Nikon D3s in 2019

Ойын-сауық

A video that I meant to make for a long time, but kept putting off because I didn't know how to do this camera justice. In the end, I decided to just speak from the heart and express why I absolutely love this camera, and why it is the absolute best camera that I have ever owned.

It’s true! I never thought that one day I will own D3s. I been shooting with D600 for a long time until D850 come out. I own two D850’s and I always thought there is no better output then those files from 45mpx sensors. Yes D850 is a great camera but…..Then I bought D4s and I couldn’t believe what 16mpx can deliver and after 6 months of shooting with D4s I bought D3s and I absolutely love this camera. I really think that D3s and D4s are one of the best cameras Nikon ever made. The feel, the ergonomics and image quality is just so good. I Love them both. Guys the build , the size, the weight is just great. We wont see this build anymore. The best of the best. The old good days. Im really curious what owners of cheap plastic consumers mirrorless small boxes will say about their cameras in 10-15 years time. Is just shame where camera industry is heading.

20:00 Newer camera tech is great, but at lower iso's ONLY since they are all chasing 24mp. The D3S will STILL smoke 90% of cameras past iso 800. The dynamic range is a massive factor, dxomarks test methods need analysing big time. While newer cameras can bring back more info in the shadows/highlights, it merely shifts midtones the way 'levels' does in photoshop, it doesnt magically pull data out of thin air. Most new sensors dont look organic at all when pushed/pulled past +50/-50. The main thing I have noticed with the flagships is colour range, there are way more tones of individual colours / red green and blue. I'm talking specifically D750 vs D3S - the D3S has so much more 'gamut' and separation between colours. You can mess around with HSL sliders all you want but if there isnt enough distinction between tones of red, for example, they get lumped together, and when you shift hue they all get shifted together. The only way I can describe it is like the D3S has an in-build HDR ability, within a single raw file, at least thats the way it feels. There is just more to work with, and the images that come out of it are way more realistic and less digital looking. 24mp is great, but once you go past 800 iso, zoom in 100%, the small details look mushy and the grain is larger whereas the D3S grain looks like fine sandpaper. Anyone who thinks 12mp is not enough resolution, think for a second, 12mp gives you 4200 pixels on the longest side (enough for A3 at 200dpi if you print), who needs more than that for sports/weddings? ISO 1600 with the D750 literally looks like an upscaled 12mp sensor, with very flat colours, it almost feels like a toy camera once you have used a D3S. No amount of editing will make a £2000 sensor look like a £5000 one. You cant pull the information/data from something that is not there, you can only stretch what data your sensor has captured so far (before it looks digital and cheap). I'm not justifying my purchase here, I just want people to know these comparison sites like dxomark don't test enough (my guess is their colour square chart needs WAY more tones) any camera can distinguish the ones they are testing with, its kinda pointless. The only thing i'd trust about the dxomark benchmarks are that these are the results from NOT tweaking your raw file much or at all, if thats you then buy based of their ratings. If you know anything about processing raws then consider other sources, because their 'dynamic range' and 'colour' ratings are VERY misleading.

Man, I was going to sell my D3 and D3s because I have D4s and D750, but your video convinced me to keep them... My love for Nikon that began with Nikon F5, which I still own, had somewhat faded when I started going into the digital world with Nikon D1x, then to D2x. I didn't think much of the crop sensor disadvantages, but that soon changed when I got my Nikon D3. Nikon D3 was not an upgrade from D1x and D2x. It was a whole new camera with whole new colors, sharpness, and contrast that are close to real film... So, my second love for Nikon began. Soon after my third love for Nikon began after purchasing Nano Crystal Coated lenses. The sharpness difference between 28-70mm f/2.8 to 24-70mm f/2.8 is like Nikon D2x to Nikon D3. You just can't ignore them because they are so profoundly and significantly different. When you get them you will notice right away. Now, my photography is migrating mostly to prime lenses because I truly fell in love with Nikon's f/1.4 Bokeh and its colors... I am planning to get three more prime lenses and that would be it for me... Nikon 35mm f/1.4, Nikon 58mm f/1.4, and lastly Nikon 200mm f/2. Then, I will be a real happy camper...

This is the best video I have seen on the D3/D3S camera by far! I bought a D3 in excellent shape last year for $650 CAD and the moment I held it I fell in love ...so beautifully balanced, buttons so convenient and not downsized like smaller models and therefore much easier to manage with fumbling fingers, and the round viewfinder (along with magnifying eyepiece i bought) is worlds better than the viewfinders on consumer model cameras including the D750, and D780. I love the photos it takes! I feel very lucky to have a D3 ...I am going to check your channel and I am hoping that since 2019 you have been able to buy another D3S. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings on this camera!

