* Translation of the corner seal: "Once you've gotten the fish you can forget the trap" which is a line from the Taolist master Chuang Tzu. He said:
"The fish trap exists because of the fish. Once you've gotten the fish you can forget the trap. The rabbit snare exists because of the rabbit. Once you've gotten the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words exist because of meaning. Once you've gotten the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words so I can talk with him?"
My interpretation: getting the right painting brush is necessary to paint the fish, but it is more important to captured the happy spirit of the fish. If you've gotten what I am trying to say, forget about my poor English words. :-)
I carved this seal 25 years ago when I was a graduate student in Nanjing University.
* If you like it I can make a seal like it for you.

this was wonderful and thank you for the words of wisdom. I am always reading the Tao Te Ching or listening to it in the car. So much that the words have become the fish... ;-) I wonder could you do more videos in this style of painting, it is very inspiring. thanks, btw the silicone paper I got from your site is working beautifully for dry mounting

Thank you for sharing your artwork with us across the world. I love KOI and paint 9 all the time. Is there a idea that painting one fish black gathers the negative out of life? The open, light that is in your painted fish is lovely.

This is wonderful and I totally want to try it out. out of curiosity; could you put a bit of blue wash on the back, like you did on the butterflies in the iris video to make the rest of the paper look like water? Also, what does the stamp mean?

+jasmine roxanne raggs Yes, in Chinese painting colors I'd use mineral colors such as vermilion and cinnabar which are opaque.

The gelatin-based sumi ink on rice paper should not bleed when re-wet, whereas gum arabia based watercolor might bleed when re-wet.

Yes, you can but they tend to bleed when wet-mounted. Use dry mounting to avoid bleeding.
