Great that you still show your appreciation for the Z6ii even though you also use the Z9! For us that cannot afford the Z9 it gives a comfort. I use Z50 as my step inte mirrorless, coming from D500 and D4 which I still use sometimes. Even the Z50 has extremely good picture quality in good light and the autofocus is also good if you "help" it occasionally. My next camera will be a Z6ii for sure. I think Nikon will keep upgrading firmware in the older cameras so they improve gradually.

A very interesting review. As a general amateur photographer I am always interested in the comments people make about camera gear. I own the Nikon Z6ii and whilst I agree with you, to a degree, regarding the autofocus system, I would always put the quality of the image above autofocus. I also feel at times,as photographers, we rely too much on technology rather than photography technique. I frequently find it more satisfying getting a shot with much of the technology turned off, whilst retaining the quality of a modern sensor.

I'm in the thinking a missed shot is a missed shot and even though the Z6ii gives outstanding IQ, if the AF is out, you have missed the shot all together. I'd rather have an image with less IQ than none at all.

It's a step in the right direction, however, they desperately need the new processor in a Z6lll/Z7lll. First, one can't buy the Z9 even if they can afford it. @@Gazzab6 I don’t think that there will be a direct D500 APSC replacement because there is really nowhere to go with lenses, if you don’t intend on using long glass, and it’ll be a risk producing a high end APSC body that doesn’t sell. I think they’ll maybe produce a mini Z9 along the lines of a zD850 and ‘force’ teleconverters, given it might be easier to use them with ML AF.

I had no regrets 4 1/2 years ago when I had the opportunity to upgrade to the D850 early in its life cycle but, similarly, when I look back at some of my best images taken with that D750, I’m left with a smile on my face. Hey Josh, thanks for a fair assessment on the Z6ii - good not great would describe the AF system. The Nikon AF system has many variables, and setting the right combo of AF modes is essential. Many Z6 shooters are using the wrong modes for their subject type. Keeping the firmware up to date is also essential. Of course, fast forward a year later, Dec 31 2023 and the Z6iii is upon us soon with the AF performance of the Z8/9/f and the IQ of the 24mp sensor. Still, very happy as an owner of the Z6ii and Z7ii. Not all my subjects demand blazing fast AF. Happy New Year 2024!

I also want to add that my Z6 is now a totally different beast since the time I bought it because of the software updates that Nikon have kept pushing even after 2 years!! Another thing that is overlooked a lot is the build quality and ruggedness of these Z bodies. I have used mine in torrential rain in Thailand, temperatures as high as 47 degrees Celsius in my country to as low is negative 35 degrees in Finnish Lapland and my camera has never failed me!! This is a great review and perceptive about the aesthetic qualities of Nikon's images. I've owned the brand since their D200 (the only one I never had to "figure out" - for its time it just "worked") - I bought the Z6ii because functionally its not THAT different to what I'm used to. I don't shoot a lot of fast moving images other than my kids and half the time just use focus peaking. Sony is cleverer with its autofocus but with some nerve damage I just can't hold the camera. Their focussing issues seem like more of a software issue than anything else.......

A Z6 followed by a Z6ii along with most of Nikon's Z prime lenses. Yes, Nikon images are off the chain. That is what sold me on the Z system. It must depend on the shooter, I don't have any mayor focus issues. Thanks for posting your video.

I would have to agree with you Josh, I bought the original Z6 and loved it for anything but BIF, and any kind of action. It is a wonderful night sky camera as well. Coupled with the D500, I found the combination worked very well. I sold the Z6 camera, and bought a used Z7, thinking that the higher resolution would make an even better combo, but found that with astrophotography, the Z7 wasn't nearly as good as the Z6, and I ended up purchasing a Z6ii (Realistically I would have been just as happy with the Z6). Today I have the Z6ii and the new Z9 and find it to be a fantastic combination. Both cameras are very versatile, and while I love the AF, speed, and resolution of the Z9, I will still pick up my Z6ii as a walk about camera, and I still prefer it over the Z9 for night photography as well. The D500 is now gone, and I am packing up the Z7 this weekend to ship to MPB. For the first time since I made the transition to mirrorless I feel very satisfied with my kit, and will probably transition out the remaining F mount lenses over the coming year, completing my arduous, and expensive transition to the Z mount system.