I use a D700 and D3! doing an indoor evening event this weekend in London! one feature I love about them is the lowlight iso performance, all controls on the outside! tough and great battery life!! 12mp is nice to deal with in post! plus megapixels is so hyped up these days! I have some fairly big canvas prints that look great!! I get annoyed with photographers who say you always need the latest and greatest :) I have owned modern stuff but found I don't need it!! touchscreen, bluetooth, wifi, video etc. nah :)

The D3s is still a legend in its own right the needs of a photographer haven’t changed in the last decade or so, just peoples expectations of what a box that absorbs light (a camera) can do. You shouldn’t struggle with a D3 let alone a D3s, if you’re not getting the shot with those it’s not the camera, it’s you. This mentality of constantly upgrading things is fine, and I understand wanting to buy a newer model and I do. But, don’t justify the purchase of a Sony A7R IV with “needs” because it’s simply not true, hand me a D3s and I’m like a pig in s**t 🙂

Love your thoughtful talks Skyler. It’s mid June 2024. I’ve had a D3s for about 3years. It’s a bit scruffy (pretty decent really) & has about a 135,000 shutter count. 10 days ago I bought 2nd D3s body. It’s boxed, in super nice condition, & has a shutter count only 37,000! It was a completely unplanned impulse purchase. I saw it for £440 U.K. & I just couldn’t resist buying it. 😍

I have a Nikon D3 and a D3X. The only one in the series I don't have is the D3S. Both my cameras are keepers, for different reasons. The D3 was a ground-breaking camera, and it's a classic. It is WELL capable of taking fabulous photos and I personally don't buy into all that "more megapixels, mirrorless, higher dynamic range" hype that tries to convince everyone that the camera they bought last year is no longer worthy! I hope to keep both (I have lately added a D4S!) and maybe I might just complete the line-up with a D3S too! Thanks for your video and a voice of reason! Anthony, in Ireland.

Last year I bought a D3 I always admired. A year before, a D700 I also admired, 2 years before that, a D300s and all started in 2010 with D200. Old Nikons are superior to the newest and "greatest" models. They was created when digital photography was matured and there was no video involved on the photo cameras. If you wanted a great video camera, you was going to Sony or Panasonic or whatever as a consumer or semi-pro. Now, our phones capture even 100MP photos and record 4K 60fps. Good photos are those who have a story, a texture and love put into them. No matter the medium, the artist/photographer/videographer will always find a way to create. Such creations are good to be done with tools like those old Nikons who never fail to deliver, who never stop working when you need them. Greetings from Greece and keep the D3s if you can, seems in mint condition that will be hard to find used in the future like this. Cheers!

I take delivery of my lightly used (60k) D3s tomorrow, March 2022. Its an early 50th birthday present to myself. Been a lifelong Nikon user, like you, not much into "upgrading" but have owned a number of excellent Nikon SLR's, all of which are still in my collection. I jumped at the D300 when if first came out and used it solid for 10 years, even the day I was in the store to buy the 300, I really really wanted the D3, couldn't stretch the budget. Years roll on, D300 earning me money, finally pull the trigger on a D850. But, something inside me still yearns for a pro body from the D3 era. Usual Saturday morning walking around in town, go past the only camera store left, they get some great trade in's. They inform me they were about to trade in a D3, D3s, D4, and a ton of glass and speedlights! Sure enough, the gear came in a couple weeks later, the D3 and D4 looked like they were dragged behind a truck on a gravel road...but the D3s, like new!! I pick it up in 12 hours from writing this. Going to also grab the SB910's (virtually unused) that came in and some of the glass. Suddenly I feel like I have been transported back in time to a very happy period in my life. I couldn't care less about technical specs, age of gear, modern upgrades bla bla. The color output of these old Nikons is truly amazing! Yes, my D850 is a studio workhorse, megapixels to burn, and I will own it forever, but the older generation processors worked a little different to the modern ones. Try going into the WB fine tune menu on your D3s, move the little box straight down into the magenta region and take a sunset photo with the camera set to cloudy WB......Its crotch melting good! Tomorrow will be the first time I have used a single digit D Nikon, going to be a long sleepless night :)

My D3 has 243 shutter clicks on this new shutter. Hope to have it a very long time… and you are correct, there’s just something special about these flagship model photos. I have the Nikon D700 aka The Legend, with only 9873 Shutter clicks. The photos are excellent. But again…. Although these claim to have the exact same sensor.. The D3 photos are just better.

The reason I bought my Nikon D3s is that I work on the sets of film, television and stage productions as a Stills Photographer so I really needed the D3s capability to get me usable images in very low light that I have no control of. At 15:15 you mention the video problems with the Nikon D3s. One issue I have is that video files are limited to only 5 minutes. I have worked as a DP and Cinematographer on some projects and used my D3s so I have to plan for those 5 minute long files. BTW, the headphone port is an output, not an input. My D3s is my main digital camera. My backup is a Nikon D70. I am considering picking up a used Nikon 810 for commercial work (products & portraits) where I have more megapixels available to me. I also have several Nikon film bodies, a fairly complete Mamiya RB-67 system and several 4x5" large format film cameras with lenses from 75mm to 360mm. Terry Thomas... the photographer Atlanta, Georgia USA PS Back in the day, I knew about Miranda cameras.

