To be honest, judging by the description that Alan gave in American Nightmare, the town from Arizona was near the Threshold, not the Overlap. It doesn't seem like the Overlap existed as an idea back then, nor did idea of Alan projecting himself. "There are places where our world is worn thin and another reality brushes against ours. One such site is Cauldron Lake near Bright Falls, Washington, but there are others. That other reality is dark, vast and malleable, always in flux. In its depths dwell vast forces and alien energies." What makes things harder to understand with the new DLC is the fact, confirmed by Remedy, that Alan is changing parallel realities. We don't even know if the Waitress and Sibling's names are Rose and Jesse, let alone where their versions of reality end and Alan's fiction begins. Did he even have to rename the towns to Night Springs, if there could be realities in the cosmic ocean where Night Springs has always been real?

I'll touch base upon those details when we get to them. What's good about the DLC is even though these stories take place in different tiers of reality they still affect one another.

It's funny you should mention Alan ''placing'' the town in Arizona for the night. I'm currently reading the book Ascension, where a huge mountain appears in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and nobody knows why or what's happened. Mid-book spoilers ahead. But in their Ascent, the main character, Harold, describes the Mountain as a tesseract. It's a slice of a tesseract, the likes of which we would see should they exist physically. The piece that clips into our three dimensions, but our brains are incapable of seeing the whole picture. I feel like your description of Night Springs has something in common with this. Night Springs is a constantly changing and evolving place/thing, that reacts to us as humans, A potentially higher power that reacts to us tiny ants and changes form because of it.

And just like that, my understanding is shattered again and pieced back together

Some people have argued that. The Fiction being a story of Tom the Diver and Reality being Alan. Some have argued this is an attempt to create an overlap on the lake.

There’s no way that Bright Falls isn’t an overlap itself, if not just a part of the dark place. It’s literally a fictional town that doesn’t exist in our world and it’s the antithesis to Night Springs, which is too great a coincidence.

Its less the whole town but the lake specifically. Stories have been told about it for so long dating back to the native tribes that it is a spot that is ripe for creating overlaps in the first place.

Reality is what's presented to the consciousness and what the consciousness must attempt to deal with to the best if its capabilities. What's perceived, i.e. entered the scope of live experience, the recrusive self-referential structure, the psyche, is reality, as much as the objective, external, more concrete one, for even the latter must first enter experience as psychic images. The plot of Alan Wake, Control, and their exploration on the artistic creation process and altered worlds are somewhat touching upon this respect, the reality-science as well as the nature of human consciousness.

Is the "Night Springs" ending theme set to a peppier remix of the main game's Coffee World music? I can't tell if it's just me imagining that, if others have noticed/concluded that, or if it's been actually confirmed. (For that matter, I think whatever music was going on during The Waitress' first combat in the boat yard during "Number One Fan" might've also been? Which now makes me wonder if these are all variations on the NS theme from the original AW game's episodes and what Tim's always humming in the AW2 main game.)
