Nintendo DOES Listen To Fans

I keep seeing this sentiment that Nintendo doesn't listen to fans, and I gotta be honest - I find this thought baffling. Let's talk about it.

Yeah Nintendo does. In the switch generation alone, we’ve got: return to sandbox Mario, open world Zelda, Pikmin 4, a 3D Kirby game, a new 2D Metroid (and Dread at that) a Smash bros game with every character, Metroid Prime 4, and remakes of the most popular Mario RPG’s. We’re definitely gonna get new games in F-Zero, StarFox, and Tomadachi Life on Switch 2, Nintendo is digging into their older IP’s. The only thing I really want is a new Pikmin game that’s more like 3, but even then that’s probably gonna happen

Did these people also forget about Ultimate? The whole idea behind that game was making longtime fans happy and getting in long requested charachters people wanted to see. Nintendo went to DISNEY for us guys don't tell me they don't listen to fans after that. And I'm willing to bet they will keep that philosphy in mind as we move to the next Smash Game. People keep thinking alot of the roster will be cut, but I keep saying I don't think we'll lose that many if you just take a moment to think about it. The third party companies especially have gotten really chummy with Nintendo since Ultimate ended. And of course there's all the non smash stuff we got this generation too. Yes I am bummed we did'nt get a new Starfox or Donkey Kong game yet, but I'm confident we won't be waiting too much longer for those either because both Metroid and F-zero were in a similar boat but we DID get new stuff for them during the Switch era. Plus there's alot of stuff I did get that I can be happy for now, I never dreamed we'd get a Mario rpg remake even as Square and Nintendo mended their relationship. Kirby finally got his big 3d game and it was fantastic. I could go on but the point is there is a clear sign Nintendo is willing to listen to fans alot more and I don't see that stopping as we move to the next system.

I think its a matter of people wanting to hate them because of how lawsuit heavy they can be and protective of their IP. It inspires that mentality. Metroid is a good example for me. I remember getting into the franchise 2015/2016 when it felt pretty much dead, and within a close proximity of one another, Nintendo shut down the AM2R fan remake (just as it released thankfully) and released Federation Force, which nobody wanted. Back then it felt like Nintendo didn't care about Metroid at all and were happy to let it die. Now, 8 years later, we're chillin with an official Metroid 2 remake, Metroid Prime 4 next year (and it looks true to the first 2 games), Metroid Prime getting a perfect remaster, and, like you said, Metroid Dread. They couldnt have changed their tune more perfectly, yet I still feel some level of bitterness over how they treated AM2R back in the day.

I mean, Nintendo undoubtably listens to fans. Not all the time, but they do, and that’s undeniable with the recent releases. But they’re also a business, and they don’t always take risks and let some niche franchises lay dormant. I don’t think we’re never gonna see F-Zero again or Star Fox or the like. But they also definitely let those franchises languish sometimes. And it’s not a matter of not listening to fans, it’s just a case of… they still can tend to play it safe, even when they give us these great new games. Like, sure, Thousand Year Door was huge for me, personally, as well as many others, but it’s a safe bet. It’s super widely acclaimed. DKC Returns is a safe bet because Donkey Kong is popular and the game did well. Zelda Echoes of Wisdom looks super creative and like a super cool game that gives many people what they’ve wanted, but again- it’s Zelda, so it’s a safe bet. Something like Advance Wars Reboot Camp, though, was a risk. They let WayForward remake a more niche title. Pikmin 4 did pretty well for Pikmin, and it’s a more niche franchise, plus they also gave us Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch. They do also dip into the niche stuff and listen to fans there. I don’t want to say they let the niche series languish and don’t listen to fans for those, going back to that. The evidence is there, it’s just a matter of when they decide to get a project going for any given IP. Like, Metroid came back in a big way on Switch. They listen to fans, it’s just a matter of what they think the market wants. …And Yoshi. Since Yoshi games just kinda tend to happen and people just don’t seem to talk about them. Not that they’re not popular, they just don’t generate buzz.

I still see some Nintendo Switch owners who've played the most recent switch games, and still choose to hate on Nintendo for arbitrary reasons, because they're old and still refuse to believe Nintendo is getting better. So yes, Nintendo does listen to their fans, but they've betrayed the trust of their older fans and especially their REALLY old fans. That being said, they still take their products seriously, even if the tone of most of their games tell you that you shouldn't.

The idea Nintendo n e v e r listens to fans is literally a myth I'll never understand why folks keep trying to peddle. What was the entire Smash Ballot then? That time they specifically added friend rooms to Mario Maker 2 due to backlash. Making Twilight Princess after the backlash about Wind Waker's more cartoony approach. They for sure pay attention to fan complaints. And dont get me wrong. They definitely do still beat to their own drums in a lot of ways. The fact they still haven't figured out how to have actually good standard online features is telling of that... lol. But the idea that they're completely in la la land 24/7 is a lie. Honestly sometimes I even think its for the best that they're selective with what demands they listen to. As some gaming fans just really don't have good ideas... at all. But I do hope they listen to more universal criticism going forward.

