*Fun Fact:* Nate Stevenson explained that the story's setting of a high-tech, futuristic world combined with a medieval-style atmosphere is meant to symbolize how although the world has evolved so much, issues that have plagued people throughout human history such as discrimination and prejudice remain ever-existent.

Also the fact that antiquated ideas will never fully die and ppl will stubbornly stick to the past when it comes to morality instead of changing with the times. Technology may advance, and they’ll accept it happily cuz it makes their lives easier, but they refuse to change themselves and how they see the world.

the fact that baby Gloreth looked scared with her sword after her parents indoctrinated the fear into her but the director looked in pure hate when she shot at nimona is so accurate in how the indoctrination process is at first genuine fear that grows into illogical hate

An issue with that is... the kid could be reasonably fearful of the giant dragon even after it became a kid with no indoctrination... 😅 I mean, Nimona being different from everybody else made her life difficult from the beginning, 1000 years ago animals avoided her and villagers were scared of her even thinking the entire Gloreth's cult was not a thing still.

Fun thing I noticed (and other people probably noticed, I just haven’t seen anyone talk about it)- Nimona’s last form was a phoenix and phoenix’s are known for rising from the ashes. At the end of the story Nimona comes back, they rise from the ashes. This could a metaphor for how people in the LGBTQIA+ community can be pushed down and hurt but we will always come back up bigger and stronger! She said to me the other day that she thought only boys married girls. Using her terms; I've explained to her that not only do boys marry girls, but boys can marry boys and girls can marry girls; its all perfectly natural and that its only parts of society and religion that have a problem with it. p.s. man in my 50s and had tears in the eye with the nimona and the statue scene, very moving.

But I wasn’t one of those ppl whos fav is spiderman, but spiderverse become my fav movie in an instant. Granted the first one, animation doesn’t seem sooo revolutionary now(but atill amazing), bc in 5 years all the other animated projects caught up with it (or maby bc I saw it a bilion times). But now the others caught up, the new spiderverse knocked it out of the park completly, and animation industry will be taking inspiration from it for years. Ofc those are also really great writen and emotional movies, not just amazing animation ❤️ especially with the second one having a trans (coded?) character (I don’t think they are coded, I think they are simply trans xd) I really wish Morgan would react to it 😄❤️

It’s just all those things at once xd She doesn’t say she’s trans on screen. but does she have to spell it out? Nimona is a trans metaphor, if she additionally had a trans flag in her bedroom? 🤷‍♀️

It's interesting to me how they played with Nimona's origins when adapting this from the graphic novel. The graphic novel had her as originally being a child who was handed off to the Institute when she developed powers, disowned by her parents as a changeling, and experimented on until she escaped one day. The changeling myth is theorized to have been developed as an excuse for parents whose kids aren't "normal," whether that be queer, neurodivergent, or anything else. Considering being part of LGBTQ+ used to be seen as a mental illness, her being given to the Institute is a clear parallel. Meanwhile, Nimona in the movie just started as a being in nature, a little different from the rest, but looking for acceptance like everyone else. She goes through a lot of suffering as well, but the key takeaway in this version is that she's a natural part of the world. Side not, sorry if she/her pronouns bug anyone in this. Given that Nimona spends most of the film in female forms, I'm working on the assumption that she/they is probably accurate. Frequently comfortable female, but absolutely not locked into it

I just can't believe we got this good of representation in mainstream media, and i feel so incredibly seen by it

I watched this with my kids, it's their favorite movie now they've seen it over and over. I knew going in it was a trans allegory which is why I believe it's so important my kids watch it and understand it. Everyone in our family is cis and straigjt as far as i know but I believe it's important that they understand empathy and the need for human beings to be happy so they can't grow up to big bigoted conservative scum bags. Even at their young ages they understand now from this movie that people are different and diverse and deserve to be who they are. My dream is that my kids will be among friend groups when they are teenagers or adults and someone they know might say something bigoted, and my kids will stand up and speak out. If I fail in other ways as a parent at least I will have succeeded in this way.

