Thanks for the update to the review! I'm trying to sell my Lumix GH4 so that I can buy the D500. Every review I've found have been saying the same things (which is great). I can't wait to finally go back to Nikon and own this beast!

Thanks for the D500 update. Your reviews are very well presented, refreshingly honest, with a nice balance between the technical capabilities and real life use. I love my D500 for outdoor use, hiking, fishing, and landscapes. The form factor is great and it is and ideal weight carrying long distance and its size is a great fit for smaller hands. Those of us who grew up with manual film cameras know that much of the difference between an average and a great photo is being in the right place and capturing the image at the right time. The speed and accuracy of image acquisition of my D500 means if I can get myself into the right place, I am better able to capture the image at the right time. Now I need to watch your lens review. Cheers.

Nice Job. I recently got the D500...just before Xmas I decided after I renting a teleconverter for my canon 100-400 lens which was very nice , the I didn't the combo panned out for me...right there and then I decided i needed have a conversion .... I didn't want to continue shooting canon. I decided to ship off all my canon gear which include my 7d Mark ll and assorted lends, to B&H I took the money and purchased the D500, I found the switching very easy and actually preferred the menu systems and buttons. I got the 200-500 nikon lens and spent a week testing for an all around lens for everyday video and landscapes... I settled on the sigma 24-105 after comparing it to the nikon 16-80 really long and hard which would have been find if I hadn't gotten my hands on the Sigma...the built quality and quietness is excellent. I have been able to get really nice sharp! Birding shots with my wildlife setup, which is a really good test... and it surpass my exceptions with flying colors. The camera is really easy to shot and your videos have helped me find those hidden gems within the D500 :-)

I can't agree more. I love my D500! Before I bought it I had a D750 and a D800 ... And I do some video with my DSLR, so video is important for me. I sold my D800 and I do not miss it. :) Camera one now is my D500 ... And I really hope the next FX will look and feel the same as the D500. I like the place for the ISO-button.

This is the DSLR I've been waiting for from Nikon for my next DSLR purchase, but after using the Fuji X-T1, I now want all my new cameras with EVF's. I think I'll wait and see if Nikon makes the DF2 a mirrorless full frame. That would be sweet.

I just got this camera, moving from the D40x and D90. So the layout is very new to me. Thus far, my only complaint is that the highlights seem to get blown consistently. I have to compensate either with shutter speed, or ISO to solve it. For example, using the kit lens for the D500. Shooting at 18mm, I took aim at the grass. The final shot had vingetting, which was expected, but the dynamic range and color saturation were superior at the corners and as it approached the center the highlights began to wash out the color in the grass. Is there perhaps a setting or something I have missed?

I'm a retread photographer who got back into the hobby in December 0f 2016. I just moved up from a d5300 to a d500. I don't have a lot of experience with contemporary bodies so maybe I'm easily impressed but I'm blow away by the performance of my new camera compared to the d5300 (which I thought I was pleased with before...)I shoot birds and this thing is a beast! Fast Fast Fast focus and lots of good captures of BIF. I loved your video and subscribed to you on You tube.

Just picked up my D500 three days ago. Using the L0.3-L1.0 ISO is interesting to say the least. Colors appear more vibrant besides the higher contrast. Going to play with that some more. Nice review and you've come a LONG way from your very first "speculative" video thinking the D500 was a "too little, too late" addition. ;)

My only wish it that it had a higher pixel count but I do better with it than my D750 or other higher resolution camera's now sitting on the shelve..

I do nature and wildlife, portraits and events and travel photographer and my go to lenses are the Sigma 17-70, the Tamron 70-200 VC and the Nikon 24 f1.8G and for wildlife the Tamron 150-600 G2.