The idea that Nintendo doesn't listen to its fan never even held water during the Wii and WiiU eras. Mistakes have been made but for the most part it was always just the complaining of whiny little children throwing a temper-tantrum until their favorite game gets mentioned again. No other company in gaming, (and few outside gaming) have managed to juggle so many IPs while also introducing new one and keep them relevant for decades.

You got to understand that its a lot more than just them not giving us a new entry. For Star Fox, nintendo hasn't been listening for years. Fans have been repeatedly been asking for a return to form for years but they either A. have a 3rd party make a game that doesn't resembles Starfox or B. Just remake the first game thats lesser. Whenever Nintendo makes a new starfox game its always attached to some stupid gimmick that sabotages the whole thing. Miyamotos "Gimmick First" philosophy is what consistently ruins the series because he makes a new game for the sake of a hardware gimmick rather then the IP itself. The whole reason why we didn't get a Wii entry is because Miyamoto couldn't find a unique gameplay style with the wii controller which is insane to me because that would have been the time to what he was doing with the Wii u but it WORKS. Speaking of, everything about Starfox Zero was because of the Wii U gamepad, even down to its story and presentation. It resembles 64 because he looked back at previous entries and thought that the 64 style suited his stupid gamepad gimmick. While yes Miyamoto stated in an interview that he wants to put more energy into Star Fox and Pikmin which has gotten its attention recently. Which might be leading to starfox in the future but again it's much less about getting a bunch of new entries but rather if their intentions. A new game would be nothing if they continue to do what they've been doing since the GC for StarFox. Unless the next Star Fox game is a Star Fox game with a NEW sequel story with ZERO hardware gimmicks, then yeah they don't listen. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason it didn't get a switch entry because the Switch didn't have a hardware gimmick for Miyamoto to use. Heck even going back to those GC titles and even that Starlink game has shown more respect for the series than Nintendo has. Star Fox Assault and Adventures expanded the StarFox universe with new planets, new Characters, and in the case of Assault EVOLVED the Star Fox formula. You know like how Nintendo does for mario or zelda. Star Fox Command while still being one of the worsed games did more of that and let us play other characters in the series. Something fans wanted to do but they just choose not to go back to for some reason. Hell Ubisoft treated them with more respect which how much research they did to faithfully implement them into Starlink. They mentioned Fox's home which most people wouldn't know about. They were able to implement Pukpuk eggs, a StarFox Adventures item into the corneria cake recipe as an Easter egg. How the HELL is ubisoft of all companies besting Nintendo when it comes to handling StarFox. It's one thing for Rare or Namco to do better but Ubisoft? That's just embarrassing. That's not even mentioning that Star Fox would be missing the Switch generation which you know has a bigger player base then the Wii U and previous consoles. Fans have been wanting it on the switch so it could have the switch effect because GOD knows how successful the follow up console will be. Not everyone got the switch for mario, dk, zelda, or fire emblem. I got a switch because I was excited for a new starfox game but all I got is a cameo in a open world ubisoft title and starfox 2. I've played and owned more 3rd party games then first party games. Make no mistake I WANT to be wrong. I want nintendo to surprise me with a NEW Star Fox Game with no hardware gimmick. I want to eat my dirty ass shoe but nintendos got to walk the walk. I KNOW that they are great gaming company, I know that they are better then Ubisoft which is why Star Fox fans are so God damn annoyed by their poor use of Star Fox. Star Fox use to be up there with Mario and zelda, 64 sold 5mil copies. It's not until they shafted StarFox in the GC era and Started to us it as a testing grounds for bad ideas that the decline happened. Then started looping the same game over and over. Nintendo just has to regain the good faith it use to have with StarFox fans. But until then, they don't listen.

@@BoTalksGames It's not simply about getting a new entry, it's about actually putting in the same effort and polish that they put into their other IPs. It's about finally learning that their GIMMICK FIRST philosophy with Star Fox isn't at all the best way to go. Do gameplay first, do something new with the story like Star Fox Assault. Getting a new entry but not resolving these issues mean nothing as now that's the biggest expectation and demand. I just want people who don't know anything about Star Fox to understand that. Look at translated starfox interviews on the StarFox subreddit. Please. Again I actually want to be dead wrong, I want to eat my words but read from the horses mouth.

@@bethanyh1637 That's not our fault. Nintendo literally refuses to stay consistent with the series and changes when they don't need to. It's like if zelda fans never got another ocarina of time like game but instead get ones that play like fire emblem, or metroid prime, or a mario platformer. These things aren't what fans want for zelda but now it's a mess because new fans were created out of these other entries. Now we can't really come to a consensus BECAUSE Nintendo created a mixed fanbase. It's like the Paper Mario's situation but worse.

Honestly, I rather have Nintendo be more communicative with their fans and player base instead of secretive and hiding their moves so closely. I do not enjoy surprises that much at all, and I rather have some communicative manner between Nintendo and their fans. I mean Nintendo close down fan projects, C/D KZread videos that uses their music and don't sell it anywhere else and don't get me started on the E-Sport competition as not everyone of them are for prize money.
