@@SL-pq2qx im a month late but basically it's revealed in the short film that they were already broken up by this point. the girl texting him is someone he's friends/maybe hooking up with, but didn't tell nicole about. so no, he didn't cheat, but they both fell into old patterns of being lovey-dovey with each other and when the other girl texted, it kind of shattered that bubble of "the way it was before", hope this helps :)

2:36 when he goes to meet his new friends she clearly doesn't know and leaves her behind instead of taking her along and introducing her... oh man. that FEELING.

if there's anything i will always adore niki for, it's her lyrics. they manage to be figurative and fluid enough to read like a poem, while also raw and direct enough to make you feel every twist and turn of her heartstrings as if they were your own. her lyrics are so personal and are always delivered in a way that gets you to understand her story. super excited for the new album!!!

i genuinely did not feel like i was watching a music video, i felt like someone recorded her actual life and these were her memories. the song went so well w the video it was so powerful

I know this is supposedly about a failed long-distance relationship. But somehow i relate to this song as two separated lovers reuniting after a bad breakup, maybe for a quick catch up or try to see if things could work out again, “holding hands as not quite friends but not quite lovers,” “who you dated as soon as i left,” “we could’ve had that and so much more,” idk thats just how i interpret the song. i think this is exactly what the song is about! It connects with High School in Jakarta and Oceans & Engines. It seems the first 2 years together didn't work out, and they were apart for 1 year. "Since we ended it, had a year to grow into the girl you always wanted " but she decided to give it another chance, and it turns out it's just not gonna work. So you were right on the money!

So intimate yet feel so far. Feels like a college story but this kind of experience takes an adult to process well. What a song, what a video. Thank you for this!

How crazy that the whole song almost is the situation Im in. After Long distance throughout 2yrs of pandemic. Everything was so fine virtually but just doesn’t seems to be exact what I thought it would be after me and my bf reunite right here right now in Bali after a long flight. Lirik dalam lagu² yg di nyanyikan niki tidak pernah gagal untuk menceritakan suasana yang related to much people. Me too.. makna lagu ini sangat dalam. Bagaimana suasana yang semakin hari semakin canggung. Hanya karna menyayangkan hubungan yg sudah terlanjur berjalan lama menjadi alasan utama untuk memaksa terus bersama. Setelah LDR kemudian bertemu kembali semua menjadi sangat berbeda. Dia sudah sibuk dgn dunia dan teman baru nya. What I love about Niki's latest songs, "Every Summer Time", "Split", and this one remind me of bittersweet cinematic experiences. Like "La La Land" or studio Ghibli movies like "From up on Poppy Hill". Truly Niki your tracks have become absolute masterpieces. Split especially is the song I relate to the most, albeit in a different way. Alot better than most of the popular music I hear too much on the radio these days. Thank you Niki for your wonderful music in these hard times.

The writing emphasizes story and intricate details over melodicism and falling on beat. These kinds of songs are not that common and are usually crafted more to tell a story with great detail and accuracy than to be a "good and catchy" song. Which is why I appreciate NIKI a lot because this road is not commonly walked on, especially by young, up-and-coming artists. It usually takes an "established" career to express this kind of artistry.

We spent college years together for almost 2 years and when I graduated i had to go back to my hometown and that's when we have to breakup. Idk how many times we go back together, i dont count it anymore. And last week we broke up again after 6 months start talking again in long distance relationship. But everything just doesn't seem right anymore even if we were still together now.
