I totally understand the coming home feeling. It's just very nostalgic. reminds you of just how it was before mirrorless. Makes you laugh, at what you've gotten used to, what you missed and even some of the short comings just feel amusing. great video as usual

Outstanding images! Great video...I purchased my D500 a year ago when I was ready for a new Nikon body...it was between the D500 or D750...pulled the trigger on the D500 and have been blown away by it from the very beginning! I love my little monster.

@@turgs1 for best quality get these two: Nikon 17-55mm f2.8g AFS, and Nikon 70-200mm f2.8g AFS, if you need longer reach maybe the 80-400mm instead.

In the beginning, I was not very excited about my new D500, but now after a year of shooting 100 thousands of pictures with it, I can only say, I love it. A workhorse that delivers quality pictures all the time. Thanks for a very honest and nice video, and every one of them words rang true to me.

I use an EOS R as my main camera, but I also bought a used 5D mark 2 just for the feeling xD There are still fields in which the DSLR runs rings around mirrorless systems - case in point wildlife photography and weddings (focus assist from the flash doesn't work on mirrorless)

What you said at 4:20 -- yes, yes, yes!! "Another reason, the Optical Viewfinder . . . I enjoy looking through the lens again {with the D500] . . .I FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO THE SCENE when I'm actually LOOKING AT IT instead of a tiny screen." That is what I've always loved about the SLR & DSLR experience: CONNECTING with the subject, drawing close to it,, shutting out the rest of the the world, that only looking through the lens of an OVF can give. Such an important reason. Thank you for stating something not often mentioned by other reviewers. Excellent video!

Glad to see you picking back up the 500. Funny the nostalgia factor is part of the same reason I love the Fuji x system it brings back memories of shooting with film. Just like how the 500 brings back the good days of DSLR’s for you. Just instead of 30-ish images a roll it is now 30 images a charge (not that bad but next to nothing when compared to a DSLR) :D

Indeed, its always fun to go back and forth every now and then, same goes for range finders and waist-level finders, all these didn't rule decades of the photography world for no reason. And its fun to experience how different cameras and viewfinding methods inspire and alter your style.

I had a D500 for about a year.Without question a beast especially with the hi ISO ability . The picture quality is very nice straight out of the camera. So why did I sell it ? It was always to much gear for every day use. Of course its nice for birthday parties or other festivals but to carrying it around everyday its just to heavy especially if you use the 70-200 VR or similar lenses. I highly recommend this camera if you don't mind the weight. I bought me now a 10 year old Leica M8 since I have the M2 already and I can use the same lenses. So far I am not missing my lovely Nikon.

If you never tried a D300s, you would never know. A nice addition to the lens line up would be the tokina 11-16 f2.8 DXii or the newer version 11-20 f2.8

I have had my D500 for almost a year now and absolutely love it, largely for many of the reasons you’ve identified (i shoot a lot of wildlife too). I grew up on film with my Olympus OM1 and 2 (that’s dating myself) and smiled when you spoke of feeling “joyful” when shooting with it. I do too. The damn thing (my D750 too) just feels so good in my hands and when I’m looking through it. Another great video...kudos. Great video , great pictures. You keep your quality high as always and it's nice to see that you appreciate both DSLR's and DSLM's. I personally bought a sony a6000 because I liked it's small body, it's great image quality and it was much more comfortable for me to use than all the other DSLR's in the price range. But I don't worship sony or mirrorless in general. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Just for me personally (and my budget) the a6000 paired with a Minolta 50mm F1.7 is great.

I'm still with my D200, thinking of getting a D500 at a good price. But, as with the D200 lately, I wonder if it will be left in the drawer instead of taken everywhere. Or maybe it was because in poor light, me having no VR lens, I just didn't like D200 at high iso and low light focus hunting. Could get a Z50+16-50+FTZ for the price of this D500 (3k shutter, like new), my GAS is high :)

Another great review Matthias. There are very few reviewers who point out the problems of mirrorless cameras. The Cameraville recently showed the frustrations of shooting wildlife mirrorless. The main one is that the EVF is usually lagging real time and seemingly needs you to fire your camera like a machine-gun and hope that your shot materialises by chance from the burst of captures. Mirrorless seems to have allowed manufacturers to sell cameras to people who were happily settled with equipment that was so good that they had no need to buy a new body in a hurry. Then sell them a camera so full of flaw they needed to manufacturer and sell them the improved version within a year. The direct view from the lens has its advantages and the D500 shows the virtues of DSLR camera bodies well. I do accuse Nikon of a form of gigantism in their designs. Bodies and lenses that have everything you could need with reliability and with build quality a given but, the bodies and lenses made your hands look almost child small.

I’m thinking about buying a D500 for street photography. Is the touch AF on the screen responsive when tilted, so that you don’t need to look through viewfinder? Is there a worthwhile 35mm equiv. Nikon prime lens that doesn’t have a huge footprint?

I consider myself fortunate because I own a Nikon D500 and an Olympus EM1 mark II. I photograph wildlife and these two cameras compliment each other perfectly for my style. They are the two best cameras on the market for me (I don't presume to speak for anyone else). I use the D500 for birds/dragonflies/butterflies in flight and macro; and the EM1.2 for slow moving or stationary subjects and some close up images. If I had to choose between them, I would choose the EM1.2. In my hands it is nowhere near as good as the D500 for flying subjects but equals it in other areas. It also has the brilliant Pro Capture and in camera focus stacking. Fortunately, I do not have to choose between them.

