I'm just a simple amateur that likes to take pictures.. I absolutely love my 18-300 on my D5600.. My eyes aren't that good so pin-sharpness isn't that important to me so i have only the one lens.. but i can use it in a WHOLE bunch of different scenarios.. for someone who takes personal pictures, in my opinion, its a great lens

Nikon’s 18-300 f/3.5-6.3 (not the older, heavier f/3.5-5.6) is a great option when you want to travel light with just one lens. It is the same exact size as their 18-140 kit lens but with the extra reach to 300mm/450mm crop. We’ve owned two dozen Nikon lenses over the past seven years along with two full frame bodies but when jumping on a plane for a vacation the D7100+18-300 is what we bring with us.

Hi, do you know if the 18-300 has better image quality than the 18-140 kit lens? I currently use the 18-140 and I'm looking for something better

I use the 18-300 on a D7200 and have had great shots over two years. Have other lens but this is the all rounder lens to have.

Another great vid. Thanks for sharing. I have various lenses in my kit but I too bought an all in one lens for those holidays / days out when you don't want to be lugging everything around. I purchased the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD which exceeded expectations and would recommend to anyone looking for a lens in this range. (Furthermore here in the UK there is a £180 -£200 difference between the Tamron and the Nikon version.)

Hi Matt, Thank you for this review. I recently bought a Nikon 18-300mm f3.5-5.6 and I was wondering if there is a video about it on how to make best use of it. I am new to the hobby of photography, I use a Nikon D7100 coupled with a 50mm 1.4g and the 18-300mm which I mentioned above. Thank you. Regards, RB7R

been using the 18-300 on a D3300 a few years now. the image is quite good, and since most of my images are mostly for whatsapp/instagram/facebook the image sharpness isn't an issue. a bit soft on the long end. but acceptable with a little post process. Prints on photo paper no bigger than a letter size paper so sharpness isn't an issue (used the Canon G2000 cheap inks and alot of pictures output before needing refill lol)

I’ve owned the Sigma briefly (Amazon’s a great place for trying out gear 😉) and filled the bill for a great walk around at the EAA Air Adventure in Oshkosh, WI. At $399, an excellent lens. IQ was quite good overall and you don’t buy a lens like that for great IQ. Build quality is also quite good, looks very “modern” and for many casual shooters would make a excellent all arounder. But I am a pixel peeper and (of course) can’t stand up to the separates like my Sigma 18-50 2.8 (thanks Matt!) and 18-35 1.8 nor my telephotos.

Thanks for this review. I am about to switch my D90 to D500 (after watching some of your videos I decided to get D500 over D750 or D7500). I wanted to exchange my old Sigma 28-300 (slow, have and no VR) and Nikkor 18-55 into one lens (a lot of walking around with my kids: parks, ZOOs...). After this video I'm convinced this might be best option for me right and and in time get some primes (start with 35). Thanks again.

I own both and am happy with both. I recently took the Tamron on safari and produced some spectacular photos. I’m selling the Nikon because I don’t think I will use it now. That said Matt’s comment is spot on ; I still use primes in certain situations.

Hey all. I’m a beginner photographer trying to improve. I’ve done a couple of anniversary party shoots, a maternity shoot, an engagement shoot and a couple of portraits. I’ve heard the horror stories about trying to do some of these events on one camera without a backup and currently Im saving up (and almost there!) for a D7200 because of the dual SD cards and a few other features I believe will help me overall. My question is: should I sell my d3400 to get another D7200? Or is the d3400 suitable as a backup camera? Also, I thought I’d point out that I believe the camera body is the only thing left for me to upgrade. Right now I own the 17-50 Sigma 2.8, the 24-120 F4 Nikon, the 35mm 1.8 and the Samyang Fisheye 12mm 2.8. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Keep the D3400 as backup and consider upgrading glass or lighting gear before buying another body. Two possible adds would be Nikon 85 1.8G for portraits and/or Tamron 70-200 DiVC (previous to G2 for lower price and comparable optics).

Get the D7200as it is a great all round camera and you can new ones for a fair price. The D700 and D3's will mostly be used with a fair shutter count and unless your buying from a known good source why take the chance when you can get a 7200. Good Luck.

This is a crop sensor lens, not full frame. Since it was made for a crop sensor, you don’t apply the crop factor multiplier to the focal length. It is a true 18 300.

Not in my opinion. Image quality across all focal length is a bit better on your 18-140. The bigger is the range in a lens, the more are the compromises. If you want a longer reach you may consider the great inexpensive great sharpness new 70-300 af-p DX or a 150mm-something. my two cents

  • @dsu2002

    @dsu2002

D5300 is a 24MP body. If you are looking for quality, 18-300mm is a poor choice. If you want only the zoom range, then it is doable. But for one using primes, it is really a poor choice. 18-140mm is as good an walkaround lens you can get. If you want quality, you will have to settle for primes or zooms with lesser ranges. Slightly sharper than 18-140mm is the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM at a modest price of $370. The sharpest zooms are the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 DC HSM Art @$800 and the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 DC HSM Art @$1,100 (both without stabilization).

Take a look at the full frame version of the Nikon 70-300mm, they are around $500 U.S. and are excellent, plus they have a true ring motor for the af so no plastic gears to break and they focus internally so if you want to use a circular polarizer it is no problem

The Nikon 18-300mm is an "OK" lens, but at 300mm the images aren't sharp there's vignetting if you take pics with a solid background. My old 70-210 mm takes sharper photos, and there's no vignetting.

I'm just a total beginner in photography using using one of the cheapest entry level camera on market D 3400 and i have one prime lens wich is 50mm 1.8g for portraits fotos (Great lens for me) plus for general photos I still using my kit lens 18-55mm VR so let's say I'm looking for some upgrade on this one. Now that 18-300mm sound like good lens to go but I have a bit different problem and I'm wondering if u can give me your opinion on that since you are a big fan of Nikon. So majority of professional photographers that I follow on you tube or other platforms last time switching to mirorless Sony camera and as soon as I'll improve my photography I would like to upgrade my camera body and I start thinking if there is a point to keep spending money for nikon in general. Since I value your opinion maybe you can give me and other beginner photographer your opinion on that. Lenses are quite expensive and they becoming useless after you change your body to different mark. So where is the future for people who just start they journey Nikon or Sony mirror less???

LORD_VACO _ it depends on what you want basically, I prefer Nikon DSLR's over anything, to me the Sony body's are too small especially if you were to mount a huge wildlife lens on it and I prefer an optical viewfinder over an electronic viewfinder plus Sony has a limited range of native lenses so you always are using an adapter

@LORD_VACO_, I agree with bassangler73. BTW D3400 has one of the best sensor among DX bodies - you will not get a sharper picture (but maybe more bells and whistles) by upgrading to another DX body (however if you can afford it, a full-frame body like the D750 will give better results).

A totally undependable review. He does not mention what body - how many MP body he is using. For 12MP (or even 16MP) older bodies it is ok. For newer 24MP bodies, 18-140mm f3.5-5.6 ED VR is an acceptable walkaround, for it is relatively sharper than the older kit lenses. But 18-300mm is a relatively crappy lens on 24MP bodies, in the terms of one reviewer, "at 300mm end" "looks like a digital zoom from a pocket camera". It is comparatively decent at 70mm, but that is about it! People looking for quality should look elsewhere.
