The Poet and The Pendulum probably has the heaviest breakdown in the middle, followed by The Greatest Show On Earth (their longest song at 24 minutes) which has an epic breakdown halfway through. Tribal from their 2020 album has a breakdown in in that I would almost describe as industrial metal, although I could be completely wrong. As a gay guy, it seems to be very common that gay guys like Nightwish. The only way that I'm different is that although I do love the ballads, I love the heaviest parts so much more. EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: many people seem to like Nightwish because the operatic vocals make it "not metal" enough to pass as not being a metalhead, because so many people still see some sort of stigma against the whole metal scene.

That works if you have a singer whose voice can blend in with a choir. Neither Floor's nor Tarja's voices are cut out to be one among many so Floor's voice doesn't really suit the composition. And this is what I find disappointing because, until now, Tuomas has always managed to write songs that were complementing the voice of the respecitve singer perfectly - Tarja's songs matched her operatic classical style, Annette's songs were more rocky, and Floor can just sing anything. But in the case of this particular song, it feels like Floor's vocals are subordinate to the story he is telling and although it might make perfect sense for the storyline, this simply doesn't work for a singer with Floor's talent, skill, and versatility - at least in my opinion.

@@nietzscheente1271 yes but generally old NW was basically regular band (with great musicians of course) and most of the songs was simple: verse chorus x2 bridge and chorus at the end. But old NW music is thankfully still available and we can listen to both NW bands 😉 I just wanted to clarify that this "issue" with the chorus was intended.

I'm glad Nic's trying to give it a proper listen. Nightwish is one of those bands that are bigger than life for many, me included. I'm personally not a huge fan of Nik's music taste, which comes down to heavier and heavier breakdowns, going for the shock value. Metal music is much more than that and Nightwish is a great example. Open your mind to new stuff, there are plenty of amazing bands out there that do other than djenty guitars, generic breakdowns etc.

At this point my musical taste is just so all over the place I can't even describe it anymore. I started out with Evanescence. My top 3 bands rn are Within Temptation (btw their latest 2 albums go kinda hard ngl), Nightwish and Arch Enemy. I def lean a lot in that whole symphonic/melodic direction but also really enjoy all kinds of different music, especially the heavy type. Relatively recently I got into Face Yourself (mostly through Lorna Shore) and there's also a lot of Spiritbox and Jinjer going on. Jinjer actually got me into the harsh vocals. I also recently discovered that I kinda enjoy rap and especially israeli hip hop. Def never saw that one coming lol. Point is you can enjoy completely different things at the same time and everyone who says different or tries to gatekeep is probably a miserable moron. Other point is, Nightwish is freakin awesome❤

Tuomas writes the music, and the band delivers it. If Floor is asked to belt it out, she belts it out. Here, she's been asked to be one of many instruments (the lyrics even specify "Floor Jansen - chorus" when Tuomas wants a choir.) We expect her to soar above the music at any moment, because that's what we're used to (and look forward to.) We'll get that on the album, I'm sure; meanwhile this is very good, and it gets better with every listening: just put away your expectations and let it soak in.

It's ridiculous to read the complaining about "Floor's voice is not front and center in the mix", while the collab EP "The Poetic Edda" of DISEMBODIED TYRANT / SYNESTIA gets praises here, there & everywhere, even if all they've done was sampling/covering almost the whole "Winter"-part of Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and built in several breakdowns with added growls/screams to call it "Symphonic Deathcore" and "The EP of 2024".......Tuomas and all the people that were involved in the recording-processes and producing those Nightwish albums have NOT deserved this ungrateful behaviour. That was not the sky it was the ocean. Down below some of the deep holes in the oceans, there are pockets of water that are heavier (super saturated with salt and stuff) what makes them heavier than the water above, so it creates a river or lake below the upper water. I am pretty sure that is what we see in this. Usually there is a chunk of clouded water (not very healthy to be going into) that sits just above the underwater rivers/lakes and we saw the diver descending into the cloudy section. If you had only listened to Nightwish with the Original singer, who was very heavy operatic, you may find you like even the older songs as sung by Floor who, is extremely well trained classical but, is very versatile in her range and styles. i think the volume of the vocals are perfect. they don't really need to be louder because it feels like this is done on purpose in regards to the theme of the whole song and how we are part of nature, of the grand symphony of life and why should one overpower the other in the symbolism. sure we got the tech to do that nowadays but realistically in an epic moment, epic scene or a storm or battle or something else like that, our weak voices get drowned out by the sounds and "music" of the world and the rest of the "instruments" of life. Things get blended together into this amalgamation of sounds that if you want to listen to the "lyrics" you have to try more. Or kinda like birds singing, the vocals are one group of birds and the rest are also doing their thing and they won't really "let you" hear the lyrics and vocals more, you gotta do that yourself.
