I think Lou is possibly the creepiest movie character I've ever seen in my life. Just look at those empty, soulless eyes. It's like gazing into a void that slowly sucks you in but you can't stop watching. Hell, I don't know what acting wizardry Jake Gyllenhaal did, but he hardly looks human in this role. Saw this on Netflix and I was really surprised. Starts off a bit slow but then it gets really good. Keeps u on the edge of your seat cause youre constantly wondering what he'll do next or how far he'll go. The climax left me speechless. This movie is definately disturbing and almost traumatic, but in a good way haha. After it finished I had to just sit in silence with my head down, hands clasped together and take a deep breath just to process it and decompress. Theres a lot to be learned from this film, about the good AND bad sides of ambition.

Steven Dowens but Arthur had sympathy. He was caring until he had enough. Louis is manipulative, and unsympathetic. He literally had no real emotion through the whole movie. All his emotions were fake and planned, he did everything that would satisfy him, he was extremely selfish. He basically killed his employee without actually killing him himself, he tricked him. He’s a psychopath just minus the killing. Arthur, is a sociopath, he has emotions.

I think that line "I would never ask you do to anything that I wouldn't do myself" sums up Jake's character perfectly. It lulls his partner into such a false sense of security of "Okay so this dude is fair he wont push" when we know that he will do literally anything to achieve the goals he sets. Completely summarises the complete sociopathy of Jake's character in retrospect

one of the best? that's an overstatement if i've ever heard one. his best works were the machinist, the prestige, american psycho and the fighter was pretty good. compare those to gyllenhaals best works and you'll see why it's an insult. also, please don't tell me the batman trilogy is what makes you think bale is one of the best actors alive.. he was terrible in that trilogy and was carried by a fantastic supporting cast and good script. tdk was all about joker and rises was all about bane. those two, along with the supporting cast, are what made those movies amazing.
@practiceyourart
9 жыл бұрын
Mike Nguyen It's not an overstatement since he's praised by most fans and critics alike other than some hipster wannabe youtuber who thinks having a very rare, different view of him makes his unique view anything worth more than the bs that it is. I don't see how anyone needed to carry him as he played Bruce Wayne far better than anyone else before sans that shitty voice when he was on his suit.
I saw this film on a whim and I don't regret it. At first it's kinda like "Whatsss going on here this is boring" but then it picks up and you realize how insane Lou really is. Its a fantastic movie.
this guy, patrick bateman and the guy from "no place for old men" have to be the most chilling psychopaths in cinema. all just have their emotionless, soulless and deeply uncanny eyes and unnatural dialogue and speech that really effectively convey their lack of humanity. truly amazing stuff.

This is definitely one of those movies that gets under your skin. Initially, my sister and I were on the fence about it because of how dark it was, and the depth and brazenness of the main character's sociopathic approach to life was friggin' outrageous. After a short while, though, we couldn't stop talking about it. Personally, I liked the movie a lot.

@GirishKumarBhat

The Philosopher yes I agree, Birdman did not have the impact on the audience like this one or the Whiplash. But what makes it in my top three list is the way they have shot this movie, made it look like the whole movie was shot in a single shot and it was on point with no errors at all. And they tried to show us the real life of an actor, what lies behind that fake smile of all the celebrities out there. Brings out the memory of Robin Williams, The way he made us laugh and he himself was suffering from depression, that darkness which was hiding behind that amazing smile and that humor. That and the way they had shot the movie made it one of my favorite. And yes The Grand Budapest was amazing, it's clearly in my top 10list.

This was the most accurate and realistic portrayal of a sociopath. He didn’t lose at the end because that’s how a lot of people get successful in real life and how the people around him were a part of making people like him thrive and even the system itself

I think one of Jake Gyllenhaals genius moves is that his character never blinks. He always has this weird stare, that you'd find in weird people, which perfectly fits this role.
Learned a lot from this movie. I think anyone could learn from this movie. Things Jake said in this film,WOW. You could take away a lot from this if you choose to. You must be blind if you say it's not worth watching.
There's so many movies in the world. THOUSANDS! And this is in my top 50
Jake Gyllenhaal:- 1) Gives the best character acting performance of 2014 by far and was rumored to rack up every single award of 2014. 2) Gets ranked at number 1 by almost every article on Google for best acting performances of 2014. 3) Gives arguably the most chilling and most unique performance of 21st century and one of the most accurate portrayals of a manipulative sociopath. 4) Every single emotion and expression is so well calculated and pitch perfectly delivered that you forget that Gyllenhaal is on screen. 5) Most importantly, backbone of one of the most timeless characters and movies of 21st century. Doesn't even get nominated at all and loses to a generic Oscar baity paraplegic performance that was limited from the start till the end in one of the most forgettable movies of 2010s. Logic of Academy Awards committee!!
JUST WATCHED IT . 100/10 . GETS MORE AND MORE INTENSE BY TIME. BEST OF ITS KIND. ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF JAKE GYLLENHAAL. ..

I am so glad I never saw this trailer. I literally watched the movie without knowing what it was about and I was so pleasantly surprised and at the same time, completely creeped out. Had I seen this before hand, I would've been completely prepared to know the main character is a sociopath.

This movie is so insanely good. Recommended it to someone and just had to watch the trailer. Incredible movie.
This movie is so intense that you would just seat there with this movie with fear and watch what he's doing and wondering what's his next move and how far will he go
movie was great! Jake Gyllenhaal continues to shine in every movie he features in
He might be a creep, but you gotta admit that he is one hell of a motivator, with the “hard worker” thing he says earlier in the movie.
One of the most inspirational movies I've ever seen. Makes me want to work hard and pursue my dreams.
An unforgettable film.
It’s truly surprising how the emotional intensity builds throughout this film. (Kinda sneaks up on you, really.) Gyllenhaal is an absolute monster in both the best and worst ways in this movie, in that the character is a totally barbaric sociopath, and that Jake had the brilliant acting chops to nail that character to a tee. Oscar-worthy performance, no question.
The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat for the hole movie 9.4-10 best movie ive seen in a while didnt want it to end!
