@SunsetSlimess I discovered after I recorded video that there is a little brass reset button on one of the control boards - there is a video out there that shows that you can carefully drill a small hole in the battery case to get a paperclip 📎 in to hit that reset button to wake battery up. Apparently works sometimes if that's all the problem is. Good luck with project!

@SunsetSlimess Nice! Any ideas on why only half the pack discharges like that? Never understood the why on that and discovered it on more than 1 pack. Glad that worked for you and that all went safely. Side note - My neighbor accidentally burned down their and our weekend places last summer. Not battery related but ... - I'm now paranoid about trying to boost Lithium anything! I lost all my escooters :( Found burnt out cells strewn about the ashes. Apparently cells can travel a fair way once they are 'shooooshing'. Anyway - may yours now bring you much pleasure. I've moved on to Wingfoiling for now - less risk of fire and a good workout to boot!🔥 😀 👋

The way to wake the bms up (no blue flashing light) is to apply 12 volts to the red and black wires, on the 4 pin plug. And boom good to go, if the cells are not buggered

I believe it's a 2p10s -- you had it backward. Each pair that shares the tab connection is paralleled (making a 3.6v @ 5.1 AH cell), which are then put in series to make 36v, 5.1AH = 183wh.

In your video, since all of your cells that you volt tested individually have good charge, what was the issue as to why the whole battery pack is considered dead?

  • @fixitdad899

Hey David - thx for watching and for commenting. Truth is that I don't know for sure. My guess is that the charging board..the top one of the pair has gone SNAFU. I'm not a technician- just a tinkerer. I'm in a bit of a jam to test the theory because I have no assurances that any of the charge boards I've scavenged are actually good. But the problem has to be that the circuitry in one of the two boards has activated cut-off to the cells. Much like happens in a hand tool battery that goes lower than absolute minimum charge. Not sure of why either. One small head slap for me is that there is a brass reset button on this top board. I probably should have tried researching that and tried pressing it before I ripped everything apart. Too late now. Might have been a case of just hitting reset. Sigh.

Is it possible to run the battery without hooking up the tx/rx wires, and just use the -c/+c for charging and the other cable for discharge?

  • @fixitdad899

    @fixitdad899

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Adnan ... not sure if I understand your question precisely but if you are hoping to bypass balance charging circuitry for any more than a very temporary duration I dont recommend but if you propose to utilize BMS on battery then... The TX/RX plug into the speed controller which in turn is supplied with power from the battery. Battery and TX/RX not connected directly. Pretty sure that so long as you are feeding 40v charge source direct into battery BMS there should be no issue. You can then draw the stored power out via the main power out cables. Just watch your current draw so you don't overload batt cables - these hub motors are approx 350w. Dont go hooking some 1500w beast up directly else the pixie smoke might happen.

Hey Marc I haven't 'bump charged' these packs but have done same to Ryobi 18v packs. Even have a vid for ya! kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmyZzcSxdKq8p9o.html It's the same concept. Before you dig in though...if your unit is new and warranty still intact. Would reco you swap for a new one. Way easier and keeps you in good stead for any future issues. If that's not an option I want to alert you to another potential issue with ES2s and ES4s. I had 'not new' ES2 do a strange thing on me. The external battery would charge fine but the internal battery started to 'drift'. Kept going lower and lower away from external level. I knew that if I let internal discharge too much I'd be in a pickle. Took things apart and it turns out that the junction point where electrical cables go into column from external battery pack has loosened over time. While external pack was off I was able to charge internal pack directly via it's original charge port..like on an ES1. I didnt have to bump charge because it wasn't completely discharged. Retightened and reassembled...all good now. I just want to give you this heads up because you're gonna want to know why your batt went to 20v. This issue 'might' be a possible cause. If you do open batt up you should check each batt junction like I did in video and isolate which modules are low. If they are all uniformly low that would be good. If some are low and some not. Bigger problems maybe. I would probably try to bump each module rather than all together. Less voltage required. Remember to keep amps low! Voltage just above where you start and slowly crank up as cell takes charge. Bump to say 3.3 - 3.5v per module. On board balance charger should take it from there. Low and slow and monitor temperature of cells. Best to do so outside. If they start to get hot... stop! Hope this helps and good luck on project. Post a link if you can.

Couple of diff methods. In some cases all you have to do is drill in and hit a brass reset button on the control board. In other cases there are ways to supply bump current without opening pack. Hi Mr. Lee Apologies I dont have a good answer for you - I recommend you reach out to folks on a battery builders forum - my gut says you should never mix ampere ratings as it creates an imbalance - maybe if the 2 single cells have a higher rating than the rest it might be acceptable but I just dont know. I would assume other way around would cause undue risk i.e. adding in 2 cells with lower ratings. Best wishes!

