Just bought this lens and it is impressive. The VR is especially good. Tried a few handheld shots with a low shutter speed to compare with/without VR. Quite a difference. The lens pulls in to focus and hold it much quicker with VR.

Yes, the internal focus motor in the lens will work with all DX cameras. The D5100 like most DX camera do not have a focus motor in the actual camera body. The motor is instead in the AFS lenses. (The D7000 and D7100 however does also have focus motor in their camera bodies.)

@yapee- yes , I bought the Nikon 55-300mm lens and it is excellent. I have already taken some respectable shots. The movie mode is very good quality which is a bonus!

its designed for outdoors. For indoors you would use a single focal lens, say a 35mm and a g series if you can manage it. This would be better suited to low light indoor situations.

Yes, you can!

if you are serious about getting a telephoto lens then i think you should get this. if youre onley going to use it once in awhile then get the 200mm and use the rest of the money on a good 35mm prime

No,. I have the 3100 with the said lens and it works great and good indoors 3-5 ft. and outside 200-300 ft. is a fair focal lenght for a descent clear photo, get it you will be happy and it is not expensive.

Yes, it's a DX lens meaning it's designed for APS C (Crop Sensor) cameras like D3000, D5000 (your camera) and D7000 series

You own a D800? Don't believe a word off it. As you might've seen this is a DX lens and a D800 is a full frame.

1:16 i wanted to shoot a photo EXACTLY like this one with my awful point and shoot camera, but i just couldn't get close enough. That's why i want to buy a DSLR with interchangable lenses.

It's n-eye-kon only in the US. Everywhere else, it's ni-kon.

At 300 mm it is almost to soft on birds and ducks. i know , I owned one. About 200 to 250mm it isn't bad.

I have this lens. Works fine for photos, but is worthless for videos. You can hear the autofocus motor in the videos. I went back and tried 2 more of the lens at the photo shop and they all make the same noise. The clicking noise is apparent when I was videoing a train.

buy nikkor glass it is the best for Nikon cameras. I have tried the less expensive glass and it has pros and cons like anything!

True, the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 is a lot better. But it's also 1000 euros. This Nikkor lens costs only about 270 euros. So for me, a broke student, the choice is pretty easy.

Is this a review or a Nikon commercial? Fail.

The audio of the intro/ending should be normalized with the voice of the narrator to avoid damage to some sensitive ears...
