Safety Third is a weekly show hosted by William Osman, NileRed, The Backyard Scientist, Allen Pan, and a couple other KZread "Scientists". Sometimes we have guests, sometimes it's just us, but always: safety is our number three priority.

I got into a bad accident earlier this year. This dude t-boned me doing 103. I very very nearly died. Had a dissected aorta, my spleen was destroyed, my lung collapsed, my hip broke in three places. The sheer fear I have of driving now is immeasurable. Such is the life here in FL. Insane driving daily everywhere.
Literally came to youtube from spotify to say this but THANK YOU FOR BRINGING UP FOLLOWING DISTANCES. I know 3 friends who don't know the importance of a safe following distance. "I have good breaks" "I pay attention" "I have a fast reaction time" are ALL translated from a future tense of "I rear ended a person and had to replace my bumper" Your reaction time is between. 0.15 and 0.3 seconds. Reaction time....if a car is stopping. You can BEGIN your reaction a half second after they acted. With a half second late on acting, you STILL need to stop before their rear bumper AS WELL AS slow sooner than their brakes. And I didn't even mention I'd something rolls under the car in front. If it's debris at a dead stop you have 2 seconds to see it, recodnise it, consider your actions, check around your vehicle, avoid the debris, and recover from a swerve without leaving your lane. On average 0.4 seconds per step....under a stressful situation. That's asking perfect reaction time and preparedness 24/7 without a chance of human error....in a complacent human. Follow by 3-5 seconds. Follow so you, AND THE PERSON BEHIND YOU can recodnise dangers and act appropriately. It's cost me 0$...my friends have paid 10 grand total for their half hour of accumulated saved time.....jk it was 10 grand and 12 hours wasted on the side of the road waiting for police. Yet when I go slow and "drive like old people fuck" in the right lane I'm the bad guy. Also the whole "going faster causes less accidents" is my FAVORITE fallacy. Safety doesn't kill malfeasance does. When honda came to the USA with its groundbreaking safety and survivability, the percentage of deadly crashes increased....so did the speed. Drivers felt safer, did more dangerous things, and died because of their actions. Going slow in the left lane in itself doesn't cause crashes, idiots trying to speed around them in the right side do. (Though if you block traffic in the left lane you're still a cunt who's existence creates more crashes) But Speeding cars in general just add more energy to crashes as well. There's a direct correlation between energy released in vehicle collisions and survivability. Speeding is only safer fir the selfish asshole doing so.

Just tell them to look up visual saccades and tell them to look in a mirror at each eye and switch which eye you are looking at. Your visual cortex literally edits out fast moving things it finds irrelevant. Then ask them what will happen if they are looking at the radio dial and someone goes from 80 to 53 in 7/8ths of a second when you are only 7 ft behind them. When people say 'I didn't even see...' human reaction time sucks, and if you have the best in the world you are just the best sucky human.
William: "I don't get in other people's way, and I don't have accidents or close calls" also William: "I have been in 3 accidents total, 2 involving other vehicles, both my fault"

I can't believe Allen and Will don't recognize the Nigellionaire grindset.
if you're filling up your car with the engine running, at least on a somewhat modern car, you can get a check engine light or the engine can even start to stumble or misfire due to how the evaporative emissions systems work on modern cars. That's why a worn out, leaking, or cheaply made aftermarket oem replacement gas cap can cause a check engine light as well. Your car knows if you fill up without shutting it off. And it judges you for it.
i thought the title meant girls thst were simps for nigel and i got worried my position would be taken from me

Yes frame studios will frame anything you want, usually. Frequently they see things much more disturbing than you can imagine.
The scale of aware and unaware drivers may actually be trimodal, Aware, unaware, and Nigel
I just don't get why people think saving seconds is worth anything at all while driving, even if you get to where you're going, seconds aren't going to make a difference, and the increased risk is just insane to accept in order to save seconds.
The old timers where I work actually used to use the phrase "that makes as much sense as tits on a snake"
It's great watching Nigel figuring out the theory behind defensive driving
Nigel's take on drivers is pretty much spot on IMO. You're either a bad driver or you're just trying to slalom between all the bad drivers from point A to B.