Absolutely, the AF is the best there is and with a 17-55 f2.8 or the 17-70 f2.8-4 you have an outstanding combo. The snapbridge app is fabulous for giving clients a quick image and with a 70-200 f2.8 together with the transsyandatd lens, you can do virtually anything. I'd add the 60mm Nikon macro lens for ring and detail photos. If you want to use primes, I'd choose the NIKON 24mm f1.8 as my 35mm and a 35mm as a "50mm"

Hey snap chick. I currently own an a6000, and after recently shooting a baseball game and having been very disappointed when I got the images on the computer and found so many that missed focus, that I decided to get a d500. I'm going to get the new tamron 70-200 g2 but am having a problem picking a standard zoom lens. Between Nikon, sigma and tamron do you have a recommendation? Would you recommend getting a dx lens or fx? I don't have an fx camera at present but will someday. I'm thinking of getting a couple primes to round out but still need a good standard zoom. Thanks for your time, love your videos.

2 or more shots with relaxed shutter motion? I also have that with my Fuji's. No problem with the new ones but with my X-E2 you could fill the buffer with 4-5 relaxed shots in succession. (buffer fills in about 8-10 shots and it shoots at arround 8 fps.)

I liked it so well I splurged on a 2nd one as a backup instead of my old D7100 or a new D7200. She hit on all the major points but one thing really stands out beyond the crazy high speed tracking, and that is that it focuses incredibly well in low light. I frequently take pet action shots near sunset and this camera focuses in those tough conditions when my other Nikon DX cameras just wouldn't. Note that it even focuses better then the D750 in those conditions. Crazy!

I'm about to jump from a D3200 to this camera. Will I be overwhelmed or am I making a wise decision? I'm only 16 months into DSLR after having a FE-2 back in the early 80's but I think it's prudent that if I'm going to dive in into this and get serious again about an old passion/career choice why not go with something that'll be great for years to come! Thoughts? Thanks for any input.

I have seen endless videos nitpicking on minor differences, like they were huge, so I actually was believing in needing a full frame camera. Hearing you as the owner of an awesome full frame body, the D810, saying that on contrary those differences are in fact minor, and even hearing you using it less since owning the D500 got me converted. Thank you! Yes, there is a 1.5x increase in the range, because of the crop, but after using a cam with a usable focal length not below 34mm (because of a lens hood needed, which interfered on lower focal lengths), i know, that i will be fine with a standard zoom arround 24-70mm, which should resemble something like 36-105mm. I actually think, i have finally found my ultimate choice, though an expensive one. The D500 and the Nikkor ED VR 24-70 1:2.8E lens. It will be a high priced start, but I think, this will make endless combinations and many following purchases redundant.

One thing that you didn't mention is the battery life. Using the standard EN-EL15 battery (LI-ION20) I'm regularly getting around 5000+ photos on one charge. Last week I shot almost 6000 photos on my D500 at my daughter's two day volleyball tournament and only changed the battery because I got nervous about running out of juice before they were done. Today I shot close to 5000 photos. Yeah, I motor drive when taking photos at events...

I find it bizarre that moving the ISO button from top left to top right is a criticism. Apart from on the D7000 its the worst place for it because you have to take your hand off the zoom on a lens to get to it and miss a shot. It makes so much more sense to have it on the right so you can change ever exposure setting with one hand. You never need to take you hands away from one position while shooting.

Just bought the D500. Also own the consumer D5500. D5500 has a FULLY touchable touch screen for all menus and a FULLY articulated LCD. I know that's all ergonomics but boy I sure miss those on the D500 - bit of a step backwards there for Nikon - not to mention 24MP vs 21 - oh well. The D500 is Great but gosh, I would have thought it could have been a bit more modernized.

I am not a pro nor claim to be, more so amature and all I can say is the D-500 is one bad ass camera and so easy to use. The layout of the buttons is right where you need them, the touch screen is awesome and most of all it is so fricken fast. Using Tamron glass, 18-240, 12-300 and 150-600. I do not do a lot of portrait more so fast action sports, wildlife and general shooting and this bad boy is not a disappointment. My last DSLR was a D-60, yes it is an old one and what an upgrade the D-500 is. If you are like me and want to make sure you get the bang for the buck, this camera is well worth the 2k. Love this camera and know it will give me years of great use. Snap Chick, I can not thank you enough for doing all your reviews, your advice goes a long way and your videos have taught me a lot about photography. You rock lady.

