NIKON MIRRORLESS camera will be BETTER than SONY - Explained!

Ғылым және технология

Nikon mirrorless vs Sony mirrorless. (FULL FRAME) ... what do you think/ who's going to win?
Nikon is launching their mirrorless camera system and Sony is about to be challenged in the space. Sony has been on top for so long with the mirrorless camera battle but thats just because they have been the only ones taking it serious. Well that is all changing with the Nikon mirrorless camera 2018 release, due in just a few days.
The Nikon mirrorless camera specs seem to be right up there with the Sony A9 and could maybe even beat it. They are even bringing out a new Nikon mirrorless mount called the Z mount. The first two cameras are likely to be called the Nikon Z6 Z7 and the Nikon mirrorless lenses could be something pretty spectacular too. The Nikon f/0.95 lens. Say what!!!!!!!
This could make the Nikon mirrorless camera full frame one of the most desirable cameras on the market. the Nikon z6 z7 comers will be 24mp and a huge 45 mp. wow.
Nikon's mirrorless camera video capabilities are going to be up there too. $k recording at 30fps and who knows maybe time-lapse recording at 8K. wow. Nikon's mirrorless camera leak have been happening to create some awesome buzz around their new system.
Thank you Nikon mirrorless rumors (nikonrumors) for keeping us all to date on the info.
Nikon v Sony mirrorless
Nikon mirrorless adapter will allow users to use all the older Nikon las from more than 60 years which means this could be the most important mirrorless camera 2018.
which do you think is the best mirrorless camera 2018

Adapted glass isn’t the same as native glass. Sony tried it wit the A mount to E and it’s not great. Hype doesn’t = quality

Adapters don't have mirrors. It's basically a tube that takes a lens not meant for that camera body and adapts it to fit that camera. Some adapters have electronics and some do not. Also a few might have a lens inside it to be a focal reducer and mimic a larger sensor.

No Nikon I think is going to have an even more challenging time. A lot of Nikon glass focusses by a motor in the body not the lens. If you don't care about AF and like to manually focus then it's not an issue but across the board not just sony, adapted glass is never as great as native glass. Slower autofocus, worse low light performance, communication errors etc. It's not just a simple solution.

greysuit17 Valid point. Adapters can have their own issues, as did Sony’s. But adapters would be a stop-gap, somewhat cumbersome method. Also, I would not expect adapted lenses to have the extra wide f-stop performance mentioned in the vid.

Well, it wasn't a rea contender in the market. the Nikon 1 series was a looooong time ago and kind of before its nit. its main issue which is why this new Nikon mirrorless is different is because its full frame and can compete on a professional level. I hope they produce something as good as sony

I'm a Nikonist guy switching to Sony A7iii (38 years using Nikon). The great Nikon goal to beat Sony are the lenses, but let me tell you this. The F mount will never work 100% with the new mount, mainly because they aren't motorized. So Nikon will have a new mirrorless camera with Ground Zero lenses meanwhile Sony is now fully covered with glasses. Also you can mount "manually focusing", and cheap, every lense in the world to Sony, even Nikon F pre-ai lenses "without conversion" like I do with my A6000. I can't mount my old Nikon glasses to my D750.

Such a huge amount of second guessing. Sony was criticized for needing an adapter to access lenses... you say that is an advantage for Nikon? Wonderful frame resolution... just like Sony's current lines. Whole new lens mount... just like Sony's e-mount. Lots of click-bait, pretty light on content. One thing we do know... Nikon had better bring out a better camera after all this hype or they will look pretty silly. And I guess a second thing... they will be using Sony sensor technology.

What you mean is "fabbed by Sony" and that's not Sony CAMERA, it's by Sony SENSOR division... 2 completely different companies. Plus Nikon gives them the specs and sony just produces the silicon, the solicon is then sent to Nikon where they add the components (electronics, baeyer filters, processing, etc...)... SO NO they are not just "sony" sensors, this is why the get different colors, noise levels, dr, etc.. (educate yourself on sensors, it's FREE at the Univeristy of Google ) I'd believe quite a bit of Sony's "tech" was "borrored" from nikon and don't forget Nikon has used many fab services over the years and you can't tell them apart from the sony's (so of course sony bought them all and are using a TON of tech that they surely did not develop). There's also the part where nikons Pro Body's have always used specific nikon designed sensors that have never been sony sensors (although not sure about d5). Also don't forget sony's lack of know-how in this field is leading them to put in half-a$$ hacks to try and fix things. For example their over processing of raw files (which the whole point of raw files is for them to be untouched ugggg) which leads to things like the star eater issues. Let's also not forget that tower jazz has been rumbling about big projects with a major camera maker which leaves Nikon and Canon, so most likely Nikon and that ship is about to float, so don't for a second assume it will be a Sony sensor as the talk has been that it'll be fabbed by towerjazz. I like sony sensors but the main reason I hate sony anymore (other than they've never really ever built real quality products, which we already see in sony cameras) but you fan boys are so dam ignorant and truly annoying that i'd never ever want to own a sony camera out of shear embarassment... besides, i have big hands so that rules them out. Here's whats going to happen. Sonys still probably losing money on the camera line or maybe finally breaking even but either way it hasn't been whats been paying their bills. Nikon and Canon will come out with their systems and it'll push sony to the back of the bus again, after all canons mirrorless crap already has a ton more market share then sony, so while you all think sony's the biggest, baddest thing ever... the truth is that they are lingering way back in 3rd place in mirrorless and about to get kicked back even further. At some point Sony won't want to be forking out all the R&D while nikon and canon let them spend away and then add them later at sony's cost. At that point sony will will junk their camera business like they do all the rest.