You'll love it, I'm sure. I had mentioned in this video that you'll only be disappointed with the D3s if you're buying it as a dedicated video camera. However, as a challenge to myself and as a final "goodbye" to my D3s before selling it, I used it to shoot my most recent video. I used only a vintage 35mm lens (made in 1959) and didn't do any type of color grading or anything else to modify the image. Yet, I think the video came out looking quite dreamy and nice 🙂

@@bigotonbrand Oh man, glass is hard to recommend without knowing your shooting style, preferences, or budget. But, for me personally, I would keep it light and versatile by carrying just two lenses (maaaybe three). For the two lens setup, I would get something wide. Really wide. 24mm would be the minimum, but preferably 20mm or wider. This would offer the ability to not only capture wide scenes with a lot going on, but it would allow you to compose your shots properly even in tight situations (small rooms, crowded areas, etc). Plus, you get the huge bonus of using the unique perspective to really get creative with your photos. The second lens would be a short telephoto. Something like an 85mm. Great for getting a little reach when you aren't as close, for isolating subjects from a crowd, for getting rid of the background when you want to focus on something or someone specific without being distracted by everything else that is going on, etc. If you don't mind having a 3rd lens on you, then I'd go with the trusty 35mm. It's the perfect middle man. Starting to get tight enough to isolate subjects while still being wide enough to allow the environment to tell a story.

Honestly, the Nikon D3s was a dream camera for me for a long time. It lived up to its hype, too. I think that if I could pick any camera in the world and money was no object, it would be the Leica M10-D (the M10 without the screen on the back, set up like a film camera). Being a true rangefinder, looking and working like a classic film camera, but giving me the benefits of digital RAW files... I think it would be pretty hard to beat that. Such a timeless, rare setup.

A couple of years ago, I finally picked up a used D3S, and although I don't even have a dream camera anymore (OK, maybe a Hasselblad Xpan or a Leica M3 with full Summicron glass) I shoot it every weekend - or I did, before all the sports events were cancelled due to this bogus "pandemic." The handling and the image quality of the D3S are spectacular by any measure. It's a classic, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it for any job.

@@TCookk Hmm, well, the D750 has several advantages that simply come down to it being newer. You are likely aware of those, since the D750 was (and is) a very popular and much discussed camera. In fact, if you aren't intimately familiar with the D3s, you might assume that it doesn't really have any advantages over the D750 due to it being 5 years older. However, the D3s actually has multiple advantages over the D750. Such as; -Faster top shutter speed (obviously an advantage for fast-moving subjects) -Higher frame rate (9fps burst vs 6.5fps) -Deeper buffer (45 continuous frames vs 15 at the same settings) -MUCH better build quality -Better weather sealing -Better battery life (4,200 shots vs 1,200, so 3.5x better) -Better low light performance -Better SNR at all ISO levels -Better tonal range -Better color sensitivity from ISO 400 and above -Better dynamic range from ISO 1,600 and above -Longer shutter life expectancy (300,000 vs 150,000) Other things that I personally view as advantages are more down to personal preference. But, if you are doing sports, action, wildlife, anything low-light, or photojournalism type of work, the D3s is likely a better option. If you need something smaller and lighter, want to use it for video on a regular basis, or plan on cropping a LOT on a majority of your photos, then the D750 is likely the better bet.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it or projecting, but this is EXACTLY the type of photography content I am interested in. It is different from 99% of the KZread photography content that I have seen. What do I mean? I am NOT at all interested in professional photographers. Obviously, they have a lot to offer, however, at the same time I get tired of hearing these people talking about, "a camera is just a tool, like a hammer or a chisel or whatever." Yes, perhaps in the most literal sense, however we all know that photography is 'different' from painting, drawing, or writing. I also have no interest in conventional, "gear reviews." Seen 100+. They're pretty much all the same. I have been looking for someone to talk about their emotional connection to a specific camera. HOW they came to it? WHY? What is it about THAT camera, over the 25 others out there? Your video here, is like two friends just sitting down in a coffee shop talking about cameras. Not 'photography' per se, but "cameras", but not so much as a review, just someone who loves cameras. Loved the story about how your dad still shoots with his old Olympus bodies. Part of my issue with conventional, "gear reviews" is that I am sick and tired all of these companies (auto, phone, camera, etc. etc.) attempting to put the masses on a constant upgrade path. Yes, if you're shooting professionally, I guess you "need" the latest and greatest. I just think with the overwhelming majority of shooters, it really wouldn't matter whether they used something that came out today OR something from 10 years ago. Photographers forget (or never knew or more likely, do not care), that one of Nikon's most iconic cameras, the F3, was in production from 1980 until 2001. That is amazing. It can't (and won't) ever be done like that again, but WOW! I'll land my plane now. Hope that you produce more content like this video and I too have 2 Nikon D3s bodies. They are the only digital bodies I have and, like your dad, I plan to use the hell out of them and not buy any other bodies in this lifetime. The D3s far exceeds my photographic abilities and I love the way it feels in my hand. Just as you mentioned, I am in love with quality craftsmanship, all things mechanical, and analog. Yes, I realize that the D3 is not mechanical or analog, however, the build quality of the D3(s) is also something that will NEVER be seen again in the camera world. Everything about it just speaks to quality and inspires confidence. Simply holding it in my hand, makes the horrors of this world melt away. Off to check out your Flickr.