Couple things. 99% of the damage to the city was caused by the knights, just like the fire. It’s not just that they’re provoking Nimona and making her fight back(which they barely even do), but they are literally destroying themselves because of their irrational fear. Second, the director has such a huge power complex. In quoting Gloreth, she is literally trying to play God. She’s not just narcissistic, she is completely delusional. You could draw certain parallels to some people in the real world you may or may not have heard of. Last, on a lighter note, Nimona’s fire breath in the credits is a full progress flag, which is wonderful.

I was onto the director when we saw her visiting our protagonist in jail. She felt comfortable enough to twist the knife in for him even though she was not supposed to be familiar with the weapon used to kill the Queen (He could have had the same weapon on him hidden inside other objects). That was an instant red flag for me.

This is a great reaction to an amazing masterpiece of a movie, so thought I'd make sure to leave a few timestamps for some of my favorite reaction moments. :P Morgan at 3:20- Oh, they're friends? Morgan at 3:37- *breaks because of happiness* Morgan at 5:18- I feel like something bad's about to happens. Morgan at 5:55- Wtf is that!? Morgan at 9:12- I love Nimona! Nimona: If you don't, then you'll die in this closet! *Sarcastic tone* Yeah, that line didn't strike me in an emotional way at all. Morgan at 12:52- I'm getting a lot of queer vibes. Nimona is my shapeshifting icon/role model and I love everything about her(going with she/her as Nate has previously stated she/her are accurate pronouns for the character). I absolutely LOVE the fact that they took the time to make Nimona's storytelling so artistic and creative, just for her to end it by calling him out for being uptight and asking closed minded questions. Thanks to you, I now want pentagram highlights in my eyes! lol I really love the change you see in Ballister when he goes from "why can't you just be normal?" to "what does it feel like to shapeshift? Does it...hurt?" There's legitimate concern in his question along with the curiosity. It's no longer him trying to get her to do what he wants, but him wanting to better understand her. I also really, really love the description of the way it feels to her. The whole "you know that feeling right before you sneeze?" and the following explanation is just...beautiful. Because, pretty much everyone can understand that feeling! Morgan at 25:22- They've got PROOF mothafucka~! Nimona: "Little kids. They grow up believing they can be a hero by driving a sword into anything different. And I'M the monster?" Ugh, STILL this hurts my soul every time I hear it! Nimona: "I don't know what's scarier. The fact that everyone wants to run a sword through my heart. Or that sometimes, I want to let them." Seriously, this whole scene is probably the thing that hits me the absolute hardest throughout the movie(Plus the big scene at the end of course). So relatable to so many people. It really does make me cry every time. Morgan at 28:13- How are we not even at the half way point of the movie? I feel like I've been through the five stages of grief already. Morgan at 30:36- *shocked Pikachu face* The flashback of a shapeshifter literally turning into the exact thing as everyone else, literally forming themself to fit into society, and still not being accepted by anyone...it really hurts. Morgan at 38:46- Oh, the statue holding the sword will remind her of what happened, and that won't be good for anyone I think. Morgan at 39:24- No! No! NO! (Literally my same reaction, with tears, the first time I watched this and every time after) Morgan at 43:17- You MOTHERFUCKERS! Great reactions! Sorry for such a long comment, but this was fun to me. :P

I didn't buy that _for a second!_ She was being passive-aggressively upset about Ballister's question,so it was *clear* she wasn't about to give him an honest answer...yet. P.S. About the lights in animals eyes, basically it’s a reflective membrane in the back of the eyes that helps with night vision. I don’t remember the exact mechanics but my understanding is that it reflects a little bit of light from their surroundings and acts kind of like a mini flashlight. I believe it’s mostly nocturnal animals that have them since diurnal animals have little need for them

