NIKON D3 VS D3X - PHOTO SHARE

It was a privilege to capture the amazing All Floyd on tour as they celebrate 50 years of 'Dark Side Of The Moon'
The D3X fell into my hands the day before the gig so it felt all the more exciting to be there!

Loved this post, especially as a huge a PF fan! Yes the D3X is not a low light champ. Back in the day when the D3 series were launched, the D3/D3s were (and are) the low light kings, with the D3s essentially a D3 on steroids. Then the D3X was launched, this camera was lauded at the time as being the camera with the best ever dynamic range and overall image quality, so it was quickly eaten up as the perfect studio camera (at ISO 100). It has since gone on to be a highly sought after classic, but not for low light situations.

These are some fabulous and well composed images Claire. There's just something about a (pro level) camera that can (still) produce beautiful photographs and while I'm sure it shows it's age here and there I'm still looking to pick one up. Nice work Claire.

I have the D3s and D3x and I think cameras from that era had the best build quality. Yes they were bricks but they had some sensual appeal too😎

Hi Claire, lovely pics. I've owned A D3, D3S and D4s and D5. All lovely cameras, the extra resolution from the D4s is noticeable, D4s is a low light monster, really probably the best. I preferred it to the Nikon D5. Also the D4s you can program the movie record button to act as ISO button so you don't need to fiddle with buttons on the back of the camera. D4s also has a superb selection of focus patterns in tracking mode. I still love the D3 as it's the original and looks by far the best camera of all but I'd go for the D4s for it's ability to do everything really well.

I'm happy to have discovered you and your videos. I had a D3s for a VERY short time. I found one with less than 3000 actuations on it at a local camera shop. I used for for about a month but the screen stopped working. I got a refund and picked up a D4s because they said they wouldn't repair the D3s. I just found out they DID repair my D3s and are now selling it again.....made me so mad. In terms of noise with the D3x, I'm wondering if a little Lightroom Denoise or something like Topaz Ai could save those images up to the quality of the D3s and you still get the extra sharpness of the sensor?

Hey! Thank you very much for your comment. I enjoyed reading it 😊 I cant believe they were selling your old camera on that is awful. I really don't understand dishonest people. Thank you for your comment about the noise. I actually love a bit of noise I think it is quite old school and atmospheric so sometimes I leave it in. I find when I edit on lightroom, they always export with more noise than how I edited them which can be a little frustrating... I have learned to allow for this and when I do reduce the noise I reduce it a bit extra but guessing isnt ideal. I dont always like the false smooth look you get from reducing noise.... Sometimes I like a little grit! Especially for gig shots.

I absolutely didn't need it but for the common good I got a D3x. Verry low shuttercount and in great shape. Those where the bricks from back then. Build to survive anything. Well... almost anything😊

ROFL Yes, Claire the 3X is for super bright stuff. I will say, the color sci of the 3X is the best of the Nikon bodies I've experienced. When it comes to low light, I'm packin' my 700 and 4S. I want to add a 3S to complete my collection. Don't go 6, it's shite. Go 850 if you want it all. I seldom shoot with it, nobody asks for ginormous prints. But if you're just keeping it to the pro bodies, 4S. She's...I can't even think of a term, The Absolute.

A cheat I used on my old D3s was to lower the resolution on the final export from 12mp to 10mp for the biggest size. Exporting at 2mp or 1mp or 1080p, noise just disappears when you upload to the Internet.

Hi Claire, I really think if you get a good used D4s your mind will be blown...only if you want to stay with 1 digit pro grip bodies, if not then the holy grail of Nikon is D850

I ❤ the images from my D3X, but I see it as my studio/strobe & sunny events camera. D3S is my general natural light camera. The D3S looks fabulous with strobe too. I recently tried a beautiful clean, low count D4S (hoping it would be the holy grail combination of more resolution AND fabulous colour.) However, it turned out I just did NOT like the D4S colours & look in studio as much as the D3X & D3S so I reluctantly retuned it. Try stuff for yourself BEFORE you buy - as everyone’s tastes are different. I have NOT tried D5 or D6 so no thoughts on those (except they are still expensive.)

@@clairesschoolofphotography1767 Update: I swapped that D4s for a nice used Z6 body (also £850 from Park Cameras.) The Z6 is nice and does some things that the D3S & D3X won't do, & I will keep it, but I still prefer shooting with the D3 bodies and the look of their images SOOC. It's all personal taste. Good Luck Claire.

The D6 has the best low light performance you're going to get currently of any camera. I'd just invest in faster glass at this point. Sigma has both the 18-35 and 50-100 f/1.8 lenses for F mount. They also can adapt to the Z mount and other systems. Bodies D6 ($4k) D5 ($1k) D4s ($700) Lenses Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 $600 - $1000 Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 $500 - $700 Best logical choice is the D5 and both lenses. The D6 advantage over the D5 is autofocus. I still think while the D6 is great, it was designed to be a loss leader to sell more D5 back stock imo.

Still have D3s with D4 and D800... The process of taking picture is more simple with D3s - just aim ant press the shutter. The other way - D4 and D800 - the process is more exciting and interesting, more controls better review, LV. And when it comes to processing - the only thing differs - is resolution and some times DR (but you can extra almost 3 EV from the highlights of D3s!). And may be there is something special about D3s - quality and speed, very fas processing of files. And, using mother technology and AI - you may boost up resolution without almost any loss. And older cheaper lenses resolve better with D3 series, and newer lenses - better with high megapixel bodies. For all those cameras - 6400 or 12800 iso - is standard situation... And regular client does not care if the photo has 12 mpx or more...

Hello mate 😊 Still gassing eh? 😅 I have to say, the D6 was a huge disappointment when it came out. Not a lot different from the D5. If I were in your shoes, I'd consider the D4s or the D850. I've seen many a D850 vs Z9 comparison videos, especially in low light and high ISO usage. And the difference is negligible. The D4s and D850 you could pick up from as little as £1200.
