Still use my original Z6 in 2024. The external NLOG grades just as well as anything out there, and even the internal FLAT profile is not too bad when graded in Davinci.

In My countrys Nikon was expensive and never understamated, just a luxury

I have mixed feelings, having owned Nikon DSLRs and a RED Komodo, I can honestly say...I am worried that RED will stripped down for tech (global shutter and R3D RAW) and slowly phased out. I HOPE they incorporate the RED sensor and color science into a beautiful hybrid body, with superior Nikon cinema glass, but I feel like it will probably go the way of Apple whenever they buy tech - strip the best parts and slowly phase out the smaller brand. Maybe I'll hang onto my OG Komodo forever as my last RED camera :(

Minolta Alpha lives on in Sony's hands.If RED is really having problems would it not be better for the innovations to live on in a storied Camera manufacturers hands? I think RED is fine.

I own the Nikon D5500 and I am pleased for Nikon. Also they make great lenses. I am also want to see what Nikon does with the Nikon Z5 Mark 2

Perhaps RED avoided selling to Canon because they would get absorbed. Within the Nikon company, RED has it's own very distinct home.

I think this is great news! Also, the Z mount has a shorter flange depth. So its more adaptable than the RF mount.

Long time Nikon shooter and this news made my not just day but year! I love it and hope it helps put Nikon on top again and shuts up the Nikon haters.

I actually would prefer Nikon imaging over Red's. I've never fully loved their image especially compared to ARRI. I own a RED Gemini btw.

The Gemina is outstanding and punches up to the Arri’s most expensive cameras… I own both.

You could see that coming after the legal dispute between the two was so quietly and suddenly resolved.

Great vid, smart observations.

I don't think Cannon saw enough value or innovation in RED. That is probably why they passed. But good for Nikon. They really need help in their cinema department. So this is probably a good step for both of them.

Nikon don’t have a cinema lineup. Which is why they’ve been behind in video up until the Z9/Z8.

I hope Nikon ports the Raptor X Global Shutter sensors to their own cameras.

Braw is better than Prores by far .i would put Braw against R3D in close competition.

Nikon shooter since '84...nothing beats great glass...& they just build a bridge from the Z9 to Hollywood in one slick move.

I have done a few acquisitions in my previous life. Red would have been far more valuable to Nikon than Sony and Canon, and therefore would have been more willing to pay more for Red. That’s the short answer why Sony and Canon didn’t buy Red without going into lots of detail.

To me it's wasn't, "Hey let's be friends" as a result of the lawsuit... I think it was Nikon saying, "F it, we'll just buy out 100% of your company then" and RED maybe wasn't doing as well as people thought financially, since they are private and have had some major missteps... i.e. the Hydrogen Phone, Jinni Tech REDMAG debacle, etc.

Z6 is nice high ISO camera for low light.

Nikon didn’t win the lawsuit… they negotiated a license with Red. I guess it makes more sense to just buy Red than to pay for the license. Around the time when the lawsuits were happening, Jarred Land mentioned the two companies were in talks and it was all part of negotiations. He even posted pictures on Instagram of him at Nikon HQ. It seems probable that Canon will need to remove internal Raw from their cameras going forward, hopefully they have a deal that last many years so that doesn’t need to happen… but the jury is out on that one.

I think for canon it was a no as they are already established in the cinema line area. Ok, market shares and market leadership could be something. I think in last colabs red took more out of canon than the other way around, let’s see how Nikon is taking on red and how they work together. Let’s see and wait, one thing it is for sure: there are exciting times ahead. Cheers

@@davidaltizer they are sort of the introverts in the business it seems and I guess business wise it’s just not their thing. Missed opportunity for sure.

I think the sale is a good thing. I don’t think Nikon will put all of Red’s tech in a Nikon body because you have to have a way of differentiation between the consumer and professional lines, other wise why would anyone spend the money. Canon and Sony do this. I also don’t think Nikon would do anything stupid like change Reds name, because people are familiar with the Red name, just like when DJI bought Hasselblad. What I’m excited about is the possibility of Nikon consumer cameras getting a hold of that Global shutter technology and hopefully stop relying on Sony’s sensors. This which would make Nikon as independent as Canon and Sony for sensors. Nikon will be able to make a boat load of cash with Reds patents and licensing fees to Canon, Sony, Fuji and others, just like Red was doing before. Nikon also doesn’t have to develop a cinema line in the professional space because they have hit the ground running. I do see a Nikon z mount or adapter as such coming. I don’t think that Nikon should be short sited by cutting off Canon Lens RF owners from Red and certainly not PL mount because it brings these existing owners back to the table for future purchases, keeping them in the Red family.