Solid review. One thing I miss (Oly and Sony shooter here) is reliable AF in varied scenarios. Debating swapping Olympus for Nikon and keeping Sony for MF work. Three systems is just to much so one has to go. Was really holding out for the E-M1 II. Might still give it a swing, but the few times I've tried it I was disappointed in the low light focus tracking. From what I can tell, outside of that it is brilliant. This video though, definetly makes a compelling case for the D500!

Oddly, I recently got a Nikon DSLR for similar reasons. Back in August I got in mint condition a 80-400 Nikkor AF-D on eBay. In September, the local camera store had a D300s with only 15,000 pictures taken on it. For almost half the cost of the Fuji 100-400, I have a camera and lens that is a dedicated weather resistant system for wildlife photography. And if I want to use the lens on my Fuji cameras - no problem. I get to enjoy the way sensors render the images differently and I get AF for wildlife on a DSLR. One area I found my Fuji cameras fail me is on the beach with sharply angled intense sunlight - having this DSLR I can enjoy dealing with this type of lighting thanks to a optical viewfinder. The battery life is amazing. I however don't miss thee grip, my hands are small and the D300s similar to my old Canon 5D reminds me how small my hands are with DSLRs. Interestingly, this makes me using the X-Pro2 even that more enjoyable. :)

For me ,Dslr is just built like a tank,if you are a professional shooting hundreds of photos a day its perfect, its just made to be abused, got a larger battery that last all day,Mirrorless if you use it alot and abuse it,thats where you will see its weakness, eventually a part of the camera just breaks down, and ive experienced overheating issues where the camera just shuts down,so yeah it depends on what you use it for actually..

The D500 and D850 uses the same sensor cut in different sizes, same processor Expeed5 and same AF system, differences between D500 and D850, D500 is light, faster, and cheaper, while D850 has 56% larger sensor, and that 56% of sensor happen to record the area where most lenses perform the worst. With the two Sigma ART 1.8 zooms, D500 out perform D850 by large margin, much better system.

When I am not shooting film like today and I need a fast focus, easy to use, lightweight full featured camera I take my Nikon D5500. It is not as high end a model as your D500 but still works very fast in a situation where your are indoors with florissant kids action park where you want to catch the kids in mid air and come out with a good color balance. I am starting to think about trading up soon into a newer model but I think I will stick with Nikon as I have nothing but good things to say about my camera except that the viewfinder is not as big as it could be. The viewfinder issue is much better on the D500. When shooting outdoors I mainly shoot film.

Agree. All the mirrorless cameras seem to be designed by phone users and not photographers. The ergonomics of a full body DSLR like the D500, 8x0 series, or D5 is one of the great joys of using them, everything is where you need it, it is comfortable in the hand, particularly with a grip, and balances well with serious lenses. I have tried to like mirrorless but none are convenient, and require way too much menu diving or sequences of button presses to accomplish what a single button or thumb wheel does on a full body camera. A typical situation, a friend who has a Sony a7rII and I shot the same event and modeling session and I got all the shots I needed with minimum work load with my D800. He missed all but the simplest scenes because spending so much time changing settings in menus. Fine if one has one setup for a session or event or goes full auto but that is not real world shooting. Tech specs on paper mean nothing if you miss the shots because the camera is not at your eye most of the time to make changes the scene requires. For vacation snap shots that might be fine but a cell phone can do that just fine. I have shoot a lot with a D500 and it is surely the best crop camera ever made and will exceed the skill set of 99% of shooters. I still like Fx for my subjects, but if I was doing birds in flight, autoracing or other sports, I would have a D500 now. I am pretty firm however in moving to the D850 and using the D800 as second camera in events. Or sell the D800 to finance a D500 for a companion to the D850. Frame rate has never been important to me but having the reach of Dx on my Fx lenses would come to good use.

Well, you done it now!! I was looking for a new camera to replace my decades old Fujifilm digi...my First-ever...thought I was doing the "right thing" to Skip the DSLR and go to Canon's EOS RP Mirrorless. But if I'm just going to do something similar to changing to CD's only to come back to spinning Vinyl.....especially from the standpoint of mirrorless's voracious power tendencies. So DSLR is NOT outgoing, outdated tech? WJ, 24 Feb 2021

I'm tossed between the D500 and the D7500. I currently run the workhorse D700 for work but I want something with decent 4k video for filming travel destinations. Then I thought about the A1000 for travel just because it's small and pocketable. Ugh so much to think about.

Jay McFarland While I think there will always be part of me that ‘wants’ the D500 I recently picked up a D7500 for taking action/sports shots of my boys. My EDC is still 75% X-E2 and 27mm. The D7500 is a very good body. It is smaller than I remember the D7xxx line being. I have a camera bag I got with a mirrorless camera purchase and the D7500 with the 35 or 50 1.8 fits in it.The AF-P lenses are much better than I expected. I picked up the P version of the 70-300 VR for $150 and the P version of the 18-55 for $60. I would never buy that 18-55 but was so impressed with the big zoom that for $60.. why not. One thing with the D7500 that doesn’t seem to get mentioned a lot is the metering.. same as the D500 and VERY good IMO.

Great VIdeo - As always! I'm going the other way, the weight of a D80, 70-200 L a couple of primes and my trusty 15-85mm in my camera bag is too much like hard work :-) D500 does look nice though!

Weirdly enough I actually enjoy shooting photos and videos with my Canon T3i more than my a6500. I use the a6500 for jobs because the image quality is obviously so much better but when I’m shooting just for fun I always want to grab the Canon. Maybe it’s because it’s what I started out shooting with, but I feel more connected to photography using a DSLR; it makes me want to go out and take photos. Plus it’s nice that the battery seemingly lasts forever 😆.
