Direct Live-chats are either "WHERE SMASH", "WHERE SILKSONG", or "WHERE SWITCH 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO". I have to turn it off so I don't have to deal with the noise.

The announcement was made in the middle of Nintendo's quarterly investors meeting last night, and then subsequently tweeted out. That's what happened with the Zelda movie as well. It wasn't as random and out of the blue as people think. In this case, they _had_ to bring it up because this was their end-of-fiscal-year report and they had to share their plans for the next fiscal year to investors.

Something I'm confused about that nobody seems to be talking about, the march 2015 announcement Fukuhara mentioned wasn't an unveiling it was a comment in tenelse shareholder meeting like "yeah the Wii u didn't work but we have something even better planned, promise!" The switch itself didn't come out for two more years after that? It's interesting framing to say the least, why not talk about the *reveal* of the switch if this upcoming announcement is a reveal?

A switch 2 isn’t a surprise. It’s the fact he literally gave us correct expectations for the direct. Turned the direct into “the last badge”.

I love how the tweet is very matter of fact and shoots down speculation. Like, revealing it at the June Direct. They know how the fans work.

I’ve just resigned myself to waiting and expecting nothing regarding the Switch 2 for no long that once they announce an actual presentation date I’ll be absolutely shell shocked

By the way, I'm pretty sure this is definitely the earliest we've ever had a Direct announcement, right? A whole MONTH in advance!

Maybe it will be like Twilight Princess or Breath of the Wild. They might want to hold off on releasing it to make sure there is something good for switch 2 on release, but so much development work has been done during the switch era that I bet it could still run on the original.

No. It's still confirmed to be 100% for Switch. It's been in the product testing phase for a damn year now. They are waiting for Prime 2 ad 3 Remastered to come out first. They aren't going Prime 1 Remaster then jumping to 4. With backwards compatibility all four Primes will be playable on the new system anyway.

@@stanleygagner I'm hoping it'll be a next gen exclusive. We really don't know what's been going on with Metroid Prime 4 or how much development time it got on the Switch. It could very well have switched development over to the next console long ago. And it's important to note that in the case of Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild, the two consoles they released on were basically identical in terms of hardware power. So it releasing on both makes sense. I'm expecting a jump in power this time. So if development shifted to it, they would want to make sure it doesn't look outdated compared to the games it releases with. Especially since the Metroid Prime games were always among the best looking games on their consoles.

It's just so weird that we just know theres a direct coming next month. Like everyone already figured because we have the direct season patterns down but we were so used to them being formally announced like days beforehand. I genuinely have no clue what they're going to announce for this one so i have the most minimal of expectations. I kinda hope the last "one more thing" announcement for the Switch era is Metroid Prime 4, especially since they can announce it and then make "Also available on Switch 2 with enhanced performance" a major announcement during the successor showcase.

I don't think the Switch 2 marketing strategy is going to be anything like the Switch 1 marketing strategy for a glaringly obvious reason: The Switch had to be the answer to the unmitigated disaster that was the WiiU. They're following up on a success this time, and they don't want to screw it up like they did when they set out to replace the Wii.

My biggest hope is that they will make it clear that this is a successor and not just an add on like the Wii U.

I would guess that they don't want people to get extremly dissappinted with each Nintendo direct not being Switch 2 related so they just wanted to say "there will be a Direct, but not Switch 2 related" but they had to acknowledge the existance of Switch 2 to do so.

What I've heard is that this was probably prompted by the upcoming investor call - since they a) have to make the contents of that public, and b) have to tell investors if they're working on something for this fiscal year if they want it to count, they would have to make the new Switch public then, and announcing it this way means they can tailor the public announcement to temper expectations without having to spend too much time on it during the investor call.

i like to imagine miyamoto and furikawa are having a bet to see who can announce the most insane things on twitter and not get fired first

Nintendo forecast 13.5 million switch sales for the fiscal year. That tells me two things: * the Switch will pass the DS by the time the successor launches, and coast past the PS2 on fumes. * they don’t expect the successor to significantly affect Switch sales this fiscal year, so they won’t talk about it until at least most of the holiday shopping is done.

