What bird photo scenarios do you encounter most?

I have the Z 5 and now a Z 180-600mm. For non fast birds it is very good. I don't like the tracking subject. Good to see you trying it in this video. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed. I don’t like the tracking function either. In the z8 and z9 it’s so much better.

Thanks for making this video interesting to see how you made out….hopefully Nikon will have more lower end cameras that can really track….seems like a very long wait.

Yeah I don’t think it would take much for them to do some basic upgrades that would make a large difference.

That was interesting. I liked how you showed how the tracking was doing. (btw the Z5 still has the same dust spot as your last video with it.) 😁

I also have Z5 , using it for bird photography, as well. I am using my Z 180-600mm lens, and I find it focusing much faster and accurate than my F mount lenses via FTZ adaptor. I use wide area L AF mode and move the box around, sometimes use subject tracking too. 1:54 Animal detection AF mode does nothing to find birds in Z5, it works only on Zf/8/9

Great video Ralph, one question can you use the VR of the Tamron on the Z5 as well as the camera VR or do you have to turn it off.

I use a z50 with a tamron 100-400 and the ftz adaptor. This is a challenge but without using animal detection that’s not too bad.

Nice work. You’d gets lots of reach out of that given the crop sensor. 👌

The Z series of cameras have an old-school film look -- and that's a good thing. So do I buy the Nikon z5 or the OM System OM-5?

Well the way to answer that is weigh up what you’ll use it for and then compare the specs of each against that. Factor in budget and which you’ll enjoy using more and you’ll be pretty close to an answer.

If you're looking for blackout free you need something like the Z6 ii, the Z5 is an extremely capable camera but I wouldn't say it's a great choice for bird photography. To be honest having used the Z6 ii as well that has issues with AF especially if they're coming towards you etc
