I just subscribed also... this is what I enjoy about watching these "reaction" vids. Yourself along with all the other young people doing this type of thing is bringing a service to a couple of decades worth of really great music... and gathering a whole new generation of young people being interested (new fans) in the music of the past that it really needed. I tip my cap to the fans in Europe, Asia, Central, and South America. All of you know how to do the live concerts as fans. Total a*s-kickery. I remember when the fans in the US did that but touring is altogether dead here... and it sucks horribly. That's the sharp side of the internet. Bands don't have to tour to support their material... it's all on the net in a few seconds. Skill of the band's members has taken a huge dive. They don't have to get up on stage and perform in front of 15-20 thousand fans every other night so there's no need to better themselves at their craft (when was the last time you heard a solo of anything and a song lasting more than three minutes? ) Ridiculous...

This song is was written by Tuomas Holopainen after what happend to Nightwish in 2005. He felt like his lifework, Nightwish was going down the drain, and the whole world hated and blamed him for what happend with the singer Tarja Turunen. This song is full of emotions, hate, pain, sorrow, death, life, love, everything you can feel, it is like a musical play. I cry everytime I hear it. Listen to it with the lyrics, they explane everything, and you probably understand it better, Tuomas lyrics are genius. It is a haunting beautiful song. (In the text under the video says wacken, but this is Wembley ☺ ) thank you for this video. ☺

Nightwish is his child, his diary, and has been since 1996, the work of his life, nobody else touches the lyrics or music (almost never) on the band, so it's like super personal to him, and he already is a very emotional person. Around 2004 their first singer and childhood friend, Tarja Turunen, was starting to threaten that she'd leave the band, and given that she was such an iconic part of their sound that, at the time, it was thought she was irreplaceable, Tuomas saw how his band was about to be broken and himself left without a purpose, just at their commercial and critical peak. So in 2005, after months of deliberation, he dismissed her with an open letter after a concert (Recorded and known as "End of an Era") and, admittedly not without a reason, people turned on him saying he was a monster for having her fired and in that way, even her (they don't speak to each other even now). This song released in 2007 and it is about those times, the pre-concert deliberation of her dismissal, the concert itself, the way people raged at him and then the recomforting love of his mother and father, who told him everything was going to be all right. That's the short version.

Just to add to Ahasverus92 great summary... the band thought Tarja was far too concerned with commercial stuff, she was wanting to push her own career rather than the band, do solo projects. i think there was something about her refusing to do a tour and going to see her husband, who had become her agent... and she had already threatened to quit the band and go solo the year after she got the letter. Tuomas pushed her out before she jumped, but there were so many people who thought tarja was Nightwish and didnt understand that tuomas writes and composes everything, he got absolutely slaughtered by the media and a lot of fans... hell if you look at any discussion board today 12 years later it is still full of people saying "they were never the same after tarja left, i hate them now".

It's okay, honey. You just felt what Tuomas felt, after Tarja's leaving: sadness, anger, struggle, hopelessness. This is what he wanted to achieve. To show people, what was in his heart and soul at that time, because most of their fans blamed only him, even if this was the decision of the whole band.

Not after her leaving, after being SCOLDED by fans, media, friends and even Finish politicians. The media destroyed him, ripped him apart. He lost "friends" (the betrayel and spitting on his grave) all those people being crows feeding on his rotting corpse. This is way more than Tarja leaving. It is about the AFTERMATH.

When I first heard this song, i did not know any of the backstory, still I cried during the "Mother and Father" part. Being a mom of four, it just felt so raw and emotional, like seeing your own child been smitten by grief and trying to calm him down, like when you are calming down a teenager but still remembering how wulnerable he was as a small child. It just somehow came together at that final part, that, no matter what happens to you, you will have your family to trust upon. And It is even sadder to realise, that a lot of us doesn't have that refuge in the family, because we have none. I feel so lucky to have my family, who have been with me through thick and thin, but I still cry when I hear this song, even so many years later...

My dad died in 2006 and this song discribes my feelings perfectly. 2: The Greatest show on Earth (Live at Tampere) : This track just makes me feel grateful to be alive. This song put me in contact with a deep melancholy inside that I simply didn't realize I was harboring until this song put me in the mood where I could see it. That was a gift that helped me glimpse those oceans within that Tuomas is writing about. Standing on the shore to your inner oceans and finally understanding how much of you there is yet to explore... That is one deep and liberating message, which I feel that more people would be empowered by hearing. Thank you for this outstanding, open and heartfelt reaction.