My only issue with D500 is that it does not show a preview of the image I just took. I like to get a quick look at the image to check on exposure but forced to hit the play button to look at it. I have been using the D300s the past 6 years. The ISO limit was 6400 on that camera and there is a huge loss in quality at that speed. I just shot a concert at 10,000 ISO with the D500 and the images still looked great.

Hi. Great video- extremely informative. I’m about to pull the trigger on the D500, as soon as I can launder my own money from my wife. Quick question- I shoot high action (soccer/ auto racing) and wildlife. Are my old D60 lenses compatible with the D500 body? 18-55, 55-200, and my most recent addition, my NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. I liked the D500 so much I bought another body, so I can leave a 70-200 on one and a 24-70 on the other body for action sports. And yes it does have too high of a frame rate. Left my camera on it the bag, hit a bump and with in seconds that darn thing created almost 500 inside my bag images. I never use my D3 anymore. And I really love the XQD cards. Way better then CF or SD.

I tried the D500 with the new 70-200 f2.8 & it blew me away. The only problem I have with it is that they didn't fully implement the touchscreen to change menu settings. Otherwise I think Nikon should have done more for DX lenses.

Amanda Brown: If your budget allows, get the D500......its perfect for fast action and the focusing is extremely fast and spot on every time. I don't use video much but the D500 has 4K (much better than "full HD") and you get just under 30 minutes at this quality for your videos.

So... having a D810 as a main body for weddings, which one would you recommend as a second body: D750 or D500? I see pros and cons in both: - D750: FF, incredible low light performance, not great AF - D500: DX, good low light, great AF (for reception) Any suggestion?

They're both great bodies; the answer for you depends on how you like to shoot and the types of lenses you have. I prefer for all of my bodies to have the same control scheme, especially in a situation where I'm switching back and forth during an event. Another thought is the lenses you have. Do you have suitable lenses for the way you'd want to use the second body? For example, if you want to have the ability to use the second body for wide angle shots, do you have a lens that will provide that capability on a cropped sensor body? I hope that helps! :)

Hi There Snap Chick, Hope you are doing well. I recently purchased a brand new D 500 and faced couple to issues that I would like to bring to your notice. One: I am using the SB 900 Flash with it and it doesn't fire. To get it to fire, I have to keep it on "Master". Something I discovered the hard way and with lots of trials. Second, I took another KZreadr's advice and kept the ISO on Auto; BIG MISTAKE... I was shooting in the dark and the camera decided that the best ISO was 37000 something and not the picture is utterly useless. I learned that the hard way. So, I would advise people to set the ISO manually rather than putting it on Auto. Another minor issue is the NEF RAW can not be used in Lightroom or Photoshop and after hours and hours of research I had to download a software from Adobe that converts it to DNG and in the conversion, the files size reduces which also means that the Quality has reduced. I'm pretty sure, Nikon will come up with an extension for Lightroom and Photoshop to fix this issue.

I love everything about the camera EXCEPT the lack of pop-up flash. It is a deal breaker for me, I rarely have use for a flash but when I need it I need it and cannot believe they have made such a high spec camera without one. I also notice the D850 doesn't have one either. I don't take portraits etc, I just find that on the odd occasion I need a fill in and do not want to carry a clip-on flash gun for such in-frequent use. I might buy the older D810 instead but the D810 does not have the tilting screen. Also though, the D810 is a few years old now too, hmm, what to do?. Thanks for the reviews, excellent and helpful.

Hey Snap Chick! At 6:52 you mention that you wish you were able to reconfigure your D810 to have the same ISO button placement as your D500 & I may have a solution for you! On my D810, I assigned the record button to change ISO sensitivity. In the menu, under controls at f13, you can set it to ISO! So if you press the record button while shooting, you can change your ISO with the rear dial and then also change the ISO to auto with the front dial! Hope this helps!

