I've been riding crotch rockets since 1989, I am always fully geared up. In 2005 I went down at 160MPH and if not for my gear my back, arms, & head would have ended me. I walked away w/ a giant hole around my knee. A coyote ran out in front of me on a turn and I instantly reacted just enough to throw off my angle which sent me off the side of the road, into a rail and 20+ yards down the highway. If you watch MotoGP or WSBK these guys are roaring well past certain speeds and if not for their gear would not have gotten up. Now I will admit, the adrenaline one feels going these speeds track or street is exhilarating, however, there has to be a balance between that fun and your safety. A helmet is never enough. I have seen people go down at under 30mph and w/o the right gear have road rash beyond comprehension. There is no substitution for the proper gear, fun aside.

@@FlyinZX10R I’ve been riding since 1965 and have survived doing stupid shit many many years ago back when my attitude was a lot different. Back then I only weighed about 125lbs, worked at a Honda M/Cycle dealership in Central FL and could make my bike damn near fly. Clutch? After 2nd gear who needs one? Lay down, feet stretched out behind, left hand on the shifter where my foot used to be; crack the throttle & snatch the shifter up at the same time. No delay in the shift. I was like a gun slinger with challengers constantly coming by the shop telling me they heard I had a fast bike and wanting to race.

Genuine question, in america why is it so incredibly common seeing someone on a hyperbike wearing next to nothing in the way of crash protection? Especially on full on super bikes. With how little gear they wear why not just throw away the helmet too. In Europe people on 125cc mopeds wear more protection

  • @dcptiv

Many countries don't regulate anything but a helmet. Here in Australia you can wear just shorts thongs & helmet. A lot of people will look at you as if you're the dumbest person on the rd but it is legal. The speeds & actions of this guy would be jail time here & even just posting it on here would be enough to get caught.

Mate, I assume you've never come off at speed have you? I mean, it's up to you, but if you continue to ride like that cutting through traffic at that speed you're not long for this world. I don't say that with any malice, but you are seriously pushing your luck. In my opinion, there's a time and a place and that wasn't it. I've ridden at those speeds many times but not in that traffic and not because I was trying to keep up with another rider. And don't get me started on your gear. No gloves, no jacket, crap jeans. You'd have been skinned alive if you'd come off. I was shown hospital photos of people who'd come off with minimal clothing when I took my test and they were just that. No matter how hot, I always wore the gear after that.

I fully agree completely, my girlfriends brother was going fast on a R1 in a two lane road got pushed off the road by a merging car and flew off the bike right into a stop sign, practically paralyzed him for a while he’s practically made of metal at this point and had to completely relearn how to walk again. For everyone saying how gear wouldn't make a difference at that speed anyway, I think watching about 30 seconds of MotoGP accidents shows you how much good gear can help you. Those guys regularly crash at extreme speeds and walk away without a scratch. Obviously getting run over by a car is a different story, though there are pictures of Arai and Shoei helmets saving someone's head from being run over, but if I'm going for slide I'll take gloves thank you very much

@@gamergirlandweirdo9264 Definitely not true. A decent set of leathers will cost you 400 dollars? Euros? Pounds? all pretty much the same. Decent gloves can be had from about 30, decent boots from about 100. And they will save your life. When you've forked out 20K for the bike, who TF is stupid enough to not wear under 1k's worth of gear? And the gear above will definitely increase your chances of survival by a significant factor. It has saved me on 2 occasions at those sorts of speeds. Of course, if you hit something, your chances are reduced, but still not zero. Coming off at those speeds without the gear, you might survive, but you will definitely wish that you hadn't. High speed road rash will grind your hands to stumps, but with even cheap (but proper) biking gloves, you will literally be writing the next day. Not proper boots? You'll be lucky to walk again. No jacket/trousers (US pants) expect months of skin grafts if you survive the shock.
