It was very unfair to give the point to the Playstation for 'Innovative Features'. The N64 introduced the rumble pack, joystick, Expansion pack, Microphone and the Gameboy transfer pack. You gave one example about how the Playstation used CDs instead of cartridges but the Saturn and Sega CD were doing that before the Playstation was. It was hardly 'innovation'

Stupid console wars! The PlayStation and N64 were both winners. During no other generation was there such a diverse and awesome take on gaming by two very different companies, with boat loads of great games on both sides. Lots of pride in this generation.

I remember my friend just gifted Goldeneye 007 cart to me. He was a really good friend.

N64 was so much more revolutionary. It introduced a joystick on the controller, rumble pak, demonstrated how to properly translate a 2D game into a 3D game(Super mario 64), and gave us 4 player split screen

Yeah, the first time I held a Nintendo 64 controller I felt it was a perfect fit for the games you played on it. Everything clicked. I had no problem picking up and playing Super Mario 64, Goldeneye or anything else right off the bat. Granted the Gamecube controller was a better design later on.

I would have disagreed based on Ocarina of Time being one of my number one games of all time. But... It was included on the Gamecube version of The Wind Waker making the Gamecube the console that I actually played it all the way through on. We also had Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin on GC so... you do have point.

PS1 takes this easily. It had a lot more variety of games that were incredible. It was a combination of quality AND quantity with solid, classic titles like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3, Spider-Man, the SmackDown! games, Colony Wars (a fantastic yet criminally underrated game), Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy 7 etc, Chrono Cross and so on.. N64 had some good titles too, specifically the Mario games, Conker's Bad Fur Day and WWF No Mercy, the Rare games, but they weren't all that big in the library and couldn't beat the PS1 games IMO.

***** The PS1 does that shaky thing because the PS1 builds its game graphics using a thing called Integer-Based Arithmetic meaning not every 3D graphic angle could be made so to make up for it, it would "shake".

Yes, there was actually a time when Nintendo had the most powerful console on the market as far as hardware goes. They had the lead in that area until the Sega Dreamcast launched. Odd considering that now Nintendo is known for always having the least powerful hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft's consoles.

N64 was never more powerful overall than ps1. Ps1 had fmv, and actually had one of if not the best soundchip in its generation. The n64 literally is a step back from the snes since n64 literally had no dedicated soundchip. Storage space sucked on n64 and ran cartridges. Ps1 ran cds and played movies known as vcds. Only thing the n64 had over ps1 was more controller ports, less loading times, and had better looking true 3d games i would say. Overall ps1 was graphically more well rounded and had better hardware features. Plus the controller was better too since it literally has the blueprint that has been followed up to the ps5 with obvious improvements since the ps1.

@@angrymobsters1599 By raw specs the N64 was more powerful than the PS1. The N64 CPU was a lot faster that the PS1 CPU (93 MHz vs. 33 MHz) which is almost triple the speed, and the N64 also had double the amount of RAM as the PS1 (4 MB vs. 2 MB). Also, the N64 GPU was capable of trilinear filtering which the PS1 could not do. There were some things the PS1 did better, but overall the N64 had the more powerful hardware.

@@robertsrt True. Nintendo staying with the cartridge format rather then embracing the CD-ROM was a mistake. That was a pretty big bottleneck for the N64 and prevented developers from taking full advantage of the full hardware capabilities. But I still think games looked better overall on the N64 over the PS1 even with that limitation.

Digital copoies of PS1 games bought from Playstation Network for PS3, Vita, and PSP will never scratch....and very cheap.

I think it's because the N64s format inhibited the console, put constraints on its ability. Nintendo were still in the 80s, using cartridge based technology, while all the other competitors were upgrading to cd. Graphics were superior on the n64 but they suffered from ghosting fog, pop up and soundtracks were limited. The PS1 indeed won the console war and had a 10 year reign -although this was mostly down to clever marketting, competative pricing, a great software catalogue and a superior storage format.

I believe Saturn and Playstation were roughly equal when all's said and done, but I don't remember the exact specs, so don't quote me on that. There was a nice article on this exact topic, comparing the three consoles (as well as a few others, I believe) somewhere on the web, but I can't remember where for the life of me; I saw it a long time ago and never bookmarked it.

