Night Sky Navigation #2 Finding North in the Southern Hemisphere

Welcome to the second episode of my miniseries on Night Sky Navigation. The first episode dealt with moon and star navigation in the Northern Hemisphere. This episode focuses on the Southern Hemisphere. Night-lapse photos for this video were taken with a GoPro HERO4. An iPhone 6+ was used for all other video.
GoPro HERO4 SETTINGS:
Mode: Night Lapse
Shutter: 30 Seconds
Interval: Continuous
Megapixels: 12 MP /Wide
Spot Meter: OFF
Protune: ON
White Balance: 3000K
Color: GoPro Color
ISO Limit: 800 (moon not illuminated; 400 moon illuminated).
Sharpness: Medium
Recently I had the opportunity to visit my twin brother, who lives at Tower Hill, Victoria, Australia. Pictures of the night sky were taken at that time. I was surprised to discover that the night sky appeared brighter in Australia, than it does in the America. At first I thought this was due to less light pollution in the rural area where my brother lives. But that is only part of the story. The South Pole faces the galactic center of the Milky Way, providing a view of billions of stars. The stars in the Milky Way are brilliant, and the dark holes between the stars are awesome. Since there is no star landmark in the sky like the North Star, I wanted to know how to practice night-star navigation. The answer was on Australia’s National Flag.

I learned something new today. I've seen the Southern Cross, but I wasn't aware of using the Pointer Stars with Crux to navigate. The Southern sky is more beautiful than the North. Those who haven't seen it don't know what they're missing. Thank you, Ken, for caring enough to bring us this kind of knowledge.

Thanx for a wonderful video. My year 5 and 6 class has just watched this and you have explained things perfectly. We originally came to get some ideas of how our native Australians look at the night sky, but we spent a bit of time on the navigation parts first. I shoot star trails in country New South Wales regularly and this navigation system is vital. many Thanx from all of us.

Wow! That was a great informational video. Perhaps it's ironic that I saw the Southern Hemisphere episode 1st. Living here, of course I knew about the Southern Cross, however, I wasn't aware of the pointer stars. I look forward to checking that out tonight (hope the sky is clear). We've just returned from a camping trip, one of my favourites things was looking up to the night sky, (which was crystal clear this time round). It's always fun to 'find' the Southern Cross. fyi - The brilliant full moon made it possible to walk to the amenities without using my headlamp. Thanks for sharing Cheers & atb

I remember when I was a kid The stars were much brighter in the States than they are today. I don't know... pollution? too many brights light from cities? I'll have to go look up you other video. Not getting notified of everything for some reason. According to Jimmy Buffett it's the Dolphin and the Jolly Mon that tells people where they are.

Is there a star or point in the southern sky that is the equivalent of the north star or does a time-lapse done in the SH rotate around a dark part of the sky? Is it just a coincidence that we have a north star that is exactly inline with the axis of the earth?

  • @KennethKramm

+KennethKramm I think it's more than fortune :) If you view the earth as flat like it really is, then these star movements make a lot more sense. Star trails like we see them are only possible on a flat non moving earth. I live south of the equator and can see the north star but can't find any center of rotation south of me. On a flat earth that scenario makes sense but on a globe it is non sensical as many have discovered.

Sir: when we were in Oz in the late 1990s, we had no trouble finding the Southern Cross once pointed out to us. Surprisingly, it was slanted. Once identified, it was very easy to spot in the night sky. With no disrespect, your video does not show the night sky there with the clarity I remember. We visited Oz again within 2 weeks of 9/11 and a few years later, New Zealand. Each time we were with NZ friends who had emigrated to Australia. (Much helpful to have them drive!) The other thing was that the moon in daytime was upside down: Yokum's Moon! Of course, it makes sense when you are standing on your heads!

What you say in the description about the night sky appearing brighter in Australia caught my attention. I don't know what your religious beliefs are, but did you know that the Bible at Job 9:9 describes the Southern constellations as "interior rooms (or "chambers") of the South." If you do have a faith in Scripture, i would appreciate your thoughts on why the Word of God describes the Southern constellations as being "inside" something when science teaches the opposite.

KennethKramm O.K., something for you to ponder then. I made a video about it. Another Scripture at Job 38:31 speaks of "cords," "ties" or "chains" of (apparently) Orion and the Pleides constellations. Science teaches that there is no connection between these stars.