  • @jamwerx

I'm well aware of the distance between Sony cameras and Sony sensors. But Sony sensors is still selling technology they own to their respective customers. They can't/won't maintain two entirely separate lines of technology, and they will package their tech for sale to customers. That's business. The secret sauce, no matter how the marketing department bottles it, is still out of the same vat. with the same limitations. As for color and noise... ain't that software a wonderful thing? But more likely it's the quality of the electronics between the sensor and the memory card. either way I"m looking forward to Nikon's announcement and hope they have something terrific. Then everyone gains. If they have a "me too" camera, I worry for them.

jamwerx Exactly this. It's not as simple as "using Sony sensor". Nikon is involved at the microscopic level with their sensor developments. Sony just produces it for them. So more accurately it's Nikon's sensors are designed by Nikon and produced by Sony.

Besides, why limit FF glass with Sony APc crop mount? For legacy lenses, I will continue to use my D800 but if an 85 1.2 or 0.95 Z mount lens comes out quickly I will certainly be interested in the Z7. The lens can be simpler, have lower distortion and higher T stop value making it the winner for portraiture. Sony can never have fast lenses until the obsolete their mount once again and introduce a larger one, and use a thicker body. They ill have to increase the size of the body if they expect to compete in the pro field for ergonomics is important. Sony remains the least comfortable cameras on the market, and doubly so for heavier glass.

Vince, ahh partly wrong! I have adapted (Most recent Comelite adapter spl?) I have used my 85mm f1.8G, 16-35 f4 vr, 200-400 f4 on both my A9 and A7 iii and here is a neat thing. I have eye AF as well as face recognition. I have also purchased the MC-11 adapter to use on my old Canon 28 f1.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4 usm and the Sigma 150-600 for Canon. Even though I now shoot Sony (as of April) I really hope Nikon does knock it out of the park. I shot Nikon from 2008 until April 2018 when I decided I wanted to shoot Weddings, Theater, and events with a silent shutter. And since the change I have really enjoyed the silent shutter since making the change. Come on Nikon!

You cannot say Nikon is going ALL their old lenses to make them compatible with their new Mirrorless via an adapter, that is a BIG statement. Professionals who use cameras under real-life conditions would prefer native lenses not adapted lenses in order to utilise all the features of the new mount. One thing for sure Nikon camera is going to be more expensive than Sony's even if they have similar features. Nikon first models would have fewer features than their Sony counterparts. The race is ON, better for consumers.

For a couple of reasons, I swapped it all for a Sony A7III, Sony A7II, Sony 100 - 400mm f4.5/5.6, Sony 90mm f2.8 macro and Sony 28 - 70mm f3.5/5.6. Have I regretted my decision? Not for a moment. I no longer suffer from a dreadful ache in my hip and back after 7 - 8 hours shooting in the countryside. When I arrive home I can actually cut the grass etc., instead of collapsing in the chair. The quality of the images provided by the 100 - 400mm is, in my opinion, on a par with my old Canon 300mm f2.8L IS, and better than anything else I have owned. The 90mm macro provides excellent images, easily on a par with my Sigma 180mm and weighs far less and about half the price. So, Ed, for me it's about the weight of the system. The only Nikkor glass worth keeping will be the big, heavy, expensive stuff - which may not balance well on a lightweight, mirrorelss body.

Could ne a game changer and it's about time to get more competition into the market. I have a Nikon DSLR and a Sony mirrorless, both aps-c sensors. I looking for a full frame modell and was thinking of the Sony A7riii or the A7iii. Haven't decided yet. Sounds however that it could be worth waiting for Nikon.

