Nikon Z9 - No Mechanical Shutter?!? The Future Is Here!

Ғылым және технология

Today Nikon announced its first Flagship mirrorless camera - the Nikon Z9. This camera is very significant in that has a new 45.7 megapixel, stacked CMOS sensor designed by Nikon, an incredibly powerful EXPEED 7 processor and most notably no mechanical shutter. This is a fast and powerful camera. It supports shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 of a second, shoots 20 fps JPEG + RAW, 30 fps JPEG and 50fps JPEG at 11 megapixels. Video is powerful too as it will record 8k up to 30p for over 2 hours. 4k is supported up to 120p.
Price is $5499.99
Also announced is a new adapter with a physical redesign (in development), a new 100-400mm S f/4.5-5.6, a 24-120mm S f/4, and a development announcement for a 400mm f/2.8 S telephoto lens.

Another mentor of mine, who's a professional sports photographer also mentioned that while these are pricey buys, you can still sell it for at least 80% of the value 2 years down the road if you keep it in decent condition. Which makes it more of an up-front purchase. Look at D5's that are still selling for $3000. Understanding that makes it feel a little bit better spending that money.

I have to admit that for a very long time this is the first time in photography I honestly think this will indeed change the way people will shoot professionally. No mechanical shutter is so radically different that I'm really really impressed by what Nikon has come up with. Now lets hope all those specs and functions will actually work. @MP Because nobody else has had the confidence to remove the backup mechanical shutter, for one. And, if you look very closely, all of the others still have "some" rolling shutter. I have shot the Sony A7III and the A9 and they show slight hints of it at very high speed action. I have not shot the A1, but I want to say I still have seen some in the reviews I have watched (?). I could be wrong about that. Here, all performance HAS to be with the electronic shutter. The rolling shutter on the Sigma is why most people are not even aware they made this model. Also, I wonder if you admonished people from oohing and aching over the A1 and the R3? Both significant cameras in their own right. Sorry for the ramble...

It's been a long wait, but I am truly happy to have stuck with Nikon through the mirrorless innovation. I currently shoot with a D850 and Z6 - this will be a quantum improvement. I am already very pleased with the portrait and landscape shooting on those cameras but I simply cannot get great results with fast moving subjects as in sport, rodeo, and wildlife photography. This will open those doors for me while also making portrait and wedding photography bullet proof. Finally - a "last camera I'll ever need" option (until VR takes over).

Wow - I've seen a lot of discussion on this camera and you did a great job of describing the practical benefits of these new features and technologies. One minor correction - the frame rates you mentioned were not exactly right. There are three different sizes and compression levels for RAW. The 20 fps is for full size full raw - and it writes the files to a fast card and clears the buffer at 15+ fps. The 30 fps is with a smaller file size version of RAW. The peak speed is 120 fps for 11 megapixel JPEG images. Finally - it's very important to have a fast card to support the fast speed. The Delkin Black and ProGrade Digital Cobalt are currently the only really fast cards, but more options and even faster cards will be available in the future.

The Z9 looks like an amazing camera and Nikon deserves a lot of praise for such a well thought out approach and state-of-the-art tech. I'm struggling to understand how the lack of a physical shutter is actually a step above the Sony A1? Yes, the Sony includes a mechanical shutter but its electronic shutter works the same way the Z9 does . . . only you *can* shoot a 1/400 sync speed if you need it. Not trying to fanboy, genuinely curious what I'm missing.

I stopped using the mechanical shutter at all a few years into using an A9. I realize that a few photographers still feel that they benefit from using the mechanical shutter on, say, the A1. However, for the majority of high-end camera users, you need to show that the Z9 is a lot more powerful than the A1 when the A1 is using its electronic shutter. I am ecstatic that Nikon has finally jumped onto the stacked-sensor bandwagon. Sony got everyone excited with their A9. They upgraded it slightly I guess for the A1, but so far don't seem to have developed it much beyond making it cheaper to manufacture. Nikon's decision to design and make their own sensor means that we now have real competition in what is clearly the future for at least high-end action cameras. This also fits Nikon's continued interest in high-end scientific and industrial imaging. I would suggest that people listen to what Jared Polin has to say, based on extensive hands-on experience with a pre-production model.

I agree. However, I think this camera is targeted to a certain photographer. Like me who refused to jump to mirrorless until we had (1) a pro body and (2) we had a reliable Nikon focus system. I hardly think that Nikon was trying to turn others back to them who have changed. Instead it is intended for certain people. I ordered mine on release date along with FTZii because this module allows me to use all of my legendary F glass of old. Literally $30k plus in glass before mirrorless ever came out.

I'm a concert photographer (primarily) that's been using a Z6ii for the past year or so and a D750 and D5300 for a few years before that. I'm super excited about the possibilities of the (apparently) vastly improved auto focus mechanism in this Z9. However, I wonder about the possibilities of getting "banding" when shooting in low/variable artificial lighting as is often found in smaller-venue concerts. Am I detecting a bit of banding in the image of the running shown at roughly the 1:00 mark in this video? I first noticed what I'm thinking might be banding in the silhouette of the hills in the background. Maybe it's just the way KZread compresses/presents the images - maybe it's not really there at all. But I really would like to see a reviewer check out the camera's ability to properly handle darker scenes that are lit with LED/stage lighting.

Agreed with that... and I've seen tests where the AF wasn't as sticky as I expected it to be. Maybe it's a firmware thing, if not it's definitely not a game changer in that respect. I also don't like that there's no way of actually shooting uncompressed RAW at least at lower frame rates. All in all an impressive camera but actual tests of the final release will have to prove its glory... just my 2c

Thanks for the preview, Ted! With an electronic shutter, I'm wondering how well it'll perform in wedding venues like churches and reception halls, under different types of artificial lighting. Banding is a big problem with silent/electronic shooting on my Z6 and Z6_2 cams. If this cam is truly banding free, I'd love to see examples under those conditions. Everything else looks amazing!

Glad they’re catching up to Canon and Sony. 8k and the perfect solution to the tilting rear screen (portrait and landscape!) are the big takeaways for me. If you want to see a sample of how the camera handles, Morton Hilmer takes one to Svalbard (78° north) in freezing conditions. He seemed impressed.

As a fellow Texan, and a subscriber to your channel, I am going to go a bit off the grid here and ask you to indulge this thought. You are the only channel I could think of that I would even pose this question. Can we get someone to explain (could be you if you understand the science behind it) first 1. what is a stacked CMOS sensor (first launched by Sony if memory serves me in 2012), 2. Why it is useful in the Z9 (vs Z7 for example) and the Pros vs Cons of having such architecture. Then it would be terrific to have someone at Nikon minimally discuss how they have taken the "cons" into consideration and what (doesn't have to be technical) they've done about it. I know this is a stretch, but if anyone would have the interest in this pursuit, it would be you (and that's a good thing). Last thing "There aren't any moving parts, electronically anyway" did you mean "mechanically anyway"? and what would you consider the IBIS mechanism?

Now imagine a camera shooting 10 or 20 years straight without any kind of maintenance, since there is no shutter and they protect the sensor with a stronger barrier.

  • @alansach8437
    @alansach84372 жыл бұрын

Is there any feedback on the shutter at all? One thing I don't like about electronic shutter is the inability to take one or two shots. You just tap the shutter button and you've shot 10 or 15 frames! You don't always want 10 or 15 frames. The "clicks" of a mechanical shutter allow you to count frames. I find using electronic shutter, though it has its place, creates a ton of extra time in editing. Sometimes there is such a thing as too fast.
