I used to train Bujinscam way back in the day. I attended the 1989 Tai Kai in San Francisco to see GM Hatsumi. 250 people or more there, all wearing black belts without the skills. It had a definite shady belt selling mcdojo vibe. That was when I decided it was time to move on.

I have been in martial arts for over 35 years and one of them was originally NINPO Ninjutsu until it was watered down to Bujinkan. I continue to train and have moved more to my original style of American Kenpo Karate in which I do merge in the NINPO. But yes Anthony I agree the Bujinkan has been moved more into the money maker on western certification needing practitioners. Sadly. Love the show. Keep it real. Honored 🙏

While most think hand 2 hand/melee fighting when they hear *Martial Arts the term literally means "Arts of War". So technically espionage, spying riflery, military archery, etc are all Martial Arts even if we tend to not think of them as such. *Martial Arts is the Anglicized version of the Latin term that translates as Arts of Mars. Mars is the Roman god of war who's Greek equivalent is Aries.

Revenge of the Ninja is the best ninja movie. By the way, Bujinkan claims to teach nine schools, 6 of which are samurai schools. Although, they did play up the ninja image, especially in the 80s. Having said that, Antony seems to have done a lot of good research. Being that the ninja operated in secret historically though, there's probably a lot of things about them we'll never know. In spite of all the historical manuals.

I have trained with alot of people , alot of so called masters (a few japanese), but to be fair the most are not. Tatsuo Suzuki wado, fay goodman iaido, phillip holmes kuk sool won, and hatsumi. Robert Bussey had black belts in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido and was a good fighter before he went to Japan and trained with Hatsumi. He also had many students who were ex military and in the special forces. The list goes on and on.

Stephen K Hayse isnt the “American Ninja” that was Ronald Duncan. Ronald Duncan was teaching Ninjutsu as early as the 60’s and anybody who is a serious martial artist in NYC can confirm this. The Duncan family even has a letter form Hayse asking Ronald Duncan to teach him Ninjutsu. It’s important to stress this because he was a Black Panamanian name who didnt receive credit at first for discrimination back in those days. There was in fact discrimination against POC wanting to train in Martial arts back in those days. Proof of this is in Kung Fu Wusu a school in NYC the grandmaster Alan Lee received backlash for teaching POC even as far as back then. Discrimination existed and Ronald Duncan deserves his name to be cleared. He was even acknowledged in japan especially by jinichi kawakami.

Translation of scrolls is totally different than application of the scrolls. It generally takes someone who knows the system to be able to do the kata from the scrolls, as most of the are very vague on purpose. You have to know the system, it must be handed down from someone else who is deeply understands the system. You can't just read scrolls and expect to get the kata correctly.

@24:00 There is absolutely no way the 9 schools of Bujinkan were copied off some 1920s book. First off you can't just learn this out of a book. Second, you can't just copy some generic martial art as Bujinkan moves completely different from most martial arts. @@sonicredcr and you are going to believe this because some guy from Europe knows more than an older and much wiser Japanese guy ? And remember he came to Japan to study and learn from Hatsumi and not the other way around. And then he was kicked out and permanently banned. And it's easy to see why, there was a good reason for it. He knew Anthony was gonna be nothing but trouble and he was correct. Smart move on his part. Com'on dude, wake up ! Also Togakure Ryu is not the only one, there are two other ninjutsu schools. You don't even know what you're talking about. That is what his frustration was. He wanted to see the scrolls and must have pestered Hatsumi too much about it. You don't demand anything from a teacher. You should appreciate the fact he accepted you as a student and you should be grateful to receive his teachings and enjoy your training. If he was smart and was a true student he would have remained patient and maybe one day if he was lucky Hatsumi would have let him take a closer look at the scroll. But he wasn't smart enough to realize that. He demonstrated bad manners and the rest is history, he got what he deserved. I can't recall hearing about anyone else being banned from the Bujinkan. Did it ever occur to you that there was a good reason for it ? Probably not.