Great balanced video as always. I have to agree with you, the sensor in the Z6ii is Nikon's best - like you said, when you nail the shot on that camera it's quite unique. But I can't agree with you on ergonomics, it's just too personal a factor. I shot Nikon for a decade and I moved to the Sony A1 in good parts because of Nikon's ergonomics. Sony lets me set-up the camera exactly how I want to shoot it, Nikon forces me to shoot it their way. I get it that Nikon's ergonomics are right for you but believe me when I say that I have been relieved to not have to fight my camera for the past year (and equally wish that Nikon's implementation of that 24mp sensor could be had with Sony's customization).

Totally agree with you on the sensor IQ. My best shots on my Z6ii are consistently better than my best shots from my D850. And I love my D850. Lately though, I’ve returned to my Z6ii for BIF and action and worked on improving my technique and dealing with the AF limitations. When I’m paying attention, get my settings right, give the AF time for the initial lock on and shoot short bursts, I’m getting much better results than early on. Still get a few maddening results but less so and, with better overall consistency, more tolerable. Still waiting on my “Z500” though. And the 400 2.8 TC.

As a fellow Z6II owner I agree with your thoughts on the camera. I am more than pleased with the video performance and the autofocus in video seems better than image to me. The detail you can get out the camera in both images and video is A+. But there is one this that just drives me bat-assed-crazy and that there is no way to lock the focus point to the center of the screen if you want to. I have missed more shots due to the focus point being bumped up or down into the corner than missed autofocus by a TON!!! The other A+ features that I use a lot are Focus Shift Shooting for macros (a macro photographers dream come true!!) and Focus Peaking, especially when you get used to manually focusing in video or trying to figure out just what really is the closest point on that darn bug when shooting Macro!!! The high ISO performance is truly amazing! Especially if you use Topaz DeNoise!!!!! I have spent hours sitting on the deck with an adult beverage practicing autofocus on birds at the feeder for both images and video and practice does make perfect! Great review!

Great vid again, Josh. I agree with most everything, but lean more to the Z7/Z7II/Z9. I've had the Z6 since it came out and use it mostly for video. It's a great camera. I just love high mpx sensors. I get what you're saying about the creamy quality and I still love the images I got with the D700, but I probably wouldn't go back... Since the D800e, I've been hooked. The D850 picked it up a big notch and now the Z9 is killing it. I started Nikon mirrorless with the V1 and loved it. Got the Z6 and Z7 when they came out and was hooked again. Love the Nikon image quality and look forward to seeing what they come up with for the Z8. A lightweight body with 100mpx and expeed (8) processing might be fun to play with... :)

I shoot canon but want to upgrade from my 6D with its dire focus system. I have to say I love the images that come out of the Nikon mirror less cameras. I’m torn as there is so much choice. Sony with its great lens selection, canon which feels homely to me, and Nikon which seems to have - as you said - buttery images. I think I’m going to hold all three in my hand and see which feels best as I honestly don’t think any choice will be bad given the tech in all these cameras but Nikon z6ii is standing out to me for the added bonus of good weather sealing - something the R6 lacks.

Have been using Nikon for 30yrs plus and now the Z7ii and Z6ii. Having used the D5 and D850 and D500 before changing to the Z series. I still use mostly F mount lenses. BIF is a major wildlife category for a lot of people but for me here in Africa, I shoot mostly big animals and the bigger slow moving birds. For me the Focus system is very good, fast and accurate. With BIF, the key is to find the most workable settings, and I agree it is not as fast as the Sony A9ii that I used with their 200-600, but it also missed shots and in a series would have soft images and sharp images. Fact is that Mirrorless leaves a lot more decision making to the camera and fact is they are not perfect. For me the benefit is that with the 500pf and the new Z lenses, it is very compact and lightweight and a joy to use on safari and traveling. Yes the Z9 and the 400 f2.8 with build in TC1.4 would be fantastic but the money and price tag is 5x more expensive. Hopefully with some firmware upgrades the Z7/6ii series will see some improvements in this department. But I agree, even the Fuji XT4 focus system offer more options. So Nikon has some work to do, but for now I am happy with the systems

Yes, the Z6_2 images are gorgeous, like more detailed D3 ones, the static auto-focus system is as good as any, I've been able to auto focus on Venus under the Moon, amazing. Where it falls down are the auto tracking abilities and choices. I use mine in those situations like DSLR, good old fashioned technique with single point and Dynamic modes. I wish the tracking systems were better but I think one needs the Expeed 7 models to get that. But, tracking apart, it's a marvelous image and video maker..

