Phil!!! I was impressed but I think the R3 is a better option and pares with you 200-800 better than the R5. I was impressed but would not switch. What I am hoping for is a dual sensor on either the R5II or the R1 and hoping the R1 has a larger sensor as well. I do miss the larger R5 sensor and 8K video, but the photos I get with the R3 I think overall are better. The only think I can compare this set up to is the R3 (dual processors), and the 200-800 and it still comes in way cheaper and is more versatile. If you just want to shoot an 800 F11, that works amazing on the R3 as well. And then you have the R7 with the 100-400 - super inexpensive no other manufacturer can really touch that combo. Nikon has two expensive bodies with this firmware where as all the Sony and Canon bodies have the amazing tech built in. I would not direct anyone to Nikon, but they have come a long way. 🙏💖🤗

True in many ways, but photos are photos and video is video. All the bells whistles dont matter if the gear does not focus most of the time.. I only kept the combo for two months and sold them. Stick with R3 and RF800/5.6L since. Been happy with this Canon combo in most situations but do want more pixels. Gave Z9 another chance only because of Z600/6.3 PF. Was amazed by size, weight, sharpness and AF speed of the lens. Not convinced completely by the bokeh it produced and therefore upgraded to Z600/4 TC. I wish Canon would come up with telephoto primes specifically designed for mirrorless system. I felt being cheated spending over $17,000 USD on a so-called RF telephoto prime which is actually an EF400/2.8L coupled with an internal 2X converter and EF to RF adaptor.

Many photographers highly praise the Canon AF system so I have been looking forward to seeing the full spec's of R5ii and R1. At the same time, I wish Nikon will come up a better noise-handling sensor for high ISO range (from rumor mill Nikon may go with Tower Semiconductor sensor not Sony anymore). @@georgetran1766 and @jonnyPink65 - With regard to the higher ISO noise concerns, are you guys using Lightroom by chance? If so, then the noise you're seeing is from the way that Adobe handles Nikon files. The Adobe algorithm for NEF files is absolute crap. I experienced a lot of noise with my Z9 files (and D850 files) in Lightroom even at ISOs of around 400. When the same files were opened in Capture One or Nikon NX Studio editing software the noise was significantly reduced. i resolved the issue by changing the default RAW file profile in the LR preferences. In the Presets tab go to the Raw Defaults Global settings and if it's set to Adobe Default, change it to Camera Settings and you'll see a big difference. You'll have to reimport your files to see the change in any existing files in your catalog.

Nikon is catching up? Nikon is far and away the leader in the wildlife genre right now. They have easily the best pro level 400mm and 600mm primes. They have the best 800mm+ with the Z 800 f6.3 PF. They have the best semi-pro 400mm and 600mm primes. They have the best 100-400mm zoom, and the best ~200-600mm zoom. They have the best TC's. They have the best full body FX flagship, and the best half body FX flagship. Who exactly do you think they need to "catch up" to? Sony doesn't even have an 800mm or longer lens. Their TC's are easily the worse of the big three. 100-400mm...poopy. 200-600mm...dated, average VR, does not play well with TC's. Pro level 400mm and 600mm are where Nikon and Canon was 20 years ago. Sony is seriously behind in the native super tele category. The A1 and A9III is impressive, but there is simply not enough native glass super tele glass to support them and those bodies are held back because of it. They are laughably behind Nikon and Canon without third party options. What about Canon? Still no full body true FX flagship how many years since going mirrorless? Ongoing disaster movie franchise half body FX flagship which will only be underdone by the next sequel. Their pro 400mm and 600mm primes optical designs are mostly recycled mediocreness from EF mount versions. Quite heavy, poorly built, slightly better than Sony optics. Their pro 800mm (and 1200mm) optical design is also mostly recycled mediocreness from EF mount, quite heavy, even more poorly built, and is less sharp than the Z 800 PF which costs $10k less. The 600mm and 800mm f11 are quite impressive in how almost completely pointless they are. Canon does own that category, though, so let's give them credit. They own the f11 super tele prime category. The 100-500 is sharp, small and light, but f7.1 and mediocre at best with TC's. The 200-800 is a poop machine above 600mm. Horrifically bad VR, not sharp, slow/inaccurate AF, and a laundry list of other optical/performance oddities. The 100-400 is Sony level. So, what am I missing here? What exactly does Nikon need to do to "catch up" to Sony and Canon in the wildlife genre?

One thing about gear we use - cameras, bikes, tools .... everything. We are all protective in defending what we use. I started with Nikon and it broke my heart when I switched to the R5 - Nikon had nothing that could compete as far as AF or video specs. When I had my Z9, the focus was dismal (yes latest firmware a that time), and it just did not stack up to anything Canon had out. I rented this to see how far the firmware had progressed and I was impressed....... bot not impressed enough to buy another Nikon. Yes - they have now caught up as far as AF and eye AF, but Sony just released a global shutter - new tech but it will all get better. Again, I was impressed this time with the firmware, but for me - I still think Canon is more consistent overall. And one other thing.... I knocked the 800 F11 until I really shot it. For what it is, it is awesome. Most are not going to go out and drop$14K on a lens so that makes it possible for them to get reach. I think it is best on a full frame body, but I personally really like it. And you know.... as long as we go out and have fun, not matter what we shoot - that is the most important thing. My opinion, and although is is contrary to yours, they have caught up as far as focus goes. All the impressive specs, features and lenses mean nothing if the focus is not there. 🙏🤗💖
