Listen to more of my thoughts on Nightmare Alley here! kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2dm1LBpkZaemJM.html
I like the on location format. You're probably the most creative and least lazy film critic on KZread.
As a freak. geek and wannabe con-man, this is the kino for me
The scenes of you just standing out in the rain with lights in the background is just gorgeous. Thank you for that touch.
I agree with your assessment of the Del Toro film. I also thought that it was more a remake of the original film than an opportunity to celebrate the book which was brilliant. I also did a video on Nightmare Alley, but my take on it was on how tarot was used to propel the plot. I am a professional tarot reader, so that was why my interest was more focused on that aspect. It's regrettable that Gresham wasn't more celebrated in his day and that Tyrone Power's performance wasn't either. His performance was chilling, it came close to the charismatic charm of a serial killer.
The only Nightmare Alley I'm familiar with is the one where one Isaac Manhuffy assailed me with homophobic slurs and empty beer bottles for being in the way of his "Wasted Hours" camera shot. Despite me explaining that it was my corner where I would raise money for various orphans everyday, he laughed maniacally and screeched "eff those 'neighbors'" before body-slamming me into the concrete. Don't give this man money people! He will use it to abuse the poor and needy.
Every video you upload is pure Kino. Merry Christmas!!!
The Hayes code was also about avoiding boycotts
Never heard of either films. Going to have to give the book a read.
Tried watching the new version and it seemed too busy, too “magical” as is del Toro’s wont. Let’s call the orignal Kansas, the remake Oz.
Dude love your channel
Not spoiling something? This isn’t the Kino Corner I know.
I loved this review, mang
Kinda unrelated but Nightmare Alley was almost certainly some kind of confessional / attempt at catharsis by Gresham, though it seems it was never a catharsis he was able to achieve. If you take a voyeuristic plunge into his life, N.A. was a play-by-play of events surrounding his relationship with his wife / affairs he had with a few different mistresses. What's really wacky is that, apparently, Gresham's intense alcoholism / otherwise abusive behavior drove away his wife (Joy Davidman) + sons, and they ended up living with C.S. Lewis of all people. Lewis would later marry Joy, adopt the sons, and would write multiple books dedicated to the family that Gresham drove into his life (Horse and his Boy was dedicated to the sons, Surprised by Joy was dedicated to Davidman).
11:20 nice
idk if I'm relieved or disappointed you didn't do brownface

10:55 As a Christian I would love to see that type of guy get roasted haha
Just saw Del Toro’s version and compared to the original film he really makes it a point that it’s bad to trick people into believing in the fantastic, Zena twlls some guy after the fact he had been a part of an act and that it was make believe. Stanton is shown to want to work counter to this and that’s his fatal flaw. It feels like modern-day moralizing to an audience brought in wanting seediness and danger. He gives the audience terrible violence and a morality play on a well-lit, well shot frame. No real reason to be two and a half hours plus. A kind of pointless movie to make.
The old thumbnail was better.

@@TheKinoCorner so does that mean I got the job?
They should take a page from JoJo and use the tarot cards as a basis for superpowers. It would make the movies not be a sucky 1/10
But what if being a geek is actually le good?

5:35 kinda boring roles!! Errol Flynn fans might wait for you outside dude cool it, don't spit on something to make your point easier, those were young actor's roles but he matured and needed to show it on screen, this film then those with Ford and Wilder were some of the best moments of his career but don't send Black swan The mark of Zorro Johnny Apollo and Blood&sand away please.
I'm sorry but with Spiderman in the theater inferior films like this are not worth anyone's time