I once almost caused an accident because I was wearing snow boots and tried to press the break but my boot was so large because of my foot size that after pressing a little bit my boot was on both pedals, and the breaks were not activated enough to prevent accelerating. i think a lot of the misconceptions when it comes to chinese manufacturing have to do with people not actually understanding how it works. chinese companies make shit tons of stuff and if you just pay the premium for good QA/QC, you’ll get a good product. if you just buy whatever bulk crap you can find from some random factory, you’re going to have a bad time

"China has better manufacturing capabilities and resources." Well, yeah, decades of off-shoring almost ALL manufacturing in almost every industry will have that effect.

It's kind of weird to say this in an age when stick shifts are far less manufactured than automatics, and we even have one pedal driving with electrics, but I think there's a lot to be said for the mindfulness you have to drive stick. I honestly think having mostly driven in my stick shift has made me be a much more mindful driver simply because if I get distracted, I can't shift down or up or whatever. I don't know if this is true, but I remember some countries in Europe still required people to learn stick, even tho basically no stick shift cars were being manufactured anymore. But like, driving stick, you learn your rpms, shift points, etc., by touch and hearing, but you also start to pay more attention to things like the tires and breaking, because those are more involved with a stick. It's not just pushing break and pushing throttle.
@jhbailey929

I agree that driving a manual can force a driver to be more aware. My wife and I both learned on manuals. All of our avoidable accidents have been in automatics, now we both daily drive manuals. My ADHD mind wanders in an automatic, I get bored, accidents happen. Driving a manual is fun for me (usually) and I'm always thinking 5 seconds ahead, driving predictable. Now manuals are no longer an option in many cases because it won't play well with modern driver assists and CVTs do better on mileage tests.

So yes, people here do learn to drive manual, because they will most likely only ever drive manual cars, as they are the standard here, so they are very much still being produced. There might also be other european countries where what you said applies, but I don't know the specifics of every countries car industry

I'm in Oregon and I don't think there's any law against pumping your own gas. I see people do it often, especially if a gas station is particularly busy, but there are also a few places that will just trust you to do it yourself. They typically have someone available to pump the gas, but you can just tell them you got it and they understand. The more commercial gas stations around here are a bit more adamant on having the attendance pump the gas, but I've never seen an attendant stop someone from pumping it themselves, even at these commercial gas stations. It's like a choose your own adventure book for gasoline.

@@westie430 I've never seen an attendant prevent someone from pumping their own gas, but I live in an incredibly rural county so things aren't the same here as they are in the cities and whatnot. I'm also on the coast, so if your experience in Oregon is from the godawful East then I can't really comment much on that. It's also different in the metropolitan areas around places like Eugene, Portland, Roseburg, etc.
@59:00 When they fill propane tanks, they open a valve on the tank they are filling. This is how they tell when it is full. You never fill a tank more than 80% so there is room for expansion if it heats up. The valve is at the 80% mark assuming it's on a level surface. Once liquid, rather than vapor propane comes out, you stop. They are supposed to shut the out-going valve everything is connected to so pilots go out before filling. Also, if there is an on demand water heater, there is a chance that there is a spark ignitor that could start if someone tried using the hot water while the propane is being filled. So no one should be in the rv while it's being filled.
Oregon and New Jersey both have employees at gas stations to fill your vehicle for you. I know in Oregon at least, that except under special circumstance you aren't allowed to fill your tank yourself. This becomes interesting when we Oregonians go to another state and have forgotten how it works.

51:00 The funny thing is I took drivers ed a few years ago and they actually teach you NOT to do it hand over hand nowadays. Push-pull steering is the standard drivers ed steering technique. It's also 8 and 4 now instead of 10 and 2.
In Oregon the pump attendants will usually fill you up with the vehicle running ESPECIALLY if it's a shitty car because sometimes it's so shitty that you can't get it started again so once it's running you just don't shut it off.
every time i get on the road i actively prevent like 2 accidents that i was un aware would have occured
I have gotten gas while the car was running exactly one time, the battery was shot and I had to get a jump to get the car going in the first place and was worried if I turned it off it wouldn't start up again.
allen should have 100% pushed his mythbusters merch!!!
Ima be honest, I've listened to each episode over twice now and this is the first time watching it on KZread and not Spotify

So I was a young new driver and I had to get to an apointment over an hour away, this was the 90's so I had a paper map and thats it. there was multipul detures from contruction. I get the the place and I am hauling ass when I see there is a temporary dirt side road leading to the driveway to the place. being young.... I cranked the wheel, the car (a 1978 pontiac catalina) went into a slide. the back end hit a wooden telephone pole which changed the slide and sent my car into the fence of the place I was going. the chainlink lifted up over the car and pinned it down. I walked the driveway and explained I had crashed into their fence, and that I was there because I had an apointment for, drum roll please.... Drivers Education. they thought it was the funniest shit ever.

