Studying German as my high school foreign language and Russian as my undergrad foreign language enhanced the appreciation I already had for the music of both countries.

to Uusikaarlepyy The melody is Russian, but the song was not translated, an American Gene Raskin wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" this is not a translation from the Russian song "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" which means "By a long road" or "along a long road" The song in Russian Дорогой длинною, was written by Boris Fomin in the early 1900's with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. Mary Hopkin had the biggest and best known hit with this song. maryhopkindotnet

The lyrics to this song were written by an American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and recorded it first) he used the melody only, it is not a translation from the Russian song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" "Дорогой длинною" which means "By a long road", which was written by Boris Fomin with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. the words have no similarity whatsoever

This is a great version, I love it... the music is traditional the lyrics for Dorogoi Dlinnoyu are competely different to the 1960's hit by "Mary Hopkin" The English lyrics for this were written by Gene Raskin

The song being sung here is NOT "those were the days" it's Дорогой длинною ("Dorogoy dlinnoyu"), it was written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii. THis song has only the melody in common the lyrics for "Days..." was written by Gene Raskin

Great performance! Awesome!! Yes, this is a melody of Russian an troika bells well fit this song. How about Mary Hopkin? I wonder if Mary had not her northern taste, the TWTD did not make a great world-wide hit... Thanks a lot for this. Regards, Tommy This is my 79th TWTD in my playlist.

isnt' this "Those were the days" in English? I always thought this is an English folk song. So it is originally a Russian song? interesting!

По-моему лучший концерт Баскова. (2001 год - Кремль "Шедевры ушедшего века") Потом скатился в попсу, голос тоже испортил и сам... Обидно. Талант был большой. А вот им правильно распорядиться оказалось ему не под силу.
