Last August I was in love with an American boy who came to my country as an exchange student. It was love at first sight. I was too shy and it took 2 months to go out with him, only to know that he also liked me from the start. I fell so hard and so did he. Head over heals. We didn't officially date bc we knew he's leaving soon, but instead we agreed that we should make the most of time left we had. We saw each other almost every day, going to a fireworks festival, theater, a beautiful hill to see the sunset and so on... Nobody has never made me feel this happy. Really. On one sunny day in August, he left to the US. We'd been talking and texting for quite a while since then, but 2 days ago he told me he couldn't keep on going any longer bc it's too tough to be separated and wanting each other this hard. ...yes I understand his feeling. We made a mutual decision to be back to friends and gonna check up on each other sometimes. I've known this song since the day it came out, but it has never hit me this hard. We actually went to a beach by car and I said "get in the car" in that morning. Now I cannot hold tears when listening to this song. Sometimes life circumstances don't let us be together, but now I wish him nothing but the success for the future. And I'm greatful for the purest memory I have ever had and everything he did for me. One day I want to work in the US and he said he wanna come back to Japan for grad school, I still hope our love comes back.

EDIT: I have made peace with the past and closed that chapter of my life. I have cried all I needed to cry and accept that the answer is to enjoy the present. 2011 is not 2024, and what is now is now I cry nonstop whenever I hear this song. Mine wasn't August, but March. Every lyric here hit my heart, happened in my August/March story. I tried to change for the better for him, cancelled plans for him, hoped we'd meet at school and hang out at home and be twisted in bedsheets. Wishing I could write my name on his back. Thought I had him but chose to be friends. I will forever be in lost in the memories of August/March even if he never will become mine. It has been 12 years since that love story. I've never gotten over it, just stacked it in my subconscious. Whenever I hear this song I remember it all vividly, and cry. So many questions left unanswered. It's still a memory I cherish, because I knew I LOVED truly.

And when she thought she finally had the chance (“Back when I was living for the hope of it all”) she didn’t want to let it go. She fought for her love even though she probably knew that James was dating Betty. Despite that, she was hoping that James would be hers finally because she’s been aching and loving him for a long time already. So maybe it’s an unrequited love for her in the beginning but when James finally came to her (cheating), she couldn’t really do anything except let herself fall, and take the chance.

Back when we were still changin for the better wanting was enough - "Falling in love with my best friend was like finding a missing piece of my heart that I never knew was lost." 💜

Looking back, I'd say that this is the strongest song in all of folklore. Not the best metaphorically or lyrically, but the feeling of just being abandoned and regarded as a mere 'summer thing' punches the guts in every listen.

@@sorrow3573 I think you should be awe of the fact that you A) Cared deeply about your friend, enough so you put her above yourself B) You are able to admire/like someone without needing to possess them. You never know what the future will hold. My unsolicited advice (as a 24 year old still trying to figure this love thing out) to you is: Take that leap of faith and ask him out. I know its tricky because of your friend, but she's not a true friend if you cannot openly share and let her know how you feel. Even if he says no, and he might, you put yourself out there and showed courage. Don't be the kind of person that looks back in regret for all the things you didn't do or didn't say. I had a driving trip with my boss daughter from Florida, Georgia,south and North Carolina then back to Georgia, Alabama,Mississippi,New Orleans, Texas,New Mexico,Arizona and California our destination. I just can’t get over the way she sings, and the beautiful poetry of, the lines “Back when we were still changing for the better, wanting was enough. For me it was enough to live for the hope of it all.” It’s just so beautiful and well thought out! Also, thought I should mention that I was once an “august girl” who fell hard for a guy that had no intention of ever committing to me in a serious way. I let myself get led on for over a year (cringe) and it wrecked me. But eventually I learned to be okay with myself even without a boy in my life, and after several months of blissful singleness, I met a man who would one day become my husband - who had no hesitation in committing himself to me ❤️

People don't realize how heartbreaking this song is.😭

This song reminds me of my first breakup. I used to listen to it a lot when it happened. It was extremely tough for me. This song helped me feel my feelings instead of suppress them. It's an amazing song.

Taylor’s music is awesome and this album is amazing. I can’t wait for The Tortured Poets Department cause I’m getting Folklore vibes from it 🤍

I really like the perspective Taylor has here. Instead of making this character the villain she's allowing her to tell her side of the story. She's not innocent but she didn't seduce James or force him to cheat. That narrative only really happens in movies and it's just a way of excusing men for their behavior. The same way women in film only cheat because their s.o. is abusive. I also love how Betty dosen't bash her ❤ she holds James accountable

I'm primarily a prog rock, hard rock, classical and jazz guy (and a music major in college). I liked some of Taylor Swift's early material but lost interest when she started teaming up with rappers. I don't think I've listened to any of her songs in the last decade. But I discovered this song today purely by accident and had no idea it was hers. It sounds a little like a 90s alternative pop band (think The Cranberries or someone like that). I have to say this is an excellent song. Great melody, mature and achingly painful lyrics about hopefulness that never comes to fruition in a relationship, and a really nice vocal. And the way she uses that second inversion F Major chord for the melody in "I can see us lost in the memory, August slipped away into a moment in time" is simple but really catchy & effective. Great songwriting and a great performance IMHO.

This is literally me rn. I really liked this guy and it was the first time I actually talked to the person I liked and had their number. I thought he liked me back and that the feeling was mutual, but I’ve been mistaken. I found out today that he had been dating another girl and broke up with her a few days ago… Right away I knew I had to listen to Taylor to feel better as her lyrics are so relatable.

3 years ago I knew nothing about Taylor, I wasn't even sure that she is a musician (I'm from Russia). Since then her music became the biggest passion of my life. I'm excited for you on your Tay journey. This woman created an entire lore around her songs and herself. So fasten your sit belts and enjoy your ride. P.S.
