Exactly. I always thought this was like the perfect 90s remake. it has the slightest bit of quality of life improvements. Like it feels exactly like the 90s game but updated JUST enough. I feel like current devs sometimes tend to overdo it when trying modernize classic games.

@@tonberrymasta It may help, but it's not a real reason. How many times we saw games getting 3Dzation on the games' sequels/prequels/spinoffs made by the original devs? It even amplifies your point of it being good and rare. Through these years... I've seen more perfect clones (or fanmade games) made by indie devs than loyal remakes. This general thinking of "3D is better" is so annoying.

@@thanatos8618Yeah but usually those games that got the 3D treatment were sequels and back in the day 3D was new, there was a lot to learn and a lot of challenges in adapting a game to 3D. 3D games play entirely different. I doubt they are trying to "remake the games" but instead are treating them like a director's cut. Cartridge games were incredibly limited in space and oftentimes developers would have to leave a lot on the cutting room floor. I bet they are really just making the games they really wanted to make back then because they are not constrained by size. All of these games still stick to the original scope.

@@thanatos8618 you bring up a really good point. It is not simply that the original creators are involved, but that they made a conscious effort to preserve what made the original games great while they added in the new stuff. It is indeed pretty rare, but it doesn't mean new dev teams cannot do the same. Sonic Mana and Shredder's Revenge come to mind.

I ALWAYS get SNES drunk video notifications around 7:00am to 7:30am and it's ALWAYS when I'm on my way to work so I have to wait until at least lunch time to watch them but today (Friday) I had just gotten a text from my boss saying that we aren't going to be working today so this is the first time I've been able to watch a video as soon as it dropped. Yaksha’s “jump down+attack” on enemies allows her to move from sides of the screen much faster. Reeeeeally helps with movement! 💪🏾 Edit: Also, I have a no damage stage run of her that I will post soon to my page to better explain and you can see the move. Ive had the run forever but haven’t cut it down yet to post. 🙏🏾 Edit again: lol I finally did post something if anyone is interested and it does showcase the use of the move and I also noted that her block+jump is fairly fast and covers ground quickly (for her) as well. Hope you view and like for anyone interested. Thanks. Blessings.

imo this is the best company working right now on retro games: they don't rely too much on nostalgia but improve upon every aspect of the original game by a wide margin. I just wish the market for these games were less niche, because they deserve all the success and we would also get more and more games over time.

Agreed on all counts. They improve so much and yet the respect for the original is so clear in everything they do. They feel so faithful to the originals and one of my favorite things about Ninja Saviors is that they even included the SNES and arcade soundtracks! That was what helped solidify this game as one of the best remakes of all time for me. I hope they start to sell to a wider audience. I think that adding easier difficulty mode options to more of their games would probably help.

Man. You just listing off the Natsume games that could be ported got me hyped. Spanky's Quest, Power Blade... either of those would be amazing. Anyway, yeah, spot on review. This game kicked the hell out of me before i really got the feel for it. You need to respect every enemy and, unlike many other beat em ups with a block button, you actually have to use it here to get the openings sometimes. Fantastic and decently long, good pacing... and the shared HP bar in 2p is a fun mechanic that'll have you cussing at your friend just like the old screen scroll deaths in the Contra days.

Love this game, I imported the physical version for PS4, rented the original version often on the SNES which I also played to death. This was on my radar from the moment it got announced. Ever since I got it, every now and then I pop into the PS5 and try to pull off a no-death run (to also be able to register the time) I only pulled it off with Kamaitachi, it's such a well done game it's fun to replay and try things a bit differently, figure out the best way to deal with enemies and bosses (Stage-5 boss usually gives me a hard time), I even used it to introduce a girl into gaming, she loved the game for how easy it was to pick up and start playing and almost immediately enjoyed it. My brother who also played the original alot was blown away when we unlocked Raiden. They absolutely knocked it out of the park with this game, it took a great game and made it even better, play it alone or with a friend, it's fun as hell.

The Tengo Project stuff I think really does itself a disservice by advertising itself as remaster as opposed to remakes. I saw so many people talking about this game when it was in-development and coming out that were under the impression this was just like a widescreen version of the SNES game, and that this (and it happened with Wild Guns too) were how the games looked on the SNES. It would definitely be cool to see the Tengo Project team make something new with the same degree of sprite work and polish these remakes have had. Like they’re probably never going to do the Gundam or Power Rangers fighting game, but they could do a really cool looking giant robot fighting game with original mechs. I think they’re also running out of sprite based games the Tengo team had previously done with Taito to do now too.

The SNES version of this game is probably my favourite side-scroller on the SNES. I still play it often. Ninja is my favourite character to play as, and Stage 1 and 2 have the best music for me. I was glad to see it get a remake on Switch, but I'm not too thrilled with now Ninja is now a THICC boy.

I love ninja warriors, i wish there were more games like it. The game has some depth that is akin to a fighting game, it's super fun to learn their moves and dominate the enemies. The remake is great too, it expands everybody's moveset and it's so satisfying to play. My only complaint is that there's no new stages. I wish there were a few extra levels (like the wild guns remake that had 2 extra levels), like a different campaign or at least a survival mode or something. Still though, the remake is very good.

Agreed on all counts. Also, I wish they had an easier difficulty option so that I could play it with my friends that don’t game often. Another good beat-em-up that has some of the options you mentioned plus extras (survival, boss rush, training, etc.) is Final Vendetta. Ninja Saviors and Final Vendetta are in my top 5 beat-em-ups of all time, alongside offerings from Konami, Sega and Capcom.

@@perlichtman1562 I'll check that one out. I just wanted more content for Ninja Warriors because it's so fun to play. Whenever i play a beat em up game i often feel like i'm just mashing some buttons. Like Streets of Rage 2, i love that game but it doesn't offer that much depth, even though if you compare it to something like Final Fight you'll see that SoR2 has much deeper mechanics. That's why i like SoR1 more than 2, because the jank offers some interesting mechanics, but Ninja Warriors is in a whole league of its own, so that's why i wish there was more content.

The original is one of my favorite SNES games, so this update to it was really exciting for me and I kept up with development how I could. I never had or wanted a Switch or PS4, so I decided to wait for it to come to Steam like the other Tengo Project games. Little did I know it would take them four years to do that for some reason. The previous games were put on Steam much more quickly. I would check on Steam periodically. It was pretty shocking to do that search last June and actually seeing the game show up for pre-order. The timing was good since I don't usually keep Windows on any of my PCs but I needed to test something specific, so I was ready to play it without any fuss. At the time, the game would not run for me on Linux through Proton like Pocky & Rocky. I recently checked again after upgrading my OS and it seems to be working through Proton now, which I mention in case it helps anybody. It just makes it a ton easier for me to jump back into the game, which I've been wanting to do. You're absolutely right about the quality. They did a fantastic job maintaining but also enhancing the visuals along with the gameplay changes and tweaks. The new characters are fascinating with how weird they are. I wish they didn't delay the PC version so long, but it's everything I wanted the game to be.

You've always showcased music in games (which I really appreciate) but I'd love to hear small portions of original sound effects as well. I think games like this would really benefit.
