Nigeria vs Indonesia: Things we didn't know about each other's countries!

[CC for ID/EN subs!] DiveThru Ep 8 - Meet Titilola, my dearest flatmate in Germany for 3 years! I've waited so long to make a video discussing our cultures because everything was just so new and I knew almost nothing about Nigeria before I met Titi, and vice versa, she knew almost nothing about Indonesia before she met me.
So I think (and hope) a lot of you will find it interesting as well! One more video is coming soon where we specifically discuss about our local languages.
Thanks so much Titi for doing this with me despite being camera shy. ;) (but seriously...you're such a natural in front of the camera!!)

Folks, Indonesian here who happened to live in Abuja, Nigeria back in 2012. On the Nigerian Indomie part, confirmed that it is a very big thing there - literally everyone eats that. Instant noodles there are synonymously called Indomie, no matter what the brands are. They even have big Indomie factories, and I visited one that was close to Lagos. To clarify what Titi was saying, basically the Indomie noodles are boiled without that much of water, unlike the amount of water that is being used to cook soupy Indomie noodles here in Indonesia. While it is being boiled, you put the ingredient packs into the pot and then wait for a couple of minutes where the soup's got reduced and immersed into the noodles, leaving a little amount of water that is just right to be served (to give you an idea, it's like 'mie nyemek' or 'mie tumis aceh' where you are left with little thick soup). They've got various versions actually, i.e. original, pepper, onion, and others, where my favorite one is the onion. They even sold a hungry size version, which is basically three times the size of a normal Indomie pack (not sure if that's still available now) which is actually very tasty. There aren't any fried Indomie noodle version being sold locally in Nigeria like the ones we have here. And to add one more thing, the ingredient packs actually tastes very very salty from an Indonesian perspective, and my mom would usually make the noodles soupy so as to balance the overall taste. But the longer in time I lived there, I actually like the salty version and when I got back to Indonesia, I felt that the Indonesian version is not that flavorful enough lol. Great content Genesia and Titi! Thanks for bringing back my memories of living there.

As a German teacher (physics and astronomy...) with English as second language... I would like to know how you see us, the funny Germans and their strange habits. Do you feel safe and well here? (I very much hope you do!!) As a cosmopolitan by heart and soul I would wish that you like it here... at least a little. Let my wish you a pleasant stay here and that you go on telling us interesting things about you, your studies, your life in general. ( Some time ago I used to follow an American exchange student (here in KZread)... unfortunately she quit after three months and returned home... she simply could not stand this country anymore! I would be so happy if you would see this through!!! Stable electricity supply happens in Indonesia just in last 10 years. It is really a good point. But if you live before say 2010 or so we often times had blackouts. The number I cannot tell exactly but it would be around few times a month. Now, even in smaller cities in Java, people pretty much enjoy the stable current supply. I cannot say outside Java as I spend most of my time last 3 years in Java. Hope this situation lasts long and even gets better especially outside Java.

I lived in Nigeria for about 2 years back in the day. I also have Indonesian mother, and had previously lived in Indonesia as well. But here's one thing that surprised me: Indonesian people always claimed that they love Indomie, but nothing compared to Nigerian. The Nigerian are addicted to Indomie. In Indonesia people only eat it at least once a week, or when they don't have any other food at home, but in Nigeria even if you have money your mouth will start itching if you don't eat indomie once every 2-3 days. Also, most of them think that Indomie was a Nigerian product (it has a factory there tbh), and were surprised when they found out what the Indo in Indomie actually means.

Indonesian believe that instant spices/seasoning are not good. That's why maybe most Indonesians don't eat Indomie every single day. And in here there are lots of cheap food stalls like Rumah Makan Padang or Warteg. So instead of eating instant food like indomie, it's better to eat rice with side dishes.

Well, as Indonesian myself, we believe that anything instant is not good if you consume it needlessly. Do I love indomie? Hell yeah I do. I taste every variant Indomie ever put out. Even in my broke college student days, I don't eat indomie everyday. I usually part it 2 or 3 times a week when I was tight on money, the rest of the time I tried to cook cheap food with plenty of rice to keep myself full.

My wife's mum is 92 meanwhile and really had a reasonable good life, with all three children near here... and still the "German perspective" is in some aspects irrational... We use to pretend that Life was unlimited! She herself says (now really serious) ... let me go... I ' ve had enough, life becomes more and more unbearable... stuff like that ... and her family does NOT accept that. The say: " Do not say this!" etc. Here the African position is much more honest and realistic! ...and again Thank you!

Correction about death. For Batak people, in funerals you have to have music and singers to entertain the family who experience the loss. Some Christians would allow secular songs, some only allows church songs. And the amount of ceremonial sutff you're gonna do is depending on whether the person who died is married or not, how many children they have and if the person's children is all married or not. It's all different. It also determines the type of ulos (traditional Bataknese clothing) their family have to wear during the funeral.

Watching the Indomie part reminds me how Jamaicans and Trinidadians relate to cooking rice 😂. Jamaicans put in the exact amount of water and they don't usually fluff the rice. Trinnies add a lot of water, then pour the water off in a colander, usually resulting in rice that appears to be fluffed in the end😅 First time I saw a Trinidadian cook rice I nearly lost my mind😂

The Batak people in Indonesia sometime celebrate death like the Nigerian does. Not all deaths apparently. It's called 'Saur Matua'. Usually for celebrating the death of very old people. It's generally assumed that these people have lived a perfect live, especially when they have family, economically stable, all their children are well educated and married, have grandchildren and none of their descendants died before them. Nothing more could be added to that kind of life. Thus, it's a death to be celebrated, not mourned. They have to send their parents in grandiose. Depending on how big and 'rich' their children, celebration range from 3 days to one week, with music and dancing. Also a major threat of extinction for pigs in that area. 😅

    1. Population I'm check population in my village, kecamatan (idk the english) and city. And I'm shocked. Sooo crowded. 2. 3. Festivities We also celebrate everything. Siklus hidup: - hamil 3 bulan - hamil 7 bulan - melahirkan - selapan - mudun lemah - ulang tahun (tiap tahun), wetonan (tiap weton) - sunat/khitan - wisuda - Tamat baca Alquran (apa lupa namanya) - Lamaran - menikah (prosesnya sebelum dan sesudah nikah ada banyak paling akhir itu bancaan selapan) - kematian (prosesi pemakaman, 3 hari, 7 hari, 40 hari, 100 hari, 1000 hari setelah kematian), berbeda sesuai suku, acara kematian suku bali berbeda dengan suku yang ada di Sulawesi, Sumatera, Papua dll. - Bersih desa (masing-masing daerah berbeda nama dan tata caranya) - Pesta rakyat setelah panen - Acara keagamaan - Acara kenegaraan kayak hari kartini, hari kemerdekaan, dll - bangun rumah - masuk rumah baru - pindah rumah - beli mobil baru, sepeda motor baru - tahun baru (masehi, jawa, Islam, chinese etc) Etc Esensi perayaan yang kita lakukan adalah rasa syukur dan kebersamaan. 4. 5. 7. Indomie Itu teknik mie nyemek 😂 24:44 you have to eat indomie RAW WITHOUT COOK IT 😂