I'm not selling my Blackmagic FF, but I might consider switching from Sony. I have not liked Sony ever since they switched to CF Express Type A memory card. 64gb, 120gb, wtf. I'm using 512gb, and 1TB cards CF Express Type B and I'm not going back. It's like Apple with their lightning connector, good thing that is a thing of the past.

I've always thought Nikon was underrated in video. ProRes RAW was first introduced in the Z6. I definitely think it's still going to be a Canon stuff. Nikon doesn't make sensors and neither does RED. So I assume they'll continue to work as a separate entity.

If Nikon makes prosumer mirrorless cameras with R3D I'm switching to Nikon.

Give me a Z6III with compressed RAW video & Z8/9 autofocus.

@@davidaltizer In my country it has always been a respected and preferred brand by professionals. In fact it is more expensive than Canon and Sony... it could have had less sales but it was respected. Sony only gained respect and became the leading brand with the sony a7iii with many difficulties. Canon and Nikon are still prefered by old photographers.

Sony's A7 came out a little over 10 years ago and shook up the camera world as it moved hybrid. 10 years later as I kept shaking my head at Nikon for sleeping at the wheel they do this! The Z8/9 revealed their newer video heavy trajectory but at a premium price. This acquisition will hopefully trickle down to the sub $2500-3000 bodies. Or not, maybe they'll just mess it up worse. We'll see.

I would love Z mount so I don’t have to carry two sets of lenses around but if they could get Nikon’s autofocus into a RED camera, that would be awesome.

Nikon didn't win that lawsuit, it was settled with Nikon buying licensing from RED. Obviously there may have been "deeper" agreements made? LOL! (Love your stuff btw!)

REd, you would have been better off letting Canon take over. I doubt they dropped the ball because by the time Nikon ends up with 245 Red/Nikon recalls, they will get to take it over anyway. I find it hilarious when Nikon folks talk about their great glass when the cameras keep being recalled.That's like me saying my Rane mixer sounds so great yet it breaks down 5 times a year. if I get a Nikon I will get one NEVER recalled and reliable, like the D850 , Zf, and Z9...I used a few Nikons before they started with the poor quality control here and there...Canon is not worried about Nikon, neither is SONY..Next subject...

What if Nikon bought RED just to kill it because they tried to sue Nikon?

Here is why Nikon won't licence internal compressed RAW in the near future to competitors and why they had a real shot with their lawsuit against RED and coming to an agreement in contrary to Apple, Sony and others: Nikon had an entirely different lawsuit approach as shown in the video below. And they surely have tangible evidence for it, which other competitors don't have. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZOMlJd_opWxj7A.html BUT if Nikon had won the lawsuit instead of the joint dismissal and agreement with RED in 2023, RED would have lost their patent. Which wouldn't have been just a big loss for RED but a loss for Nikon too. Because not just Nikon would have benefitted from a "free" patent, even more so Nikon's competitors, who already have a good grasp in the video/cinema industry. So with their joint dismissal of the lawsuit and their agreement the important patent still stays intact. And now RED and Nikon can benefit from each other without other competitors benefitting from the patent.

Global shutter tech !!

ARRI color science is the still best. I always thought it was 1) ARRI 2) Sony and 3) RED. I think now it might be tied for 2nd or 1A. We'll see..time will tell. Red has a reputation for being unreliable so it might make sense to make a new Nikon Cinema camera. I think RED makes too many cameras in a short period of time. As a RED owner, I have flirted with buying a Komodo only to find out a newer one comes out the following year. Can you imagine all those people who spent thousands of dollars on Raptor & Komodo X. And now, there will be a new camera to come. When you sell a camera and buy a new one you lose money.

Not being rude, why are you using low quality Sony camcorder when I know you have good gear? It's just hard to watch that's all. don't do it again 🙂

This comes as a real shock to me...Nikon has none of my mind share in the digital video space so I would have expected, at the least a company like Canon or Blackmagic to be the more likely purchaser. Although Canon probably couldn't deal with the aggressive product update schedules. Actually, for me, Apple would have been the most welcome purchaser as a demonstration that the company is still interested in the professional cinema marketplace

Why would cannon buy RED? They already has a great cinema line up.

Canon's RAW is the Honda Civic of video RAW codecs. It is not even in the same league as the 16-bit RAW coming off the Raptor.

@@ktcool4660 Not when you are editing compressed RAW with 17 stops of dynamic range. There is a reason people lust over and want R3D. It is simply better in every way to what canon offers at the moment in both workflow and quality.