So on point Josh. I absolutely love the Z7II and the Z6II. The size, ergonomics, menus, and dial placement is terrific. Meanwhile, I am spending much of my time with a Sony because I need the reliability of autofocus. Nikon should drop everything they are doing and find a way to be the best autofocus company in the business. When they do that they will dominate the market because the images and raw files are simply AMAZING. To earn extra money to supply my photography addiction I have to do sports and video projects on the side and Nikon simply isn't reliable enough. Also, Instagram and other platforms are moving to more video content. The Sony A1 is probably the closest thing to achieving the perfect hybrid camera (with a comfortable mobile size) but the cost is high and I would take the images, color science and raw files of the Z cameras all day long over the Sony.. Keep up the good work.

Reason I stay with Nikon is the image quality.. Most people who use other brands will admit the files and IQ on Nikons are better.. they were post z9 only lacking in AF for sports and wildlife tracking.. I shoot weddings and portraits and have no issues with AF what so ever and have a higher hit rate with it than my d850 and d750.. The image quality, the noise control, the mirrorless functions... It is impossible to turn back to a DSLR, and I keep thinking that the AF system in the Nikon Z6 II is not that bad, just need more time to get used to it but once you get used is good enough to most photos, maybe not as reliable as Sony or Canon but... not that bad to make me move and change a complete system.

I don’t do birds in flight or sports so it’s good for me now, but hey, better is desirable. I needed glasses at age 9, contact lenses (hard type) at 16, bifocals (progressive) around 2000. As of last January, after cataract surgery, trifocal and Toric IOLs mean no eyeglasses, no orange tint. Looking through the viewfinder wearing glasses was doable, but awful. I agree with your points on the AF. The AF is accurate, as long as you're deal with subjects that are distinguishable and not moving very fast, or that are moving in a predictable pattern with little to no obstructions. It's the tracking of erratic subjects (such as in sports or wildlife) that is the biggest drawback, although the Z9 does seem to fill this gap quite well, but is also 2.5x the price of a Z6 II. Hopefully the upcoming Z8 will close the gap a little (although they are predicting it to be close to the Z9 in price, so hopefully Nikon does a Z6 III with some update technology to give the AF a good improvement and be more competitive to Sony and Canon). I think they can now that they've figured out the Expeed 7 and the stacked sensor design which I think will be the basis for all Z cameras (FF at least) moving forward.

Hey Josh, no doubts that Nikon delivers the best files in the business (at least for what it concerns 35mm FF). I shoot Nikon, and I have shot with Pentax, Canon and (alas) Sony. Sony lasted less than an hour I must say... as ergonomics are science fiction on that camera whilst on the Canon they're very good as well. Back on track. I bought a Z6 in 2020 and noticed immediately that I was focusing on Monday and it nailed the subject on Wednesday! With moving subjects, is like drilling holes in the water (as we say in Italy) - just can't do it. Period. So the Z6 went straight back to the shop where the shopkeeper commented "welcome to the club of returners, Nikon will be thrilled to know that". Now we have 2 processors on the 'new versions II' but with them we also have a huge obstacle: it's the Nikon Z9. Although I am convinced that we have been squeezing only half of the juice out of those 2 processors (mind you one is DEDICATED strictly to AF functions!), I am also convinced that Nikon won't be cannibalising the sale of their flagship mirrorless (Z9 that is) for some time. We'll have to probably wait until the Z6,7 (iii ) and possibly the Z8, to be released and then witness a technology trickledown from the Z9. Having said that Josh nailed it: when you get an image in focus - nothing compares. Nothing. (Errata Corrige - too many typos so I had to intervene!)

Perhaps take the Z6ii ride as a 'zen experience' and any nailed image is a bonus as, I still think, that the quality of the Z6ii and Z7ii his still higher (I'm referring to the sensor now, not all the frills that the Z9 comes with). Well for me the Autofocus capabilities or lack thereof for action and BIF is why I didn't jump to Nikon mirrorless when it first came out, not needing video for any business model it was not a driver for me to invest in the Nikon mirrorless market. I sat.....I waited .....finally the Z9 and while one can argue it's the least expensive camera for what it offers from the competitors which is true beyond a doubt it still took a lot of soul searching to drop the $5,500.00+ to finally go from being a 2x D850 user to sell one and the 200-500 zoom to enable the purchase of the Z9. The Z9 was the only body that convinced me now was the time to make the switch. I'm happy I did but still have friends who can't justify a Z9 purchase financially and jumped to Sony because they have a 200-600 Zoom right now, not down the road and the A7 IV has great AF for birds in flight vs the Z6/Z7 system that they were using, they think the build quality and ergonomics are better than the Sony but its all about not getting enough sharp images with the Z6/Z7 series. Nikon needs to come out with a $3,500.00 price point model that fixes this issue, the hardware limitations of the Z6/Z7 won't allow firmware updates to fix this problem.

