Nimes, France

travel videos & photos at: townsofeurope.com/ with text, maps & links.
The city of Nimes makes a very attractive place to visit with its quiet pedestrian lanes running through the center, and especially because of the three major Roman historic sites. There is an ancient temple, there is a large amphitheater, nearby is the famous aqueduct, Pont du Gard. Nimes is located in the south of France. Quite nearby are the cities of Arles and Avignon and just further east, you've got Aix and Marseille.

We are arriving in Nîmes this morning by train from Avignon and will be taking you on a walking tour of the city.
Upon arrival in Nimes train station and walk a few blocks along the main busy street, Avenue Feucheres, to a shady park, and just beyond to the star attraction of town and the world’s best-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater, the most important structure in town. It forms an ellipse, 145 yards long and 115 yards wide, and it’s 70 feet high. Although it's smaller than the amphitheater in Rome, the great Coliseum or even the amphitheater in Arles, it's actually in better preservation than any of them. The arena is built of limestone blocks that are as large as 10 feet wide, perfectly adjusted without any mortar to hold it together, in that ancient Roman style. The exterior presents two stories each of sixty arches.
This two thousand-year-old city has developed in a typically European-style with narrow lanes for pedestrians meandering in a casual grid that makes a delightful place to walk. It's an extensive zone of shops and cafés extending north of the arena, with the main lane of Rue de l’Aspic running ten blocks through its center.
While the historic sites are attractive you'll also find the shopping zone very enjoyable, just meandering and people-watching.

Ah, fair Nimes. As soon as I stepped out the station up that gorgeous wee alley between Ave. Feucheres, leading up to Les Arenes, I knew I was in a spot to savour. It was July. The cicadas were providing that quintessential Midi soundtrack with their crazy buzzing, the buildings has that faded grandeur/shabby-chic look that France does like no other country on Earth (save Italy), and the general vibe was one of satisfied torpor in the summer sun. Sure, there’s not much to the place. To call it France’s Rome is to grossly insult the scale and richness of the Eternal City, but what there is, including, of course, the superbly preserved aforementioned Les Arenes and Maison Carree, is worth a day of anyone’s life.

It wasn't an alligator but a Nile crocodile which was a sort of Coat of Arms awarded to the city to honor the Legionaries who retired to Nimes.

Correction: they are crocodiles not alligators ! The symbol of Roman conquest of Egypt, and the crocodiles of the Nile. Nimes is very beautiful. Found a superb bistro at the rear of the amphitheatre, with its slow cooked lamp in red wine and silver skinned button onions. The main street north of the railway station has beautiful fountains cascading, and I love the yellow sandstone buildings that remind me of Stamford and Bath.

I love the video you made of Nimes. I come from a small town outside of Nimes. Have you been to Uzes? It's my hometown. As a kid I used to go to Nimes once a month with my family. It was a big trip for us then. From time to time I go back but I kive in Ireland now. I miss my city so much.

Good video. It was nice to see more of the city than the presenter, like so many travel shows do... Shame you didn't show the 'water park' on the canal in more detail, I loved that when I was there 20 years ago... Lots of info in a relatively short time, thanks!

Thanks for noticing my low profile. I generally keep the scenery in the shot, not myself, unlike others, who are on big ego trips. I sometimes pop in briefly so you know who is talking, then get out of your way.

You know what my husband is from near Nimes. We live in Ireland we have popped into Nimes centre and ran around for a few essentials passing by many of these sites. We took the time to visit the Arenes and had the tour but never seen any of the other sites. I appreciate all your little points of information about the architects of note, and the tram that can function as a bus etc. I have been on that mode of transport and didn't realise. Great Job. Although I was a bit concerned at the few bystanders that gave you dirty looks when filming. They mustn't be used to tourists visiting in November!

Hey ! Actually, Dennis is quite right : we say "Nim" (we don't pronounce the final e and s, because they are silent. It would have been différent if there had been an accent on the "e", like in "Uzès"). Fun fact : Nimes was the city in the XIX° century where a famous fabric was made : la toile de Nimes, then exported to the US where it was used for making the… jeans (hence the English name : Denim, aka "De Nimes") 😉 Greetings from France !