+CAX 117 powerful doest mean better games. Same as 3ds and vita. By the look of it, nintendo will create a powerfull game using the NX but i think ps4 and xbone will remain.

i remember being taken to the store to buy a ps1 when i was 7 years old. its 1 of the best memories ever . i got resident evil 2 and the tryhard worker tried to talk my dad out of it lmao. called my best friend over and we played ps1 the entire night and didnt go to sleep until 6am haha..then christmas came around and my mom got me and my bro a n64 cuz hes a couple years younger than me and she wanted us to have more kid friendly games but 007 was one of the games we got 1st🤣🤣👍👍.

Also for that reason, the PS1 doesn't do deep story games well at all by today's standards but the n64 is still fun. There was no right or wrong machine in the 90s but now if I were to get 1, n64 all the way

Calling the round of exclusive titles "very, very close" is ridiculous. If Nintendo has only one thing going for it, it's that it's exclusives are untouchable.

+randumo24 actually the Saturn was a great system, it was best at Capcom 2D fighters. I used play my neighbor everyday with all the Capcom Saturn ports and they where head and shoulders better than the Sony versions.

I bought both at the time. But exchanged my ps1 for a Japanese import n64 as soon as available. Sold it when years flew by, but the nostalgia kicked in and today I own 5 n64 models and 3 ps1's.. And a lot more other consoles, accessories and games. Things I couldn't buy at the time or for other reasons. I like the n64 a bit more, because of the cartridges and more fun gameplay. No loading times and way more reliable hardware. Also the controller of the n64 suits me more.

OMG this is the BEST controller ever! to this day maybe apart from the Wii it was such a leap forward. loved both consoles and owned both consoles. @@denis-florian_0.57 They both have a d-pad on the left, start and select buttons in the middle, 4 buttons in formation of a cross on the right, and trigger buttons. The only thing the ps one controller added was another set of trigger buttons, and handles(although handles already existed on other controllers, the snes controller didn't have that.)

I remember being presented with this choice when they first came out. My sister said, "Get a PlayStation", my friend at the time said, "Get a Nintendo 64". After playing Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Tekken, I went with the PlayStation. I'm glad I did. Still, my friend had the Nintendo 64 and I did have fun with that too. But I'd still go with PlayStation.

Simple, Playstation 1 was called PSX when it first came out. No one knew about 2 or 3 or 4 so why title it 1 for?

I was fortunate to have both growing up. Being around 14-15 when they came out I honestly remember the n64 being more impressive. And without a doubt it holds up better over time. I still to this day have buddies over and we play some GoldenEye and Mario kart. With some adult beverages of course haha. So if I had to pick 1, the n64 is superior.

just a note; Resident Evil was not a PlayStation exclusive, it was released on the Saturn too. Tomb Raider was actually released on the Saturn first, about a week ahead of the PlayStation, in the UK at least.

How so? PSX clearly has better 3rd party support, but each console had lots of good exclusives (Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tomb Raider, PSXDoom, Silent Hill on PSX, Mario, Conker, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros, Kirby, Star Fox, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Doom64 on n64). To be honest, it seems pretty even. No clear winner imo.

The PS1 was my childhood. Loved every game I had on it.

I actually bought the Nintendo 64 BEFORE I got the PlayStation back then. But, the Nintendo 64's games were overpriced and there were FAR less N64 games than PlayStation games. That is, for every 1 N64 game there 10 more PlayStation games. The only games I liked on N64 were Mario 64 and Mario Kart. I think that Nintendo shot themselves in the foot and missed the boat by not making N64 CD-ROM based when they were thinking about it and had the chance. If they would have done that, the PlayStation generation would have probably been short-lived. After I bought PlayStation, my N64 ended up collecting dust and I ended up playing/buying A LOT more PlayStation games than N64 games. And I wasn't the only one! EVERYBODY liked PlayStation. This includes most of my friends, neighborhoods, relatives, college friends, girlfriends and most non-gamers too. People were impressed with the fact that PlayStation games looked or ran like movies; I could also upload my own audio while playing a game; PlayStation had more sports games and PlayStation not only could be used as a game system, but it could be used as a CD player as well. So, the PlayStation was used at parties too. PlayStation was simply a win win win. And that is why everybody liked it! After maybe Mario, hardly anybody played N64. PlayStation simply had A LOT more to offer with games and everything else. And Sony STILL do now with PS4! And a lot of people STILL like PlayStation products!