I think people are becoming a bit jaded when it comes to autofocus. Today’s whiz-bang AF technology will be “obsolete” soon enough. Didn’t the D810 have an amazingly-advanced AF system not that long ago? My current bird-photography set up is a Nikon V2 paired with an adapted Sigma 100-400. If the birds are still, the AF is fine. If the birds move much, forget it. I have been looking at used D7200, D810, and Z6 bodies as potential bird-photography cameras that are within my budget. Any one of them would be an improvement over the V2. I found it interesting that you mentioned all three of these bodies in this video. They must have some merit, even if they don’t have the current state-of-the-art AF capabilities. Thanks for posting a video about a great “obsolete” camera. We need more of these.

Hi Josh. Love your channel. Thanks for all the hard work and time involved. I certainly appreciate your story telling approach. I am taking a trip in May and June to the “western” national parks. I live on the east coast. I have a Z9 pre-ordered but I’m not feeling confident it will arrive in time for my trip. Thinking about testing out a Z6 II. I currently shoot a D850 and D500 for wildlife, primarily birds. Have a 600/f4 and the 500 PF. I want to do some video while on my trip. Have heard the Z6 is better than the Z7 for video. Do you think I will be disappointed with the wildlife shots with the Z6 vs the Z7?

@@BayouJosh Yes, because I wear glasses myself (with similar [titanium] frame).... hehe. But I've been used to glasses since I was 4 years old. That's one reason why I switched to a mirrorless camera - you can judge the sharpness of the images much better on the display / evf than through the normal viewfinder.

The only thing I have to add is that this Z6 came out at the same time as the EOS R. And both were seen as being far behind the A7III, which changed things. The Z6 II was an incremental upgrade, just adding slightly more power and a second card slot. The Z6 III will obviously be much more in line with the rest.

So Josh, I own a D5600, and I'm planning to move to Full frame mirrorles on January, I've been watching videos about what camera would work for me, and I was pretty convinced that this was the right camera, i like to do bird photography and sometimes portraits, but now that I watch your video I'm having doubts, you think that I should go for the A7iii or A7iv? or the Z6ii is the right to go, I'm not a professional but is my full time hobby hehe. Blessings.

I had a D600. The sensor was wonderful. I realize the Z6 does not have the exact same sensor but I think I remember reading that the Z6 sensor is an evolution of the one from the D600. You are dead on about the creaminess of the colors. There is a glow in prints where subjects that are in focus just jump from the soft background. It is more than the lens. I used the same lenses on the D600, D500 and Z7. The cameras with the denser sensors just do not have the same magic. This was a great video as is becoming usual. Thanks for all your videos.

I have the z6II with 500PF for wildlife, and an Olympus em-5miii for casual photography and macro. The little em-5iii has a far more reliable AF system, in particularly it doesn't have the z issue of latching onto the background. I'm going to wait the year out to see what Nikon does but the new OM-1 is strongly tempering for me to go all in MFT.

Thought about the OM-1 also. Pro-capture, in camera focus stacking, light weight and lower cost all would be great. I just can't get past the poor high ISO performance. Most of my opportunities are in the early morning or evening light. I am also trying to improve subject seperation. Everything seems to point to full frame.

Hi Josh, have you tried shooting BIF with 12 bit when using Z6II? I watched Jasin Boland's video about Z6II and he said when shooting with 12 bit the whole camera and also auto focus speeds up greatly. Is there any truth to this?

  • @BayouJosh

That is a great question. Unfortunately, I know I have only shot in 12 bit raw because of the faster framerates and I know the AF is still less than desirable.

Thanks for the reply. I do have 200-500 and budget constraint. The weight of 200-500 is my concern, could 500 PF would make any difference to IQ, faster AF acquisition of fast moving subjects and weight in comparison to the 200-500. Bye the way I added 70-300 AF-P 4.5-5.6 in my arsenal to sit on my second Z6II for the mobility and seeking nearness to the subject( birds).
