Nintendo Power Issue #7 - July/Aug 1989
Ойындар
Episode 52 - The last Nintendo Power read-through I did ended up being the most popular video in the series, so let's do it again! This is the 1-year anniversary issue and only the 7th issue of the magazine. A great line-up of games includes Mega Man 2, Dragon Warrior, Journey to Silius, Super Off-Road, and many more!
Show notes:
- I wasn't planning on making this episode right now because I have other videos coming down the pipe, but this sponsorship opportunity came along, so I wanted to take advantage. No doubt a few vocal naysayers are going to have a problem with this, but I really was serious when I said that we need stuff like this if the show is going to continue. Or at the very least, the magazine read-throughs.
- I smashed my thumb in my car door, that’s why there’s a black spot. It's almost gone.

Great episode. Please, make some more videos as this one. It's very nice when you show the magazine pages together with real videos from the actual games. Kudos from Brazil.

CGQ with breakfast, what a pleasant surprise and a great way to start the day!
AWESOME I love looking through these old mags! I just did a nintendo tribute to 1987 this morning, it's a good day for classic nintendo gaming!
These are great! I love how you take time and read through the magazine and reflect on your youth with whats on each page.
Thank you so much for this read through! Mega Man II is still my favorite NES game all these decades later
my wife asked me why I was all YESSSSSS! this morning... I told her -CGQ BABY! I'll tune back in after the chores and such, video games (and this comment hahaa), lunch, then watch this, and maybe even a nap as I have the weekend off, (as most folks I work most weekends) YEP, weekends off always remind me of like, 1986-91 or so. Being a kid, having a sleepover, pizza, mowing the lawn and other chores to hopefully convince the parents to bring us to Go-Video to rent some video games! And playing outside of course...so.... Seeing as you uploaded a new video that brings me back to those days, today just keeps getting better! thanks man! Cheers all

Rich Hughes..... that's the thing, what drugs did any kid need in graded school, these trips down memory lane bring about that excitement we used to feel after a week at school, here comes the weekend full of playing outside, ride your bikes, play video games, sleepovers, building forts, crab apple fights, baseball cards...whatever, the concept of this channel brings me back to those fun times... Nostalgic memory lane. One should embrace that, at least I hope we all can anyway... Thanks for the reply dude
I love these magazine vids! You really know how to make going thru a magazine more interesting! I love how in depth you go with your description of things, accounting your own experiences and such. Thanks for making these!
Always enjoy the Let's Read videos. I enjoy spending random nights going through gaming magazines. Lots of fun things you forget about that have been lost to time
This was the first issue I got in my subscription. Brought back SOOOO many great memories. I remember revering every issue because we didn't have the internet so otherwise you either got stuck in some games, or called one of those stupid "tip lines".
I remember having a subscription of nintendo power as a kid and having at least the first 3 years of each mag. Man I wish I would have keep them. Good video.

Thanks again for doing another one of these videos. I love this stuff, seeing it pop up on my recently uploaded list makes me very happy. I had most of these magazines you've done so far when I was young, seeing them again I can practically feel the pages and remember the way they smelled as I opened them up new. Like lots of people into games back then I wore them out from reading the things over and over. Keep it up, great content. Edit: holy crap the Dragon Warrior manual! Wow the memories! I got that game free too of course, and I remember that summer playing it every single day for weeks. I was addicted to it. It wasn't my first rpg, I had played some stuff like King's Quest and Ultima on the PC, but it was my first jrpg and I loved it. I would just mindlessly grind for hours. The patience I had back then! I was so proud of myself for beating it. I wonder whatever happened to my copy of that game...
What a fantastic Saturday morning surprise! Keep up these amazing read through's. Makes my day that much better! 👍
I really love this series - really well presented and editing in the gameplay footage is fantastic and a really welcome addition - really takes this series up a big notch. I know the episodes are long, but my attention is kept throughout. Keep up the great work :)
Good video. Takes me back to my childhood. Good times.
Dude you have a sponsor! I'm so glad you're getting money for this stuff now! Please keep up the great work :) I watch these to get to sleep, nostalgia takes me to a happy place.
Thanks for all you do.

