Are you contemplating getting a Z8, I’d love to hear why?

Ralph, I’m not really a fan of unboxing videos but I really enjoyed yours. Thanks for the grand tour of the ZED 8 and for giving me a glimpse into how you’re going to shoot with it.

Pre ordered the Z8 on May 10 with local shop and used NPS priority, picked it up May 25. I decided to buy one because it is a great companion to the Z9 which I’ve owned for a year. I own a D850 and is still a great camera but prefer what I can do with the Z9. The Z8 being smaller is perfect for times when you need a smaller body but what to retain what the Z9 dose. Have done two functions with both and it’s a joy.

That’s exactly my thinking behind getting the Z8. Glad to know it’s a good call 🙏

I find holding a larger lens with one hand is less strain on the wrist with the Z9 as the body is in contact with your whole palm. With the Z8 you’re lacking the support of the lower part of your palm, so the torque pulling your hand to the left and forward is greater. Despite the weight, I find holding the Z9 a lot more comfortable with larger lenses because of this.

That’s very interesting. I find the weight of the Z9 after 15 minutes shooting holding both it and the big lens becomes very uncomfortable and more shake gets introduced. So far, I’ve found the larger z8 body to resist the torque experience larger lens give. Fascinating comment though, thanks :)

Would love a button / AF setup vid for the 8. I think I landed on my ideal approach but I’m always interested in seeing what others do. I also feel like I’ll be in Continuous AF much more now - wow it’s amazing.

Also looking to reduce weight shooting real estate with a D750 and Tamron 15-30mm combo - about 5 lbs!! Thanks also for your other review of the 14-30mm lens. Kind of surprised to see that changing modes on the Z8 requires two hands, one holding the button and the other turning the dial? Are there customizable U1 and U2 modes like on the D750?

There are customised buttons but they’re quite complex to set up and use. Definitely not straight forward like on EVERY other camera lol

Thanks John. Oooo that’s the encouragement I’m after. It’s so natural to say Zed. I always have to think about saying zee except when saying FTZ Adapter 🤷🏼‍♂️

i was comparing the WiFi spec for Australia, it looks like Z9 only has the 2.4Ghz radio but the Z8 has 2.4 and 5 Ghz. Could you check this? Thanks.

It’s my understanding that I’m this is correct. It’s been my experience that Nikon’s wifi connectivity to the app is possibly the worst in the whole world 😢

Ralph, how do you find the IBIS on the Z9/Z8 compared to your Z6?

Oh it’s good. I’d put it a ¼ better I reckon. The bigger body helps to keep the shake down as well.