This song takes some getting through, if you know the meaning behind it. Tuomas wrote this after the split with Tarja, and he has said in an interview he was so broken up over it that he had to write this song where he kills himself in the music so he didnt have to do it for real. If you find the lyrics somewhere you can see how much pain the guy was in. Its beautiful, sad, tormented and an absolute masterpiece in ten minutes of genius.

When Floor sings, she doesn't just tell a story. She makes you FEEL the story. The highs, the lows, the rage, the despair, the hopelessness, the salvation, the love. This song has a wide range of deep emotions and darkness and she projects all of it onto the listener. The listener feels it, and for 14 minutes lives the raw emotions. Toumas is a master class songwriter and this is an artistic masterpiece.

And in the correct order too haunting, sadness, anger and the relieving crying at the end of it all. You even grasped it all at the first listening, that's impressive! And a lot to take in in just one round of this song. You're so lovely

You pretty much hit the core of the song. It really is the Mother talking to him in the end of the song. Pia covered the story behind this song prettt well. This is absolutely the most powerful Nightwish song. I've heard it live several times and I hope to hear it again this Saturday when I'll be seeing them in Lahti, Finland. They are making a tour with their most essential songs from all of their carreer and this is one of them but I don't know if they have played this on the tour. I haven't watched the setlists lately but I saw some of the first ones that were not any surprising leaning to their recently released compilation album called Decades. That's gonna be a huge show. They will have another big concert in Helsinki (Finland) in December too.

Your reactions and instinct are 100% on point. As many have already mentioned; Tuomas (the guy on the keyboard and writer / composer for Nightwish) was in a DARK place when he wrote this song, so dark that many people truly feared for his life. This song was his anger, depression and suicidal intent all rolled into one massive ball of crazy awesome music.

Tuomas is a master in putting the exact right emotions in a song that he wants to portray. And Floor connects to her listeners and pumps emotions straight into your heart. It's the amazing talent they have. It's because they sincerely feel what they sing and play. It is not acting. Having said that I absolutely love your open emotions. Seeing you cry openly opens the gates over here as well. And we are in a huge company of people. No other song radiates the rollercoaster of emotions regarding the thoughts of suicide like this one. Happily for him and us all he lived through that period. At the end the band is checking on him if he is doing oke. They are not a band. They are a band of brothers ( and sister). So amazing that a combination of notes, rythm, melodie and sound can do this to your mind. Fantastic.

To be able to convey such emotion with simple music, even when you can't understand all of the words is just pure magic. Tuomas is a genius of epic proportions. As a father to a kid pretty close to you age on the spectrum, I gotta say, it's great to see you not only just let it all out but also to see you work through and try to explain what was going on with you emotionally. Your thoughts at the end are actually spot on. It's exactly what you're supposed to feel emotionally. On being "pissed off" yeah. What Tuomas was trying to get across was on part his anger at the world for how angry they were at him for letting Tarjia go. And at the end yes. That's exactly what he's trying to convey. He's said in interviews that the last part is almost exactly quoted from his mom, comforting him ; telling him it would all be OK. AWESOME reaction, brother. Great job letting us share what's going on in your head when you listen to this amazing band

I'm not an expert on Nightwish or anything, but I think part of the story was that when the writer, Tuomas, was dealing with the emotional fallout (and the incredibly negative reaction of the fans) from the band's breakup with Tarja Turunen, it eventually got so bad that Tuomas saw only two ways of dealing with it. Either he would end his own life, or he would write a song in which he dies. Thankfully he chose the latter. There's probably more to the story than that, but you can see the connections in the lyrics. He tells how despite how hard the decision was to make, he/they didn't have any support from their own community. But they just couldn't stop altogether, probably for business reasons or something, in the lines "I cannot cry 'cause the shoulder cries more. I cannot die, I, a whore for the cold world." And if that isn't direct enough, he full on name drops himself into the song in a cry for help. For forgiveness, or death. "Today, in the year of our Lord 2005, Tuomas was called from the cares of the world. He stopped crying at the end of each beautiful day. The music he wrote had too long been without silence. He was found naked and dead, With a smile in his face, a pen and 1000 pages of erased text. Save me." He implies that he already died in 2005, when the breakup with Tarja happened. I'm speculating a bit here, but it seems like the smile, and the 1000 pages of erased text suggests a feeling that he could die happy if he could take it all back. Undo everything that caused him so much pain.