All three. Sharpness is a lens factor more than camera. Image quality is something else. Have owed all 3 and would need to factor in what I am doing with the images. The D7200 is most versatile and just slightly better than the D7100 overall. If I could have only one camera (other than my D500) it would be the D7200. The D750 is different because it is FX and amazing images. I crop images extensively so I like the DX better but if you are a "straight" shooter. That D750 is it. I shoot about 85% D500(DX) and 15% D750 (FX)

I don't have a D500, and I'm not considering one. However, I have a D7100, as well as a Pentax K-3 and some 8 Pentax lenses. Long story short: I'm selling a bunch of those lenses and expanding the Nikon system, precisely because of responsiveness. With my K-3, in anything but broad daylight, there will be a slight delay between me pressing the button and the camera focussing, more so when light levels drop further. Everyone seems to praise nowadays for their K-1 and other stuff. But I have missed shots with my Pentax because the AF just didn't act fast enough, or because it wouldn't settle, instead jumping back and forth around the correct focus position and finally giving up (even with a pro-grade 16-50 f/2.8 lens). I'm not talking about landscapes or studio work. I'm talking about the various conditions you encounter when travelling. I simply don't want to fight with my camera any longer in those cases. I want it to work, focus, without quirky issues.

As for which body you should choose for street shooting or anything else, I'd suggest getting a few of the bodies you're considering in your hands in a shop so you can see which you like using the best. Especially with street shooting, where you need to be quick on the draw, you want to be able to quickly navigate your camera's settings in a way that seems native to you. :)

Hey folks - have any of you portrait shooters considered going to the D500 rather than another full frame? I currently shoot a D700 (old & low megapixel), but if I could get better image quality at the same ISO with D500 images enlarged to match the D700 images, then I'd be tempted for all the other benefits of the D500. Lee - did you have a D700? I tried this with Studio flash portriats using my friend's D5500 and my D700 recently. I think the modern sensor had more sharpness and detail, but I still preferred the colour and overall look of the older D700 images. I'm thinking if the comparison was done with the D500 it might turn out in favour of the D500. Anyone tried it. Also what portrait lens would you use on the crop sensor? I use the 85 f1.8G on the D700 which is wonderful. Nikkor 50mm f1.8G or Tamron 60mm f2.0? Nikkor 50mm f1.4 AF-D maybe? Your experiences welcome.

I was really looking at the D500 as something cool to get me through the wait to upgrade my D750 to the D820 or whatever it will be called. Now, I wonder if I even need FX. I never think, "boy, I wish I would have used my D750 on that pic." The biggest downside of the D500 is the Nikon lens selection. I wish there were at least *exact* DX versions of the Holy Trinity FX lenses. For example, I use my 24-70mm f/2.8 where I would have used my 70-200mm f/2.8 on the D750. Not quite the same, but the 70-200 is just too long for general use on the D500. In this case, I guess I would need something like a 50-135 f/2.8. Thanks for the video SC!

  • @WhittyPics

Philip Andreicuk The 810 is a full frame camera while the D500 is a DX. That could explain why the D810 is a little bigger and heavier. There is no pop up flash in the D500 and that capacitor takes up a lot of room. Wildlife shooters prefer DX and appreciate a smaller camera

  • @WhittyPics

    @WhittyPics

Philip Andreicuk I don't know? The D700 is only 12 megapixels while the D800 is 36. It takes more RAM and more processing power for those larger files. There are also 2 card slots that the D700 or D300 doesn't have. If you think about it, there is a LOT of crap shoved inside a camera. There is a mini computer inside there. The D300s has 2 card slots. I don't know which camera you have. I am sure there is a reason. Not everybody wants a big heavy camera. Those D series are tanks. I used to have a D2x

Some amount of image size reduction is to be expected when cropping or if you are shooting in RAW and exporting in JPEG. Have you checked your export options in Lightroom? There is a section on the export window where you can specify size/quality of your exported images.

I have a D610 and I was very disappointed by this Nikon camera. On indoor situations I hardly get a focused picture, in spite of the VR lenses. My option now is the D500 or the D810. I'm not considering the D750 because of its low-pass filter on the sensor the photo-portrait images are somehow softened and they are not so sharp as in the D500 or D810.