I love the idea of the entire next console and all of its features gradually being revealed one tweet by one tweet. Not because that’s the best thing that could happen. No, it would just be the funniest.

It was refreshing to get news in such a transparent and honest way.

How did we get more clear information from Nintendo than Silksong?

Thank you for not titling this "Switch 2 confirmed!!!" like SOOO many other Nintendo KZreadrs. It's so disingenuous. All that was announced was an announcement for the SUCCESSOR to the Switch, which could literally be any kind of console. The Wii was the successor to the GameCube. The N64 the successor to the SNES. I genuinely don't understand why so many people think this is a Switch 2 confirmation, besides click bait.

"There will be a Direct this June, with no mention of the Switch successor. *But right before it will be a different Direct that totally reveals it! Wildcard, mother-* "

I feel like we're going to get a few cross-gen titles (or just one like Wii U-Switch). PLZA will probably fit that, but Prime 4 is more up in the air.

I mean it's not like we all didn't expect them to announce a console very soon...how else should they tell that it will be announced sometime in the next time? With an extra song? A dance number? Directs also get only announced with a tweet. They sometimes have those videos where they say something for 2 minutes, but I guess it wasn't worth it for those 3 sentences they had to say.

My bets the new name will be “Switch UP”

What has me slightly concerned is that it's hinted it might be a new MODEL, not a new system it's self.

This makes the announcement window very small. If they will release Switch games for the rest of 2024 it's unlikely that the successor will be announced before Christmas. This would mean it has to be announced in 2025 before March.

I heard "switch 2" over thousands of times and they finally confirmed it

So if Nintendo is officially giving us a 10 month window for the ANNOUNCEMENT + at least 3-4 months window for the release following the announcement - does that mean all the leaks that Nintendo was a month away from an announcement + release were total BS to begin with? Those leaks were indicating that we’d have a Switch 2 by a month ago, but now it seems like Nintendo is giving us more than a year of hints. I always thought the leaks seemed out of character for Nintendo, but this seems like total validation and confirmation that those leakers had bad sources.

I mean basically all Nintendo leakers are full of BS. Sure leakers in general have much better track records than they used to, but Nintendo is just locked up too tight.

My thinking is that they're extremely erring on the side of caution by saying the announcement will be by the end of the fiscal year. The person who first leaked that the Switch 2 was delayed said today that March 2025 is still the release target, and that a reveal will happen around September/October.

honestly I really love when they do this just shadow dropping some of the coolest stuff, and realistically I would imagine that Nintendo either gives us a September direct where they physically reveal the console and it comes out during the Christmas season or they will have a January direct and release it in March it would be quite funny if they released the switches successor on the day the switch got released.

I'm liking TopicArlo! It's been a nice sort of change to see you more often, and I can listen to you ramble.

This makes me pretty excited for what could be announced in JUNE (mostly coping for Twilight Princess HD, Super Mario Galaxy 2 HD, and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD)

I hope they go back to the Wii style of things. Music in the menus and apps, focusing on first party games, bringing the focus back to the miis and having games where miis are always able to be used. If it’s like the switch where we are getting generic party games again it’s going to suck

they very obviously announced the june direct now with those specifications along with the main point of the announcement of the switch successor so when the june directs comes people aren't expecting it to have switch 2 news and be disappointed

I'd imagine they'd like to have The Switch to go out with a bang, so let's see what will happen.

Reveal in October, presentation in January, release in March/April

Arlo... technically they only confirmed that it will be announced by this time next year. They theoretically could plan to release it in the holiday season and then have to delay it into 2026 :p

If they turn the switch into the game boy equivalent and still make a new system would be amazing way to get back to that model