I really like how you formated this. Good watch!
Thank you sir! These read-a-longs? are an awesome way to start the day
So awesome! I love the clay modeling cover art Nintendo tried on some of these covers.
Wow, I never noticed how incredibly well animated those birds in Iron Sword were. Their flight animation looks amazing for Nintendo.
Man, this is the only issue from my 6-issue childhood subscription that has survived to this day!
I am so glad other people like these read throughs.
The original Bigfoot was not too far from my childhood home. If I recall, they displayed it in the parking lot of a 4-wheel drive shop that was near I-270 and 67. The original was very small by today's standards of monster truck.
perfect way to wake up
Chris, When you started talking about some of the things Mega Man 2 introduced to the series and then said something along the lines of “but something I didn’t know was...”, for some reason I thought for SURE you were about to mention the fact that the rather famous Mega Man 2 intro theme is the same theme Capcom used as the ending credits theme for the first Mega Man game - thus, in a sense, connecting the end of the story of Mega Man 1 to the beginning of the next story in the series - where Mega Man 2 picks back up. Personally, I have always wondered why they didn’t continue doing that on down the line, at least with the “classic series” Mega Man games - to me, it seemed like it would have been such a cool way to low-key ‘link the chain’ of successive Mega Man titles on the NES, and, in my opinion, a neat little tradition could have been started had the idea played out beyond merely Mega Man 1 and 2. :) Love the channel, keep up the great work, and I think it’s excellent that you picked up a sponsor for the show! After all of your hard work, you deserve it! Can’t wait for the next “Let’s Read”! - Derek
The art for the Dragon Warrior article is super cool, always loved the hand drawn art in Nintendo Power
When I was 12 years old my entire life revolved around when the new Nintendo Power was coming in the mail. Thanks for the video!
Love your videos Chris! Keep it up!!!
Really love your content please keep it up
Dude! I'm in the NES achievers in this issue!! @42:24 Craig Sullivan, New Port Richey, FL: T&C Surf Designs. I was 13 at time and thrilled when they put me in there! I had taken polaroids of a lot of various scores for months and this was the one they finally chose.

Beautiful video! Thx for these memories. At that time, even in Nintendo Club and something of pride on it. The NES had its own charm, I remember so many good games. I had a really great childhood and I still think the 80s is a very nice time ...
Great Job! Very entertaining thank you
omg, i love these, should do volume 100 of Nintendo Power, its epic.

I'll have to see if I have that one...
When you said that Big Foot looks like an old truck now (vs your childhood memory of it) I literally did a spit take. We are about the same age and I agree 100%
I love this channel concept! Definitely remember this particular issue very well. You dismissed the Classified Info tip for TMNT a little too easily, though -- I was stuck FOREVER in the level they show because I didn't realize I needed to tap-jump over a gap instead of just holding the button down normally.
i remember my dad taking me and my older brother to see robocop when it was in the theaters i was like 6 or 7 in 87. also nintendo had a lot of r rated movie games platoon, predator, rambo, mad max, friday the 13th. i had a tiny emerson black and white tv that i played games on and watched cartoons as well.
Perfect with my morning coffee, thank you.
This brings back memories.
Thank you for making my saturday!!
this was one of the nerdiest things I've watched on youtube. thank you for full filling my needs

Hahah, cool. Glad you liked it!
Good timing, I just had a dream last night that I bought a bunch of Nintendo Power magazines at a retro store in the mall.
Awesome episode Chris! Just got done waching it all and it was super enjoyable. Faxanadu is a minor classic as far as I'm concerned. It got a decent bit of press back in the day. I had it growing up and am very attached to it (still have the beautifullt illustrated manual, with passwords writen in by my 8 year old self). The ambiance is stunning, the game lenght is just right for me, not too long, it's just a joy to play. I'll always be a very sentimental game for me, one that give me warm feelings of nostalgia.
You should do more Nintendo Power readthroughs.

