Niki had a bad start from the pole and was worrying about Regazzoni who took the lead, so had to try hard to overtake Scheckter as soon as possible (nordkurve is the last chance to overtake in the next 7 minutes, unless the guy in front of you make a mistake somewhere along the track). Scheckter in turn made things even harder forcing Niki almost on the grass. It must be said that after this Lauda made less than one handful of mistakes in the next 11 years.

Questo filmato saltò fuori la prima volta nella trasmissione "Sfide". Inizialmente pareva una tipica ripresa da diretta tv ma poi....scoprì che il Gp di Germania del 1974 non fu coperto dalla tv tedesca.

Lauda himself declared afterwards that he had one wheel changed after the formation lap (the tire was losing air). This tire was cold unlike the other three. Upon approach of the Nordkurve, he forgot about it when he attacked Scheckter. The cold tire blocked upon braking and sent him to the right, into the path of the Tyrrell and the barriers.

That is very true! He led the British GP, the Monaco GP, South African GP, Canadian GP, Italian GP in 1974 and it was usually some sort of car failure but also the occasional mistake that cost him a win. He could easily have been Champion in 1974 but for lots of misfortune. He should have won in 1976 too but for his accident at the Nurburgring. So yes he was the fastest driver of that era before the Lotus 79 came along.