@Risen General The case about GoldenEye is the fact that it was one of the first FPS on consoles. GoldenEye was very important, on this case, for console industry, to help to take this kind of games from PCs to consoles. And the fun about this game is the four players mode. One of the best memories from my childhood, about videogames, is playing "007 - GoldenEye" with four friends, everyone trying to stole the golden gun from the others. Nostalgic!

@Risen General (Hi! Sorry to response too late. I was busy by these days). I agree ("Turok" was/is amazing, although I think "Goldeneye" was amazing too). And, in fact: It was difficult to have to pay so expensive in a cartridge, while CDs were much cheaper.

I'm surprised they didn't mention total sales figures. N64 - 32 million PS1 - 102 million. I enjoyed both consoles for different reasons but I wonder why PS1 sold so much more. Was it cheaper? This is a real question btw...

+Daniel Roberts I'm sure he doesn't care and also who you meant it for, I wasn't being a smart ass but seems like everyone's stuck with multiplayer now a days. Turok was pretty much an exclusive that would destroy any PSX exclusives.

I loved and owned both. I tended to play N64 on my own a lot because I loved the AKI wrestling games, OoT, and Mario. I loved FFVII and MGS, but mostly PS1 was my go-to when I wanted to play something with a friend because it had such a vast library. I think a tie is pretty fair.

I said the exact same thing lol. That clown holding the N64 controller was holding it like a moron, claiming it was awkward while holding the analog handle AND the D-pad handle. Id like to know exactly what game required that specific config, because I'VE never seen it. Then turns around and says the PS1 controller was innovative, while the narrator literally says its a copy of the Super Nintendo design. N64 by a mile, and its not even close.

@@brettmcclure241 Actually, holding the Analog and D-pad handle is great for FPS games! Use the D pad to move and the analog to aim, Z to shoot. Feels super comfortable! N64 controller was a case of wasted genius, people rarely realize how cusomizable it is.. You can hold it multiple ways for different games. It's really fun. I kinda hate how controllers are all homogenized now, basically all rip off the basic 360 shape over and over again, even the switch controllers..

Why is the Saturn not included here? When the PS1, Saturn, and N64 are considered, it gets more interesting. Of the three, the PS1 has the most well-rounded and diverse library, but in a strict genre breakdown, the Saturn and N64 would strangely win more genres than PS1. This is the only generation where all three consoles offered something truly unique and equally excellent. Throw in the PC and this is clearly the golden age of gaming.

The Saturn probably has the greatest library of 2D shmups, 2D fighters, and light gun games of any system ever released. Strategy, 2D platformers, racing, rail shooters, and general action games are also quite strong.

Both consoles are amazing but, Sony just made better decisions.

PS1 had A LOT of a games and A LOT of them are Great. They have something to offer for everyone... Kids can play Spyro, Crash, Gex whil adults can play Resident Evil, Thrill Kill, Metal Gear.

Happy to see this as a tie. Both systems were just too good to pick one. I grew up with the N64 but played PS1 at friends houses. Games are the main reason to pick a favorite console imo and both had such good games that are still some of my favorites of all time. So in this case a tie feels justified. Where is the Sega Saturn on this list?

4:19 The DualShock was actually not the first PS1 controller to have the 2 analog sticks. The more obscure (but still 1st party) Dual-analog was actually the first to do so, predating the DualShock by about a year or 2

In the N64, 4 players could play at the same time while the PS was only for 2 players at the same time. Some of the best games for the N64 were multiplayer: Mario party, goldeneye, Mario kart, Mario tenis, excitebike 64.

Though strangely enough you could hook up two mutli taps to the PS1 for 8 players. Then Sony did the same on the PS2 when the three other consoles had 4 ports.