Trev G so true
My understanding was that the Shorts section was for games that weren't that good and deemed unworthy of larger coverage.
I’m giving some love the Simon’s Quest. I loved that game as a kid.
I was already a Nintendo Power subscriber, but added another year just to get Dragon Warrior for free. Otherwise, I would not have purchased the game. I was new to RPGs, so I’m glad they also included plenty of reference material and guides with Dragon Warrior, to essentially tell you exactly how to beat the game. I still have all this stuff now. Thank you for this video, and bringing back memories!
Oooo!!! The first issue after my OG subscription ended! Never read this one!
love the vids, keep it up
Finally another video.. Ty
Legacy of the Wizard was basically impossible for me to play, I didn't have a manual or any guide, and the game had super obscure ways to advance, almost like they forced you to buy whatever guide you could.
Great vid.
I'm a simple man. I see CGQ uploads, I watch and leave a like.
Best Megaman 2 music, toss up between flashman and airman for me!
Really good
Dragon Warrior is responsible for a lifelong love affair with RPGs
Megaman 2 is such a great game, I'm glad to have grown up in a time where this was a go to rental at my local video store. For whatever reason I always played the flash man stage first.
Wow! The feels.
Lol, the castle themed Legos. I was in to them to. I remember the little canons you would stick the round pieces in and flick the back to make them shoot.😀 I also had a couple pirate sets including the blue and white stripped ship.
More comfy reading time.
Very cool to see another original Dragon Warrior fan from back in the day. It was my very first RPG and is what got me absolutely HOOKED on the genre to this day. Can't believe that you didn't like the original TMNT tho, I freaking LOVED that game and still do! I think many ppl don't like it solely because of it's difficulty. That jump control tip is actually not useless at all, it is in fact probably one of the best pieces of advice you can get for that game, as it is absolutely essential to just lightly tap the jump button any time you are trying to cross tough platforms like in the sewers. Simply tapping the button to do short jumps makes those areas rather easy when most ppl seem to struggle with them. I think ppl that really struggle with that game tend to be ppl that aren't very good at video games in general, as it really isn't THAT hard once you get the hang of it.
Nice. This was my first issue of Nintendo Power.
17:54 - Yeah, it's interesting to see Castlevania II at #8....especially since the game doesn't appear on any of the lists for Player's Picks, Pro's Picks or Dealer's Picks on the next page at all.
@SMAAAASHTV
3 жыл бұрын
It's actually in both the Pro and Dealer picks getting 1492 and 1437 respectively, which equals the 2929 score it got. It's just listed as Simon's Quest.
Definitely one of my favorite games ever.
Very good episode, as usual!! Cheers from Portugal!! By the way, when we have a special retro racing game from the 8/16/32 bits era? Keep up with the excellent work!
The MM2 instruction book actually suggests taking the Airman stage first - in fact, it has a tutorial for getting through the level.
This issue was the first one to debut in Canada.
Air Man's, Bubble Man's and Wood Man's stages have my favorite music in the game
This was the first issue i recieved. I was impressed with that arcade cabinet as well.
I never played Mega Man as a kid because the Captain N cartoons made him an unappealing character with his voice and artwork. I never bothered to rent the game as a result and never played it at a friends. I never gave the poor little guy a try and it haunts me!
17:55 - That's all because of the infamous first AVGN episode. It was considered an NES classic before the AVGN.
Another great video. +1 to the people who recommend Jackal. I used to play that every day after school with my best friend James. Definitely a classic.
Changing blades every week, that's insane! I use mine for months
I got this issue of Nintendo Power for free for being a subscriber to the Fun Club. That spread on Mega Man 2 literally sold me on the game, and I never played Mega Man 1. I remember rushing to the store to buy it with newspaper route money only to find out it wasn't out yet, so being a kid who needed to go home with something I bought Rad Racer instead. Great game but no Mega Man 2. I did end up getting Mega Man 2 on the day of release a couple weeks later and it was as amazing as the magazine made me think it would be!
This deserves a sub and hitting the bell.
Seeing that finnish inappropriate staying is forbidden- sign makes me always happy. I had one of those in my room as a kid too :D
Holy shit, I had those castle-themed Legos too and forgot about them until now.
I love videos like these. Well done. Also, I can vouch for Dollar Shave Club. The razors are friggin' amazing, and they're cheaper then stores. Plus the shave butter smells like sawdust. A very nice scent and works beautifully. I'm not working for them, I just love their razors.

Thanks! Yeah, the shave butter is cedar-scented, so that makes sense.
Loved Blaster Master. Upgradeable tank and foot battles. It was awesome. Loved Dragon Warrior beat it completely on my own like most games in the day and today.
Let's Read, awesome idea! Also, +1 Castle Lego
1989 was definitely a better time to be alive than 2019.

Sad but true.
Guerilla War reminds me a lot of Iron Tank (another SNK game), right down to the white flashing screen during explosions, sound effects and control scheme. I wonder if they’re built on the same engine? I loved Iron Tank as a kid. It’s SNK Hard(TM) but a ton of fun! I’ll have to grab a copy of Guerilla War.
Mega Man 1 for me, was the best game that actually had more decent game play. gotta love them hard challenges.
Good stuff
Engine Joe ... Haha That takes me back a few centuries ... wonder if Engine Jim was in that game, too?
Legacy of the Wizard is one of NES's lesser known gems. Highly recommend. One of if not the BEST soundtrack on the system. Really. Mega Man 2 / Zelda 2 tier. Soo many awesome games this issue. Also, YES.. Shadowgate was quite scary lol.
Loved this episode! I always thought Megaman was impossibly difficult to beat. The soundtrack of Megaman is the best out of any other game in my opinion and embodied that classic late 80's/early 90's video game sound. There are some excellent metal covers online as well

I think that Mega Man 2 is pretty approachable, difficulty-wise. If you haven't tried that one, you should. And I agree about the music.
Those Bigfoot trucks are different!
There's a Xanadu song from Rush also.
