebrew Launcher fails to open with TSoD.

If you were ever interested in doing a 3DS all errors, I have some minor tips for it. My New 3DS XL, old 2DS, and New 2DS XL all experience problems with reading all of my game cartridges (yes, I do realize that means the game carts are to blame. Unrelated note- still haven't found a fix, no amount of cleaning the carts ever works). Anyway, there's a couple things that could happen. 1. The game icon appears in the menu, but the graphic that's supposed to be displayed on the top screen is not shown. Selecting the icon will result in the message "The game card could not be read," or something along those lines. 2. The game will be read enough to appear in the menu properly and can be selected, but just after the 3DS logo ends, it displays "The game card could not be read." 3. Either the same as 2, or it could happen in the middle of a game if I happen to bump the area where the cartridge is. It displays "An error has occurred." There are no number codes associated with this error. I'd also just like to share an extra story of when #3 happened while Kirby: Triple Deluxe was auto-saving, resulting in every save file being erased. Ouch. Hope this helps! Just reply to this comment if you have any questions, I wouldn't mind doing a bit more messing around with my consoles to get more specific info if needed.

The sound of death doesn't mean that the console is bricked. I get it very often when playing Splatoon or Yoshi's Wooly World (even though i sometimes get 'there's a problem with the system's memory' error so it's probably somehow broken but that happens rarely)

The death sound, as many said, is just a general game crash. I've also had it happen (many times) when attempting to homebrew via the browser hack (because it's a very consistent method, in that it crashes most of the time).

1:02 there's other way to make this error apear. You need 2 game discs. For example, you play MK8. Then, go to Wii U's menu and insert other game (for example, Splatoon) but don't play it, only turn off the console. After that, turn on the Wii U by pressing the power button on Wii U gamepad, and one menu will apear on the gamepad screen. In this menu, there are the icons of the last programs you have used in Wii U. If you press the MK8 icon when other disc is into the Wii U, the error will apear.

Once i was fighting a boss in Skylanders Superchargers when it Sound Of Deathd on me. I later did beat the boss. It also happened when i wanted to play 2 player Swap Force, so i think it’s triggered by a crash.

2:55 I had this happen to my first Wii U after launching a game from the eshop on the system memory. The game, Super Mario Advance, had previously ran fine, was even beaten before. But that time it barely ran before everything froze like that. So of course I reset the Wii U… but when selecting a profile it always crashed, never would load the menu. The next day, the entire thing was permanently bricked, couldn’t even get past the Wii U screen anymore. Everything was gone like that, and I’ve been calling it the crash of death. Having learned my lesson, I now store all data and downloads on a external storage for my new Wii U in the hopes of protecting its weirdly fragile system memory, and I’m about to back up its unique NAND so it isn’t a complete loss like the old one if something happens.

My wii u was the victim of the error at 1:30. RIP 2014-2020

I always and only had “The Sound of Death” one. I was always really scared when that happened bc I thought my console was dead when I was a kid xD

Fun fact: you get the error at 3:17 if you try to push a block with a button on it into a door with a piston in Minecraft: Wii U Edition. It happened to me and the error is still on the Minecraft bug tracker.

My Wii U is partially bricked because of this, I can’t get into most apps, including system settings and no Nintendo games will load.

I think I once had the sound of death happen to me. I remember distancing my game pad relatively far from the console.

The Sound of Death is actually really common, as it just indicates a crash in the console and rarely means it's bricked I got it once while trying to use Pretendo on my modded Wii U, console didn't get bricked at all

4:49 if i had a Wii U, i would want this to be my boot screen, let’s just hope there is a special one that i can use for my nintendo switch.

I never saw that on GCN, only Wii and Wii U, but finally i see a GCN with that

3:12 I’VE HAD THAT PROBLEM SO. MANY. TIMES...

I once had an error on my Nintendo Switch when I played Mario Kart 8 and there was a sound that sounded similar to that of the Wii, but the sound had a different sound.

Thanks, this was helpful but the sad thing is that I have loads of data that will be lost if none of these are the problem :(

1:23 this one always used to annoy the hell out of me when a power outage occurred

The sound at 3:16 used to always happen because of the placement of the console. (I changed it's position and no more annoying sound + I actually have 2 wii u's)