I was a Nintendo kid growing up, but my cousin was always on Team Sony. Any time he would come over to my house, he was always ecstatic to play N64 and I always loved going over to play Playstation. It's crazy because when you look back to when you were a child, the console you didn't have in your home was always a treat to play any time you had the chance to. I really yearn for those days again. Times were simple.

ELVISFX there is nothing wrong with carts in fact I like them better and I'll tell you why. Carts load faster,disks are easy to destroy regardless of you being an adult or kid,they last waaaaaayyy longer,in my opinion they look cooler, and disks glitch more.

Cartridges last longer, CDs were better at the time. Every 64 game i have works, I'm sure there's a lot of ps1 games that don't work anymore.

When I was little my mom made me choose what system I was going to stick with, The PS1 or the N64 I chose the PS1 and I never regretted that decision since, That was in 1995 and today I still have my original grey PS1 with all my games in mint condition

PS1 Games I liked Spyro 1-3, Crash 2 & 3, Crash Team Racing, Street fighter ex plus alpha & EX2 plus, Street fighter alpha 2 & 3, Tekken 2 & 3, GTA 1 & 2, Smackdown 2 Know Your Role, Parasite Eve 1, Resident Evil 1-3, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, Einhander, N20 Nitrious Oxide, Metal Gear Solid, Time Crisis 1, Fighting Force, Megaman X4 & X5, Strider 2, Raiden Project, Megaman Legends 1 & 2. N64 Games I liked Super Smash Bros, Starfox 64, WWF/WWE No Mercy, Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 I respect the N64 for what it is but the PS1 wins for me.

Graphics are a lot better on playstation imo. More crispy, detailed and organic. On N64 everything looked blurry with sharp polygons and lines.

I still have my N64 and working perfectly!

+randumo24 Backwards compatibility on the PS3 almost destroyed the PlayStation franchise. The system sold terribly because of how overpriced it was, and that was with Sony taking a $300 loss on each console. Taking backwards compatibility away saved PlayStation.

+Constantinos Michael My PS one broke after 4 years. My PS2 broke after 2 years. My second PS2 broke after 2 years. My third PS2 has hardly been touched. My N64 still works perfectly.

They're both GREAT consoles with amazing games all around! :) I found myself replaying a lot of PS1 games, some from my childhood, and some that I've never played before and they really got me hooked in for hours on end. Especially Silent Hill and Colony Wars. N64's Smash Bros. is still sick! come on guys, stop the hate and just enjoy all the memories they've both given us. We're all winners here.

Smash Bros. is actually my favorite fighting game series. I have all of them, except for the 3DS port of SSB4.

I dread to think how much time I ploughed into Goldeneye and Perfect Dark in my formative years. N64 has the edge for those two games alone.

What I like about this generation is that both consoles were different enough so that both consoles were worth it in the end. N64 had the strong first party support, 4 player support of the bat, better graphics, and better performance but the PS1 had its improvements with increase in space, higher quality from music and sound, FMVs, and stronger third party support from the bigger boys like Konami, Square, and Capcom. Really no winner in terms of system performance, quality, or even library imo.

the wii u is not. the only difference is processing power and graphical capabilities, Activision basically ported over the Xbox360 version of BO2 to the Wii U

Super Mario, Legend of Zelda:OoT and MM, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Blast Corps., Castlevania and Legacy of Darkness, Conker's BFD, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong Racing, F-Zero, Goldeneye, Harvest Moon, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct, Kirby 64, Mario Kart, Mario Party 1-3, Mega Man, Paper Mario, Paper Boy, Perfect Dark, PilotWings, Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2, Pokémon Snap, Star Fox, StarCraft, Super Smash Bros., Turok 1 & 3 and Rage Wars. Also, not all of the games you mention are console exclusives. Resident Evil 2 was also on the N64, and the original Tomb Raider was also on the Sega Saturn, as well as Megaman X4 and X6 was on the GameCube.

Daniel Bell I realize that one or two of the things I mentioned were released at the same time or before on PC. However a few of them, we're released on other platforms a year or two after they were released on Playstation, so Thry were exclusive upon release.

