Thanks Steve for the very detailed video about the Z 6 II. I have the Z6 and am thinking of buying the Z6 II as well. I think you highlighted the improvements of the Z6 II and went into great detail about the weaknesses. And since I am basically satisfied with the Z6 and you can also satisfy your requirements with the Z6 II, I think I will like the Z6 II too. Best regards from Germany. I hope that Nikon will bring a firmware update for a Bird Autofocus. The competitors show that it is possible.

Thanks for the very honest review! I’m a 74 year old amateur looking to upgrade from my crop sensor dslr. I do mostly travel and family photography. The fastest action I will shoot will be my grandson’s soccer games. I was wondering about the auto focus for that. I know the Sony and Canon do better in that area. But I don’t want to spend more than $2000. If this camera works for you, it should certainly fulfill my needs. Thanks!

Thanks Steve, I like your delivery, calm, no glitz, excessive advertising, or bias. Subscribed. I'm looking forward to your review on the Z7II specifically compared to the Z6II... I found the 6 was the obvious choice for me due to video advantages, but now (on paper), the 7II actually could be said to be as good or better, the continuous shooting buffer is bigger on both, and with the 7II you obviously have the luxury of cropping deeper. I don't expect you to compare video clarity, but I'm guessing if you were to take one camera out of the house on any given day, which of the two you might pick for photography, do the Z7II's extra af points help over the 6? :-) In short, it seems the Z7II has gained the most from twin processors... No pressure.. lol

Thanks for the thorough, real-world review! Very informative & practical info. Upgrading my Z6 as soon as I see the first sale on the Z6II - it's nowhere in sight anywhere currently (at least the body-only config). Undecided on the vertical grip, but no rush on that. 100% agreed on the battery door pop-open issue! Mostly when moving in/out of my bag. I thought I was the only one 😆 I have been tossing around the alternate option of keeping the Z6 and adding a D500 to my bag instead - I likely won't go that route, I'd prefer to stay committed to the Z system. I have some nice glass on both sides (including the 200-500).

Hey Steve, at first I wish a happy new year to you and your family! I'm very interested in the differences between the old Z6 and the new Z6II in regard to two situations where I consistently encountered problems: At first the camera often times prefers the background (let's say reed) in single point autofocus, even though the situation is very contrasty and enough light is available to focus on a big bird a few meters in front of the background. The second problem is photographing Birds in flight in direct sunlight - my Z6 often times is hunting extensively in different modes (Single Point, Group AF, Auto Area). I'm using my Z6 in Combination with A FTZ Adapter and my Nikkor 500 mm f/4 G ED VR. Did you encounter these problems with the Z6II? Many thanks in advance! I just love the content you produce, watching every single video 😊👍🏻 Keep up the great work!

Question: in photo mode I would like for example to have the speed mode parameters, 1/2000, f8, iso auto, wb 5000k, and in video mode I would like for example to have manual mode, 1/50, f11, iso 100, 5800k . Can I switch from photo to video mode (and vice versa) and have the right settings applied directly?

I would not make a big deal of the few times it fails, nothing is perfect in life (although I understand it can be frustrating) and Nikon is a lot younger in this mirrorless game and they are currently going at their pace and quickly catching up. Nikon really needs to prioritize focus and processor speed, like Fujifilm has done. Hey Steve, great video. Enjoyed it more than most out there. The use case for having subject tracking within Auto-area AF is to have 3 focus modes in 1. Say you're in Auto-area AF w/Face and Eye. 1) After analyzing the scene, camera will attempt to focus on largest/closest object in the frame. 2) If human faces and/or eyes are detected within a certain distance, it will prioritize those. 3) Hit Fn and bring up subject tracking to focus on static objects ala focus and recompose style or just things that don't fit the aforementioned description. So 90% of walkaround shooting is accomplished without having to change focus modes. However you do raise a good point - let us bring up subject tracking with Fn from within any mode at any time! Then hitting Fn again returns to the mode you were in. Let's add that to the wish list. Nikon, are you reading?

great point about buttons you can push with a gloved hand. as it is I tend to wear nitrile lined garden gloves when using my camera in winter as anything thicker makes buttons and switches hared to use. Smaller buttons than I am used to from Nikon DSLRs would make it very frustrating.

@@SteveMattheis Z6ii, FTZ, tc1.4 & 500mm PF focuses faster than D500, TC1.4 and 500 PF? What about image quality. My experience with the D500, TC1.4 and 500pf left me with better results cropping a photo taken without the TC. The reduced performance from the TC did not result in any gain. What everyone has to keep in mind when watching these YT videos and the comments that follow, is that some people will never be impressed enough or see enough improvement in something after they have reached a certain point of consumership in that product. They have already bought the camera they thought was all the camera they would ever need, and getting them to recognize that the next thing is better is just a waste of time. The Z6II is far better for wildlife stills and video shooting on the whole than the D850 and D500. You could have made some arguments with the Z6, but not really. Not all wildlife shooters care about second card slots, controls grips, and ridiculously deep buffers and fps above 10 or so. The Z6II now solves all of that, so its just not an argument anymore. Can you get great wildlife stills with the D850 and D500? Absolutely. Its better with a the Z6II, and video...forget about it. Its not even a discussion anymore. But some people will hold on forever trying to say their, for example, D500 is "legendary." Reality check, the D500 was and still is a huge flop for Nikon. Its a one trick pony, and honestly its not that great of a trick compared to everything else that came out around the same time and shortly after. I have well over 10k clicks on a various D500's I have rented over the years. Its not a camera worth owning. Since the Z6 came out, forget it. Not even worth renting anymore. The D850 is far better, but the video is just not there. Hopefully, Nikon will get out at least one higher end FF Z camera this year, and they can finally close the book on dead DSLR technology.