Sony's cameras are using APS-C sized lens mount. Even the full frames. The lens diameter on the Nikon is much larger and opens up capabilities for fast glass. I personally think it all hinges on how effective the adapter is. If it can take almost all Nikon glass with no issues it'll probably succeed, but if it is like Sony and all these different adapters each with different caveats then it'll probably be the Nikon 1 system all over again

This is a great question. A lens usually isn’t its sharpest wide open. So an f1.4 I would want to be shooting at f1.8 as this is where it will perform better. So an f0.95 would all you to shoot at f1.2 and get a super sharp image. Focusing is going to be a MASSIVE challenge. But for low light this thing will be amazing. And of the settings allow studio portraiture could be something special too.

Canon discontinued its usability in their DSLR whereas Nikon vintage lens can still fit in Nikon DSLRs. For this reason, I made that leap to Nikon. If the adapter is unsatisfactory I might as well leapfrog to Sony.

I am watching you Ed! Interesting thoughts though I must say!! Nikon might bring a wonderful mirrorless camera BUT competing with Sony WOULD be a very difficult job IMHO. Please don't forget that Sony is two years ahead in the race and they are the #1 innovator at the moment. Also, don't forget that the sensors are Nikon is going to use is made by Sony, therefore, Sony will be ahead of the game always...until Nikon makes it's own sensor. Also, Sony has the G-Master glasses which is made for 100 MP - beating the G-Master would be a tough job for sure. Regardless who wins, it is good for us, the users for sure. Exciting time ahead... :)

Nikon isn't bringing anything new to the game, just a change of venue. They will have to come up with something pretty good for people who don't have a closet full of Nikon glass to give it a try. Also, what will the price of this unit be? Nikon can have the best camera going, but if people can't afford it, it won't sell. You can't assume it will be great just because it comes from Nikon; it has to prove itself in a new arena. Sony may be waiting for Nikon's new camera to drop to introduce a new a7S III and take the wind out of their sails. This should be interesting.

I think you are correct. they are playing catch up with Sony. However there are A LOT of people with Nikon glass (their f-mount lenses have been around since the 50's) so there is a huge consumer base who have been thinking of switching to Sony. Now these people may just stick with Nikon. But yes they need to prove themselves first. I just think some good sony mirrorless completion is going to help.

For a start, he's talking about Nikon's first full-frame mirrorless camera. Coolpix is not full frame. Also, whilst yes, Coolpix's don't have mirrors, when people talk of mirrorless cameras they mean digital mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Nikon Coolpix series are fixed lens compact cameras so they are not in the class of mirrorless cameras - even though they naturally do not have mirrors. Coolpix are considered point and shoot cameras. Nikon has a mirrorless camera series: Nikon 1, but it's only APS-C sized.

5 axis stabilization will not be there in Nikon. I think so as they have separate VR lens which they market separately in higher price. That will stick with Nikon. And using adapter to use DSLR lens on Mirrorless, slows the autofocusing speed a bit, as both the system have different autofocusing mechanisms.

Sony vs Nikon vs Canon vs Fuji vs Olympus? Or how about this - how is this camera going to change how a photographer shoots? What features will it have to make it a more compelling buy than a D850 (an already amazing camera)? This brand vs brand stuff is annoying and doesn't matter. What should matter is the feature set vs the price point and how that relates to the end user on whether or not to buy it and then, how will that feature set allow a photographer to shoot better? Off the top, you're right - that Z mount has some wicked possibilities for fast lens. If these Nikon bodies have no blackout shooting, crazy fast fps and EVF, Nikon users will be (or should be!) incredibly happy because they are some crazy amazing features to shoot with. That should be the focus. Not which brand vs which brand......imho :)

I couldn't agree more. Photography is about the photographer and not the equipment. HOWEVER, equipment is a part of it and competition in the market is a good thing as it drives innovation and helps to stabilize prices. these discussions why frustrating can hep influence what manufacturers do. Look at Mirrorless cameras. Nikon is only making it because of demand. demand only excites because sony created one and consumers have been yearning for it. I keep camera bodies for 5 years and more and still use them. but understanding where tech is going is a good thing I think. but to break it down, we should be spending more time learning to take better photos that discussing equipment.

The big two were sleeping on mirrorless while Sony paved the way with E-mount. Now Nikon wants to go and Canon may follow soon after Sony rised to releasing very capable mirrorless cameras. Sony has a time advantage but the other two has long heritage, experience and knowledge about cameras and lenses way before Sony. The two must play catch-up and it will put real competition towards Sony as their lens lineup is still small and expensive. If Nikon Full Frame mirrorless can fill in the gaps in Sony's E-mount lenses then it can potentially pose a threat to Sony.

On a Sony mirrorless, one can use ALL Canon AF lenses since 1990. It is called "smart adapter" and includes AF. My predictions are that that those cameras are more or less the pendants of the Sony cameras: A7III and A7rIII. They may be slightly be better with this and that, but less good in video. It will take Nikon 5 years to build a decent lens system.

I do believe Nikon has an advantage because they can reverse engineer Sony’s camera and expand on their weaknesses. However, I don’t believe this is going to be a blowout.