Tomb Raider and Megaman X-4 were released on the Saturn and PS at the same time, and I take back X-6, as it was released on the GameCube at a later date. So, Tomb Raider and X-4 weren't exclusives.

Daniel Bell Well I just acknowledged that I was wrong on a couple in my previous comment. And I see your list there, they're both nice consoles but a lot of what I listed were entire series that weren't on N64, and they're all dear to me, to me the PS had the better exclusives, this comes from someone who grew up with both. It's all subjective but I still think Playstation should have bagged that category. (I'm actually not fond of Sony or Nintendo anymore.)

+AbdallahSmash026#1Fan Crash Team Racing was far better than Mario Kart 64 (not a surprise considering the three year gap). Crash Team Racing even had it's own story mode and far more game modes and race tracks! That is one example of the PS1 had an exclusive that was better than it's N64 counterpart, so it pretty much debunked your whole statement =P

Nintendo 64 is the best one that I have :D

PS1 is like the next gen snes from a different dimension. It's actually more similar to the snes in design and 3rd party library than the N64 is.

My n64 never got played. I hated the controller. I guess I was in my early 20's and nintendo just didn't appeal to me. Ps1 was just better. MGS, Crash, Twisted Metal, FF 7, and 8. Tekken, The list goes on. Even now my n64 want list stops at around 10 games. PS1 had millions of good games it seemed.

N64 games I care about: Mario 64, the Zeldas, Mario kart, rogue squadron, Conker, Kirby, f zero, star Fox, dk Racing, banjo games, Smash. Paper Mario. That's about it. And no I don't care about the ancient fps games on it. Killer instinct was better on snes. No other good fighters or rpgs. Who needs old racing games? No metroid, no punchout. And everything else was pretty much on ps1 and cheaper too

I think the PlayStation beat the Nintendo 64 but I will always love the 64

One thing that always bugged me was that pc and n64 owners were always visibly happy. But ps1 owners always looked with a mixed expression. Some ps1 owners were just pure miserable. Back in the day I was never able to get an n64 because they were sold out but one day I swapped my ps1 for an n64 and let me tell you virtually everyone loved it. Then my parents found out well returns my ps1 and spent the rest of my days playing it. But at least I played enough the best games to date such as resd evil 2, dino crisis, mgs1, ff7 and tekken.

PS1 is a clear winner in my heart because that was my first gaming system that is high tech and innovative at the time. Oh I miss my childhood, playing FF7, FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, Resident evil 2-3 and many more.... Thanks Sony!

I love both consoles to heart. But PS One had Metal Gear Solid, enough said.

I love both. I had the N64 and my cousin who lived next door had the PS. We practically lived in the same house because we were always visiting each other, enjoying the best of both worlds. I think towards the end we were playing the PlayStation a bit more, simply because we were getting older and wanted to play games like Tony Hawk with the full soundtrack and watch the video content. One thing I noticed was that his library of games was always growing because there were many PlayStation games that were like $20 bucks, meanwhile the N64 cartridge games remained pricey. Those were truly awesome times though, I’ll always be grateful.

Here's one to tip the scale in ps1's favor and that is, that it supported pirated games which made games much more accessible to a broader audience than N64. Back in the days the rivalry between those 2 was real, but majority of people that I know decided to go with sony instead of nintendo just because of this fact. Just ask yourself, would you rather have 200+ games at your disposal or 5 to 6 games :D

+Stefan Petrovic you got the point right, I lived this generation on my teens. PS1 was chipped easy, compared to ps2 in older versions you could switch a orignal game to the pirated and you could play the pirated without the special chip, not 100% working and in later ps1 bios you really wanted the chip. Nintendo lost the battle because of piracy, the N64DD should be better or the N64 from the start.

Wow a draw! I wasn’t expecting that... I was more surprised by this draw than I was the Wilder Fury fight last weekend.

I like em both. N64 for games like starfox, blast corps, Zelda, and so forth. But playstation killed it with racing games like gran turismo, need for speed high stakes, and dukes of Hazzard!