On the topic of shows and walls, perhaps you were thinking of Hilda? The walls of Trollsberg were a pretty big recurring theme in it, and while people do venture beyond the wall, it rapidly became more and more dangerous. Until it wasn't. Also, I don't want to put words to your feelings, but from what I saw... those were tears of joy at seeing someone who understands. We oftentimes neglect how important it is to be understood; to be heard. The Owl House played with that concept, but Nimona leans hard into it, specifically for LBGTQ+ representation. I also love how Bal, a queer man with a loving and healthy relationship is just as small-minded as everyone else at first; it shows that just because you're a part of a community instantly means you know everything. And yes. Nimona is a masterpiece.

I can count on on my fingers (probably on one hand) the number of movies/shows/etc. that have repeatedly made me cry not only every time I watch them, but also every time I watch someone react to them. Nimona is on that short list. I always tear up when Nimona's shadow form screams in front of the statue of Gloreth right before Ballister shows up. Every goddamn time. Every reaction video. Every re-watch (there have been several already). Even a short clip of just that scene will get me. I can't even describe how good this movie is, that even after so many re-watches and reactions that I've honestly lost count, it can still make me feel the same way every time.

In the intro, the "you can never let your guard down" is more of a comment on society. The idea of being ever vigilant, always on defensive, is very common in totalitarianism and fascism. "Monsters are everywhere, trust the system/government. We will protect you." Even if they have to fabricate the monsters, or label marginalized communities as monsters. Love and peace! 💚💛🌈

such an amazing and impactful movie that came out at the perfect time. so much to appreciate about it. one of the things i loved the most about it, though, is how it showed that children are not inherently judgmental or cruel to those who are different, it's something that adults and society teaches them, and it's something that can be unlearned. There’s a detail I don’t see people talk about much. When Nimona is in her kaiju form and about to impale herself on the statue she screams. But it’s not the giant beast noises she’s been making up until this point. Right when she’s about to end it all she screams and it comes out in her voice. It’s just a reminder that she hasn’t lost control or been overtaken by her monstrous side or something. She’s still Nimona and she’s still a person who is hurting. I’ve seen this like half a dozen times and that still brings a tear to my eye.

Regarding the shines on the pupils, Ballister and Ambrosius both have diamonds as shines at first as to symbolize their loyalty as knights, but then Bal’s shines turn to squares when he starts to defy the Institute and Ambrosius’s shines turn to upside-down triangles whenever he’s with Ballister, especially in moments where he has to decide between his loyalty to Bal or to the Institute. They occasionally alternate between the shapes depending on the situation. It is also important to note that Nimona doesn’t have a “main form”. Her human form isn’t even her main one, it’s just one of the many forms she choses to have. All forms are her, all forms are Nimona.

This might be the first time that the whole Skittle Squad has reacted to one thing all pretty much at the same time. The Owl House, Helluva Boss, Arcane, Gravity Falls, and She-Ra, etc. were all viewed on different timetables between you; but Nimona is I think the first thing that Bill, Elijah, Mosco, and you all watched around the same time. I think that's pretty cool. Also, it does not matter that you're not a fan of superheroes, because if you are at all a fan of animation, you need to watch Spider-Verse. It changed the animation industry and directly inspired the style of countless movies and Arcane. But it's also just one of the best movies ever, and you're gonna want to check out the first two before you miss the chance to at least see Beyond the Spider-Verse in theaters. If not for the story, then at least for the insanely beautiful, once in a lifetime visual experience.

And it also probably represents how Nimona is immortal and not actually gone. The symbolism in this movie is amazing

The Spiderverse movies are really good. I can understand not being interested if you're not into superheroes in general, but the character writing is phenomenal and will appeal to anyone regardless of their connection with superhero "genre." I definitely recommend watching it, but you don't have to. It did heavily change the animation scene, though, so if you're a big fan of animation, it's worth watching from the artistic standpoint alone.
