Nikon Lenses that are awesome (and some are also cheap)

I buy and sell Nikon stuff to pay for my hobby and here's the 12 lenses I've ended up with. Where there's a great cheap lens, I have it.
Relates to my video about the best camera to buy as a beginner and the problem with Nikon D3xxx and D5xxx bodies.
Mentioned here are some great lenses. You can find them on eBay by searching these phrases:
- For the big f2.8 zoom there are many versions over the years. The one I have that is mentioned here is the "twin ring" Nikon f2.8, specifically the AF Nikon 80-200 f2.8 D
- For the smaller f4 zoom that I say is a great substitute it's a little harder to find in the noise, but it's the Nikon 70-210 f4 AF. When searching for that you might get results that are the newest Nikon f4, but also lots more.. Here's my blog post about it that will help identify it better visually: blur.bz/keith-hunniford-blog/...
- I then talked about the Nikon 28-105 f3.5-4.5 D which is a decent macro lens if that's all you have. I've since sold this as I really found I didn't use it. Still - it's a decent lens but for me it's competing against some REALLY good lenses that I own.
- Then i talked about the Nikon 35-70mm f2.8. This is pretty easy to find if you just search "Nikon 35-70mm f2.8" and you'll find some D and non D versions. The D version has the same optics except for the D has a coating that makes it better with flair.
- After that the Nikon 18-35mm f3.5-f4.5 G. This is in the current Nikon line up.
- The manual focus lens I then talked about was the "Nikon 20mm f4 AIS"
- Next up Nikon 85mm f1.8 G from the current line. I find it definitely better than the older 85mm f1.8 D
- 50mm f1.8 G.
- Moving to Macro "Nikon 60mm f2.8 D" and I expained that I prefer that to the newer 60mm G
- The Tokina 100mm f2.8 Macro lens is becoming more popular. it's great.
- I mention the quirky 600mm mirror lens, and they are all much of a muchness. Just search Nikon Mirror lenses and you'll find a bunch of 500mm and 600mm f8 lenses.

Love this video and your thinking. I very recently got the 24-85VR (which is now fallen in price used.) I got it for 24 & 28 focal lengths as I'm a portrait shooter with only primes and my widest was the 35mm f2D. The 24-85 surprised me. I use a D3x for portraits as I use low ISO and studio flash. At a stop or so smaller than widest aperture (and from 35-80mm) it starts to look pretty respectable (not quite as good as the primes - it's true.) They're cheap so you could afford to get one and try it out and re-sell it. Btw. the lenses I compared it with were: 35f2D, 50 1.8G, 85mm f1.8G (and you know that's Good!) Sigma 70mm f2.8 Macro (old screw drive version.) I often find I use that super cheap old 70mm macro for portraits instead of the 85mm as it's more flexible and also very sharp. I'd like to have the Nikkor 60mm f2.8D too but I can't justify it when the 70mm is a better portrait length for full frame and it's doing a good job. (I like eyes to have lots of detail in the iris.) Best Wishes, Tim (New subscriber & fan from Southampton, England)

Got my second 80/200 2.8 Nikon, great glass although little heavy but solid and well built. It helped me to build my image bank. Great and superb for bird shots in the Portugal, Tejo river estuary, as well as ordinary shots with quality and colour balance.

Did you keep the 28-105mm f3.5-4.5D ..? It's a great walk-around except for some flaring and CA in some situations.

Keifer, nice selection of lenses you have there. I own most of the same ones. I have found that oddly enough, my 28-105 D stays on my old D700 and almost never comes off. It is extremely useful and the best $100 I've spent in a long time. I also have the 20mm 2.8 D which the pixel peepers love to bad mouth, but I have gotten some really dramatic shots with it. I had the wide angle G zoom and sold it because the 20mm suited my needs and took up less space. I own the 70-210 F4 that I bought for $75, and really like it. Since you have both, do you think I'd be making a meaningful upgrade with the 80-200 f2.8 two-ring? I' always appreciate excellent build quality. In terms of a portrait lens, I've also had good luck with the sometimes hard to find 85mm f2 Nikkor Ai manual focus lens. Thanks for the video.

I do think the 80-200 f2.8 twin ring is a major step up from the f4, but I often shoot it wide open either for background separation or because I'm shooting indoor sports, so it being better in these scenarios is just physics. I went on a shoot on Saturday though where I just didn't want to take the weight and brought the f4.. and didn't use it ;) Bottom line, if I could only have one I'd want the 2.8.

I generally agree with your lens assessments. The Nikon 80-200 is a very good lens and I owned it, very sharp. I own the Nikon 60mm, the Tokina 100 and the Nikon 85mm. Some of the older manual focus lenses are superb like the 135, I own and 105mm AIS, less moving parts. As far as comparing the Nikon 80-200 vs some of the newer lenses 70-200, we have to be careful here unless you have tried them The newer Nikon 70-200 VR III, which is $2700 the latest one is worlds better than the 80-200, not even close, faster focus and better colors (Renting is always a good option to try before you buy). I personally don't get into doing quick sales of lenses and doing a lot of trades. I like to do my research first because what ever I buy I usually keep and you will take a beating in a lot of cases, but not all on trading lenses in, especially from a local shop. The Tamron 70-200 VC version one, I own is a better lens faster focus, but not necessarily worlds better in color rendition. Some lenses are expensive because Nikon and Canon can get the money and offer very little improvements and some are better because they offer better colors, coating, bokeh glass coatings, which help with ghosting and lens flare. It all depends on your need (if you are a professional landscaper, photo journalist, portrait, fashion and sports shooter doing magazine work) and your wallet, expensive lenses have their place, but 90 percent of the population doesn't require them. I believe in buying used lens first from a reputable camera shop or online from a great seller. The one trade that I recall doing was the Sigma 150-600 for a Nikon 105mm 2.8, because I used it and loved it and hated the Sigma. Building good relationships with local camera shops can help and it helped me get a Tamron 70-200 VC version one for $600 and a Tamron 150-600 VC version one for $600 as well. The premise is that you don't have to pay a lot to get a lot, you just have to be smart at how you spend your money and Ebay can be your biggest friend (I have bought a ton on Ebay) or your worst nightmare.

Nice lenses, in fact there's so much good lenses in the AF/AFD lines, 20/24/28 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4-1.8, 85 f/1.4-1.8, 105/135 f/2 DC, 180 f/2.8, 60/105 micro, 20-35 and 80-200 f/2.8... I'm not interested by the zooms because of the last Tamron 17-35 and 70-210, but still enjoy some of the primes!

If I hear ONE more grown ass male, crying about how a such and such camera is "too heavy". People, you do realize that, prior to the advent of 35mm, men used to schlep around with Mamiya RB 67's and Speed Graphics? According to my fancy Interwebs video box phone, I walked 11 miles around NYC a few weeks ago, carrying a Nikon pro body and a zoom lens. No aches and pains, and I'm not exactly built like an offensive lineman. Best value lens I've bought in 20 years of photography, is an old Nikkor 28-50mm f/3.5-4.5 Ai-s. I just bought it for the hell of it. Damned if it isn't my second favorite lens (out of about 10). Sharper than Vermont cheddar.

the 80-200 f2.8 AF is a rubbish lens. Useless at 2.8 or 4 and 200mm is only acceptable at 5.6. Also the auto focus is only good on stationary targets less than 80% of the time. Practice manual focusing for a year and you can do it faster and more accurately than that lens. I would grab the 80-200 f4.5 for a light, cheap, and reliable beater lens.