Hi Steve, excellent and to the point review. You are honest and right to "the point". I think your criticism of the flash media door opening easily was your issue, not the battery door at the bottom, underneath the camera. I have not experienced that issue yet on my Z6II, it could be a problem on that camera, but I will report if I find it on my Z6II. Your comments on the auto focusing system and how it worked is much appreciated, as well as your photos. Did you find the "auto area mode" the best to use for BIF? You pretty much gave us a good over-all report on many aspects of the camera. I'm curious how you'll compare it to the Z7II, other than the larger sensor. In conclusion, thank you for your review and I will be waiting to watch and learn more from you. Thank you very much. 😆 Happy & Healthy New Year 2021 ✨ 🌟

I've been using the tiny Z50 for a while now and taken it to Kenya and South Africa, but after looking around (and based on personal experience) I believe I need better low light performance in the dense jungle. I was considering upgrading to a Z6ii, but I'm a bit wary about the AF. As far as style goes, I like to believe I enjoy taking shots in a pretty similar way to you (based on the Bears and Wildlife sections of your website). Do you reckon the Z6ii will be able to keep up with slower moving animals (tigers (lets hope for plural), deer, bears etc.)? I'm not bothered about them standing or sitting, but I'm especially concerned when they're coming towards the camera. Is the AF-C of the Z6ii enough to keep up? Thanks in advance for your reply! I already hit the subscribe button so I'll be looking forward to your next adventures!

Hi Steve, what is the speed of the AF like on the Z6ii using F Mount lenses, i.e, the 500mm pf with the FTZ adapter? I've seen other videos mainly with the mark 1 Z versions where the speed of the AF using F Mount lenses was twice as slow compared to being used on a DSLR. The lack of customisation for me like you say is a big disappointment compared to what I can do with my D500. With no AF area option on the joypad and also FN2 button is two AF areas less compared to the D500 / D850 (the FN2 Button is defaulted to change AF-S to AF-C which takes up an AF area option). In my opinion the Z6ii is less of a camera for not missing a shot than a D850 & D500.

I'm rather frustrated by the increased turn on time, I've already tried alle sorts of batteries (EN-EL15/a/b/c) with no improvement 😪 thank you in advance!

Duade Paton has a video on the R6 that has this issue with losing focus once it misses and can't get it back. He was speculating it was the depth of field in the zoom, but some commenters thought this was common with zooms. I dunno. Seems really frustrating when you're shooting wildlife. Take care, hope 2021 is kind to us all.

Hi Steve, great informative video as always. How in your opinion does the af stack up when against the D500 using the 500pf. The 500 drives this lens quickly as you know, will the z6ll drive it and focus as quick? Do a lot of birds in flight photography. I have the Z50 which does ok on the pf for still wildlife although the focus is slow and unpredictable as you said sometimes with the z6ll, I can point right at a Robin 10ft away and it won't focus! Love the silent shutter though. Would love a comparison video on focus speed between z6ll and either 500 or 850 on the pf. Regards David. UK.

Thanks for a superb review! I have the first version Z7 and see the same glitches with af but probably more so than you do with version II. It would be interesting to see which af point the camera chose on your out of focus shots. Is it on the subject or somewhere else? With my camera the af point often is on the subject even though the subject is out of focus, which to me suggests that is, at least to some extent, a software problem.

The latter is very good and gives me great images but the body itself is not made for wildlife, from an ergonomic point of view. And I am super used to the Nikon ergos. However, I do like the silent shutter and the low light performances of the Z6 II, could surely complement the D500 very well. What do you think ?

The FTZ adapter works well, but there is some added noise to it as some lenses autofocus. This isn’t bad for photography, but will be noticeable in video, if you are using the on camera mics. The FTZ adapter works fine with Nikon G series glass, d-series and before glass will be manual focus. If you own third party glass, like Tamron, you should check their website to check compatibility because, some of Tamron’s glass is fine and some will require an update from their Tap In Console or you could send it in to them. My 35mm f1.4 works flawlessly. As an Example, my 90mm macro Tamron won’t work at all the shutter just flicks on and off. There are three different types of this lens that Tamron list as yes it will or no it won’t and two of them won’t work. The Tamron 70-200mm g1 does the same thing, not as much and the g2 depending on firmware will have the same problems, but the g2 has a firmware fix, most of their g2 stuff does- due to the Tap In Console the g1 stuff, doesn’t and has no compatibility with the Tap In Console. The Tamron Tap In Console is used for firmware updates and lens calibrations and it is hooked up directly to the lens and the Console is plugged into your computer. My 45mm Tamron will work and shoot 6-7shots, the lens will make a noise and stop shooting, sometimes give an error message and then allow me to either shoot six to seven times again or turn the camera off and on again-this lens requires an update, which can be done at Tamron or with the Tap In console. I use to be a d750 owner, but never owned, but used the d850. Sigma lenses, I couldn’t tell you about because I don’t own any Sigma glass. I traded in my d810 and have the Z6, but I kept my D500, so I have the best of both worlds. I would if you could rent a z7II body when ever they are available to be rented before you make the purchase.

I'm curious as to what the impact of the F mount is with regards to the lens performance. Do you have any opinion as to whether or not thats a issue? When I use my 1.7x teleconverter on that lens I do notice a auto focus speed decrease which for birds in flight is pretty disappointing. thanks for the video, it definitely piqued my interest in going back to a full frame camera.
