Nikon D5600 Hands-On and Opinion

I had hands-on time recently with the Nikon D5600. Is it a solid mid range DSLR? Let's find out! I compare this to my Canon EOS Rebel SL2 and also comment on what type of person the D5600 might be a good fit for. The D5000 series is Nikon's step up from their entry level with a little bit more of everything over the 3000 series. The stand out feature of this camera is the fully articulating screen.

Thanks, I had a D5100 a while back. The general design is pretty nice for the price. I didn't get a huge amount of footage variety for this one. I think a customer came into the shop and wanted to see it and I didn't pull it back out afterward. These videos are doing alright from a views standpoint. At least better than my other types.

It doesn't have great video autofocus like all of Nikon's DSLRs (they use "contrast detect" instead of "phase detect" in liveview, so not that great for video unless you use manual focus). Maybe check out the Nikon Z50, Sony A6100, Sony A6400, Canon M50, or Canon M6 mark II.

There are a lot of options. It depends on what you want to do. A Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G might be good, or the 50mm f/1.8G. Those would let you more easily blur the background.

Something with a decent buffer and frames per second if you plan on doing bursts. Lens wise that will depend on how close you can get to the action. If you are far off maybe something around 300mm or more, but a 70-200 lens might be alright. Most cameras these days are "good enough" to get you started. I don't do much sports stuff these days, so my videos don't focus on it. If you have the cash, go with Nikon's D7000 series over the D5000 series if you can. If you have a lot of cash to spend then the D500 is very good with sports and large bursts.

The 18-140mm lens would be more convenient because you wouldn't have to switch between the 18-55 and 70-300, however if you want long range you will need the 70-300mm instead.

For the D5600 I'd personally rather have a 35mm f1.8 instead of 50mm for general use. 50mm on the D5600 would be better for portrait style photography. Lower cost general purpose lenses like 18-140mm are a mixture of compromises. It gets you a lot for a reasonable cost, but there are drawbacks. It sounds like you already understand that. Cameras like the D5600 generally are pretty good in lower light because the sensor is good overall, but the 18-140mm simply can't get as much light into the camera as a lens like the 35mm f1.8. By the way, if you want to do "vlogging" where you hold out the camera and film yourself I'd suggest the Canon EOS M50 instead because it has good auto-focus in video mode.

  • @ScottJWaldron

    3 жыл бұрын

I've never used the 800D, but it has the usual 24mp canon dual pixel AF sensor, so it will be better with live view autofocus and video autofocus, but the nikon will have less noise in the photos and video at high iso. Maybe like 1-stop better is my guess, so 3200 vs 6400 iso or whatever.

The D5600 generally has more features and a fully articulating LCD screen, but it costs more. Image quality wise there probably isn't much of a difference. You will have to figure out for yourself if you want to pay for the extras a D5000 series camera offers over a D3000 series camera.

KEH has a "like new minus" for $470, but no lens is included (though it has a 180 day warranty). On ebay, sold listings are all over the place, though with a kit lens it's around $550 to $600. I'd say that if the lenses are decent you are getting a good deal if the camera is in nice condition.
