Nikon FM vs Nikon FM2

An overview of the similarities and differences between the Nikon FM and the Nikon FM2, as well as an explanation for why I think the FM is one of the most overlooked and underrated 35mm slr cameras.

The FM *does* have a multi exposure button, it sits on the back of the top right, between shutter speed dial and prism. Thanks for the video.

I have the FM2 and the meter operates in the same way as you describe for the FM (-, -o, o, o+, +).

I currently own 2 FM cameras. One has the shutter lock, the other does not. I like them a lot! I also have a couple of other Nikon film cameras, however, this is 2024 so I'll only shoot one or two rolls per year. Liked your video, thanks for posting it.

Yes, sometime between '77 and '82 Nikon changed this. I don't have a big preference for either. I don't advance the film until I'm ready to shoot b/c it just creates unnecessary tension on the film. Not a big deal if you take a shot w/in 15 minutes, but it can mess up your film if you leave the film cocked for longer periods.

FM was my first Nikon camera, bought in 1981. Just bought another today c/w 50mm f1.8E -- the original "kit lens." The function of the meter should be same for both cameras.

Thanks, I have both cameras as well as several other Nikons ( you do not need the background noise)

I think it stand for F-mount mechanical. Good comparison. I’d recommend trying also the F2 or F3. The feeling on those is much more solid, making the FM(2) feel of lesser quality. The FM is lighter and smaller tho.

Also the F2 has stepless shutter speeds which gives more control.

It’s F (mount) Mechanical for the FM and F (mount) Electronic for the FE

Ummm... the Nikon FM is a better camera for double/multiple exposures than the FM2 imo. There is a button to the left and behind the shutter speed wheel. Simply pull this to the left and cock the shutter after the first shot. The film will not advance allowing for a double/triple, whatever exposure. The FM2 has a lever similar to the FE and FE-2 that isn't has easy to use. If you aren't real careful, you'll advance the film half way, which nobody wants. Also, the shutter in the FM2 is not faster in the FM2 than the FM. Both have vertical plane shutters. However, the FM2 has honeycomb titanium shutters which allows the front and rear shutter to be placed closer together. However, like 99% of other cameras, the shutters actually move at the same speed. If overexposure is a problem at 1/1000 at any aperture, it's good to use a graduated ND filter on the lenses of these film cameras. Having the 1/4000 vs 1/1000 really does nothing for me b/c the ND filter not only allows you to adjust the exposure, but it makes many images look better. Especially when shooting water. Finally, the FM is compatible with pre-AI lenses. Trying to mount these great and mostly affordable lenses on an FM2 is likely to damage either damage the camera or the lens. I do own them both. But there's no reason to. I will probably sell my FM2n b/c they have become overpriced. Especially when the FM is more capable for less $.

The F designation belongs to the mount designation.

Fully manual designation would not work for the FM3a.

The FM3a has a manually controlled shutter. The aperture priority function really is just an extension of the light meter. It will work fine in manual mode with no battery as will the FM & FM2, FM2n.