@@westie430 yeah it was one of those times where you start to wonder if you are in a movie or something. I also got lost on the way home, ended up having to beg for cash and use a payphone to call my parents. My Dad knew the exact turn that I messed up on the way home and luckily thought the cash was pretty funny too. I drove that car for a couple more years with the back bumper held up with wire. eventually added duct tape racing stripes and a wrestiling trophy as a hood ornament.

Custom framer here- I have had to frame some...things in the past, but i can tell you that most people can get things custom ordered now. I do now have an idea to offer discrete framing for anime conventions now
All the Safety Third ads this episode convinced me to get 4 sticker packs & a pin.
I've had one multiple vehicle collision, and it was a head-on that was my fault because my entire brake system failed which caused me to lose control. The result has been that my trust in repair shops have been destroyed because the brakes had been recently fixed.
I always keep away from smashed/crashed cars because if it happend once, it will happen again, but not with me
lots of engineers have anecdotes about their experience with chinese suppliers and if it were up to them theyd rather buy stuff from here and pay extra than having to deal with that but usually the company makes the decision so you make do
This is NOT chemistry 😂
i know a lot of people who've always filled up while the engine was running. i really dont see the issue other than over caution. Unless you are having gasoline fights with a car that backfires there really isnt any way for anything to happen. gas fumes really dont escape the gas port much, you can smell extremely small amounts, plus it rises away from the car. If you are really worried about the car leaking gas somewhere then what difference does it make when filling, vs driving away? The main reason people do it where i live in the midwest is because it gets fucking cold. When you've only just started your car and got to the gas station in the morning, you want that heater running while you stand outside. Also a lot of older vehicles are a pain to get started and the last thing you want is for the cold to kill your battery while youre pumping gas.
Can’t stop watching this podcast
I think turning off your car to refuel is more important when you're talking about older vehicles, where static electricity could start a fire. From what I've heard modern cars often have grounded fuel fill ports and grounded gas nozzles at the pump. So it would be very rare to start a fire by filling with your car running. But there are laws that say you cant leave your car while idling as well and this may have more to do with those laws.

I mean most handles for the nozzles are rubber so if it was you that was static, even turning of the car won't help. (My apartment is filled with static in the winter, I have to discharge myself whenever I get up)
Used to ride a kickstart motorcycle that hated hot starts Never shut it off when refueling
Def already put these stickers on my work trucks. I'm a plumber so the "open hole" on the excavator truck is perfect
Nigel is soo right about his car theories
I had a car once that had a small tear in the tube that went from the fueling access to the actual gas tank. I leaked small amounts of fuel at the gas station every time I fueled. So yeah, definetly possible for there to be spilled fuel at a gas station.
Lane changes often make traffic way worse when it is already slow. Pain in the ass
I guess I can’t say for certain that there are no rogue pilot lights or hot gasses because I don’t know that much about my car, but I fill up with the engine running just about every time. That said, after hearing the concern in your explanation, I will probably stop doing that
I've lived in Florida for 30 years, and I've seen 1 person pump gas while the car was running. I was with my buddy while I was in highschool. I, very stoned, thought I was going to die a painful, firey death. Full on panic for like 3 minutes, and nothing happened we were just fine. Apparently it is a thing people do.

it's really not a big deal to do. you're more likely to create a spark after getting into/out of your car because of the static build up.

Vapors aren't contained from the nozzle going into the neck of the fuel tank.. you can see it evaporating while you pump. You are outside tho so it dissapates pretty quickly. It's a non-zero % chance you kill yourself and anyone around you.....

I would say that it's perfectly safe to fuel up with the car on if you are getting diesel, I would do it with gasoline but i don't recommend it. (Disclaimer: When you take advise check the source, this is a comment on a podcast that is called safety third)