Not sure how you run but I personally think you are getting expected mileage for ES1. My recommendation would be to buy external add on battery pack to extend range and increase power. Changing out individual cells would be a very big job... you'd have to disassemble, identify bad cells, desolder BMS leads and take old nickel strips off. Source good matching new cells. Place new cells ...re-spotweld new nickel strips.. re-solder BMS leads...reassemble pack and hope you haven't messed anything up. Chances are new cells wouldn't be a good match for rest of pack and might cause rest of pack to age prematurely. But...that's how you'd have to do it.

(Like a compass from school days but with 2 legs) What I remember is having a challenge turning the plug counterclockwise in the tube thread until I used the calipers in the two slots/cutouts in those plugs. There is actually a tool you can buy that inserts into the tube and has two projections that fit into the slots. Think it's $50 or so. I'm way too cheap to buy it! Anyway .. I don't remember having to slide down a channel. I just remember having to spin counterclockwise a bunch to get it out. Does your tube have a thread along the inner surface all the way to the exit? That would be the tip off. All I can offer. Good luck with it!

Hmmmm...Do the voltages of internal and external match up? When you check app and you see say 50% or your 85% max state, is it on both batteries or is there a difference in voltage between the two? It's weird that internal won't take a charge directly agreed. If voltages are different, It (internal) might have dropped below minimum charge for charger/BMS to recognize it. Could try to bypass BMS and give it a brief bump charge to bring it up far enough for BMS to be happy if that is the case...or ya BMS could be done but...that would involve opening the pack up.= pain in keester Yep... might be time for a new replacement batt. Hello I need some help from you. I am from India and unable to get this battery pack. I have a basic carbon scooter without battery ( I had to leave the battery in Philippines due to air travel restrictions ) I am planning to build a battery pack and might need some info to build them. Please help.

@@fixitdad899 Thanks. I might need some photos and measures so that I can 3d print the battery holders or spacers. There is no other way I can get my hands on them. I gotta 3d print some parts and redesign some Circuits.

Sounds like you are technically capable...I'm not familiar with "Carbon" reference. Is that a ninebot model? Anyway...Just curious.. can you source ANY premade scooter 36-40v packs locally? Reason I ask is that I picked up a 'junked' M365 clone that had a burned out hub motor for very cheap near me. I just wanted the 30 cell battery inside for an eskate project. Couldn't you do similar? Don't have to worry about BMS and soldering (pain). Just create an external case for pack and affix to scooter somehow ... extend and plug in your 36-40v leads and good to go. Might even end up with better range as pack could have greater number of cells than stock. Might not be as pretty as recreating Internal battery but way simpler. Just a thought. Best wishes.

It's not too hard to create aesthetically pleasing curved custom case for cells that you can attach to upright steering column via 3D design. Tip -You can make segments that stack to prevent risking print failure from tall z print heights. Glue them together to desired height...make top and bottom caps to seal. Voila

@@fixitdad899 I mean a Generic China made Carbon Fiber scooter like this one kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2aWzrmrdbWroag.html&ab_channel=RCLifeOn In India there isn't any electric scooter like in other countries. I guess more that 95% People aren't even aware of its existence Electric scooter means a different thing in India So I am unable to get my hands on any parts. India and China also has a Trade war kind of situation so Chinese Imports are Blocked. My only way out is to build custom battery pack using 18650 that I can get here easily.

I think trottinette means scooter in English. If your question is: can you use a battery pack from another brand of scooter to run a ninebot? Answer .. probably but you'd have to be creative on how you attach/connect battery. Not sure how charging a 'foreign' battery would go or how software would react. If your question is could you use this pack on another scooter ... same answer really. Bonne chance!

Hi Eric - thx for confirming - I did have a 'I probably should have tried pressing the little brass button' a few weeks after I recorded vid. After watching an @jehugarcia vid. Live and learn! Hey - question 4u. I had another unit where exactly 1/2 cells were near completely discharged and 1/2 were good/near full charge. Any ideas on what might cause that condition? Appreciated. Have a great day.

You'd have to look up spec sheet to see exactly what that means ... individual cells run between 3.7v and 4.2v The 40v a ninebot runs at is achieved by putting 2 cells in parallel and then stacking 10 of these 2 cell sets in series to get 40v.
